Looking at the song ‘Marakatha Manimaya’, the composer Oothakaaddu Venkata Subbayyar, the choreographer the Kuchipudi maestro Sri Vempati Chinna Satyam and the actual composer of Tarangam - Narayana Teertha- through his work ‘Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini’ should be perplexed in the Brighter World as under: Narayana Teertha wondering ‘when did I compose this Tarangam’. Oothakaaddu Venkata Subbayyar questioning ‘why I am not credited for this composition as kruthi while it is mentioned as Tarangam - the work of Narayana Teertha’. Finally, the Kuchipudi legend Vempati Chinna Satyam, with hands on his head, ‘why did I experiment brass plate for a Non Tarangam composition like ‘Marakatha Manimaya’ , now the artists are using brass plate for even thillanas and where ever they want to and citing my experiment’. On a more serious note, ‘Marakatha Manimaya’ is a kruthi written by Oothukaaddu Venkata Subbayyar, whereas what is called as a Tarangam is the work ‘Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini’ by Narayana Teertha. In the Taranagam, Narayana Teertha’s compositions cover the entire life story of Sri Krishna from birth to Rukmini Kalayanam, One of the unique and important aspects of Kuchipudi art form is performing on a brass plate. The Kuchipudi Legend Sri Vempati Chinna Satyam, being a maestro of the Kuchipudi art form, sensing the richness of the lyrics of the song ‘Marakatha Manimaya’ been similar to that of Narayana Teertha’s Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini, experimented to present the krithi in Tarangam format and added jathis in plate to show the versatility of the art form. Oothakaaddu’s other compositions like Brindavana Nilaye, Swagatham Krishna, Sri Vighna Rajam Bhaje, etc which are performed as Kuchipudi choreographies are not performed in brass plate and is shown as kruthis only. It is only the effort of the maestro to showcase the brass plate for Marakatha Manimaya song as explained above. Please modify accordingly since many juniors will follow your good selves.
