Bireli Lagrene was fun, friendly and brilliant when we played together back in November 2019.
Most of all, he was an inspiration, sending out musical ideas that I’ve been enjoying playing with and I’m very happy to share some of them with you, so you can share the fun and be inspired too.

In this lesson you’ll learn some very cool chord shapes that you can use over many jazz or gypsy jazz tunes.
Let’s start by learning some new chord shapes (starting at 1:06).
Play the chords one after another. Practice along with me on the video. It’s so nice that you can go back and replay it until you get it down pat!
Chord Solo and Intro (starts as 6:08)
The first thing you can try out is an exercise you can use for free improvisation or as an intro. After each chord, add a phrase using some notes from the chord, maybe an arpeggio, a triad or a lick you know. Use your imagination. Experiment with the skills you’ve learned. Get inspired by the examples I play on the video, such as playing the harmonic minor scale or the Fdim7 arpeggio for E7b9. See what you can get out of this chord progression
Made in France (starting at 07:50)
Next you can see how these chords are applied to the A part of Bireli Lagrene’s beautiful composition, Made in France.
Try to add Bireli Lagrene’s cool rhythm pattern, which I show you in the video lesson at 08:05.
After you’ve practiced it a lot, you’ll feel freer and be able to add more embellishments.
Nuages (starting at 10:20)
Bireli Lagrene also uses these chords in the A part of the chord progression of Django Reinhardt’s well-loved composition and gypsy jazz standard, Nuages. If you don’t already know this song, learn it first, so that you can get the most out of this part of the lesson. Then, see how you can play Bireli’s chords as shown under each line:
I hope my demonstration of Nuages inspires your creativity. I’d love to hear what you do with it and feel free to leave me your comments below, I love hearing your comments and I will read them and answer each one of you.
Keep swingin’!

You are so welcome, Sergio!
this is gold!.. you say Bireli is an inspiration, and indeed he is. However, you are an inspiration also , Yaakov!
Thanks, Mungo! That's really heartwarming. It was really fun having Bireli join me (virtually) at a recent bootcamp I held. Let's all keep being inspired!
Très jolis accords, merci beaucoup! Toujours très instructif de vous suivre, d'écouter vos conseils pour l'improvisation et d'admirer votre jeu de guitare! Super!
merci beaucoup!
Great lesson!!! Thank you!! 👏👏👏👏
My pleasure!
Fantastic lesson!!! Super easy to follow and understand ...not so easy to do. I will need to practice!! Thanks from Texas
That's how music is for me... Simple to understand, hard to do and perform. Cheers!
beautiful playing... thanks a lot
My pleasure
Great video ! Can you do another video showing more Bireli substitutions ? I just saw him perform this week with Martin Taylor. Bireli was using so many beautiful substitutions I recognize most but many of his unique harmonic sound I didn’t recognize right away. Merci
If I get an opportunity. This was inspired by performing with him in person!
Magnifique ! Merci beaucoup
Avec Plaisir!
Very nice.
I personally used all of these voicings but the first one, in 2nd and 7th position, as Cmaj chords. Which would make sense of course with the progression and all from a canonical jazz standard point of view.
Anyways, just crapping around, good stuff.
Glad it caught your interest!
Thank you. I am preparing this piece for a recital. This will help make a cool intro.
Wonderful!
Superb lesson. Your explanation make it look easy. Great teacher.
I always loved Bireli Lagrene guitar style and now i love your guitar playing too. Regards from Mozambique
Thanks. My best wishes to you!

Thank you cool video... and congratulations you played a series of gigs with Bireli Lagrène ??? amazing man... please keep decoding- I am always trying to figure out what he’s doing. I did manage to learn Incertitude, after a year of slowing it down, but got a glimpse there of how he’s approaching the neck. thank you so much!!!

If anyone want to help me lets contact me on Fb or mail me..
Try following the lessons on my blog one at a time.
nice Yaakov!
Thanks my friend!
i hope the b part
Maybe someday!
Hi! Thanks for the lesson. I am going to practice this chords. I have a question, what's the scale that you play in 13:50?
Thanks.
It's a simple B minor pentatonic scale. When you play it over Em you get a nice sound of 7,9,11. Nice you've noticed!
Great lesson. By the way, what brand is your beautiful guitar? It sounds amazing!
Thanks! I'm playing a vintage Favino on this recording.
How do you like the Carlos CS sensor? Good? Interesting placement
It's the only placement that doesn't feedback on this particular guitar.
Sometimes it gives too much high frequencies that you have to cut. It's not perfect but it's pretty good.
@@GypsyAndJazz I recently bought one and am happy with it. I have the treble and mids on 0 and just push the bass a little. I haven't had any feedback issues and can push the volume on my Roland AC 40 all the way (guitar channel not mic). It took me ages to find the sweet spot on my guitar. I attached mine with the 3M tape provided but didn't push it down too hard as I noticed the sound became more 'nasally'. Jokko manouche pickups are supposed to be very natural sounding and quite cheap
Very clear and useful. However it is kind of difficult to place the chords quickly and get a nice sound. Thank you. Toda
Music is not easy to perform my friend. But it's easy to understand and enjoyable to practice. So take your time and have fun!
do you live in france ? cheers !!:)
I live in Israel :)
love your style ! and God bless Israel ! :)
Ich hab zu kleine Hände kann diese Akkorde leider nicht Greifen
You don't have to play these chords. Find the chords that you can reach and work on making them sound great!
