ive... never liked this take personally, to me it's always felt like a little bit of an overreaction? like i can get where some of the criticism comes from but at thr same time i feel like said criticism is taken in the wrong direction in a way
i always loved amy as a character, so im never going to be one to say that she wasnt a very well developed character with her own personality and journey, but im also never going to say that this writing wasnt hit or miss since the beginning and that she didnt have a lot of flaws
sonic adventure of course was absolutely peak with her writing i think that goes without explaining, but if im being honest im not sure if i can say that kind of writing has happened since, maybe in sonic x or sonic boom but those obviously dont count
i dont at all think that her infactuation with sonic mirrored any real life abusive relationships, and if im being honest i feel like people saying that as an argument is a little bit misleading because as far as i remember not near as many people actually thought that as it sounds when people talk about it, it was like one article i remember that even at the time sonic fans were criticizing, so i really never think that was even a factor in anything amy has ever done
if im being honest my issue isnt so much that amys obsession represents any negative relationships in our world, but more that its just... kind of annoying if im being honest? not the idea in general but i think its been pushed way more than people think, like since sonic adventure there are very few times amy has ever done anything for herself rather than sonic, besides heroes but she also did definitely go mostly because sonic was on the newspaper
like i love amy and how much she tries but it does get a little tiring when every game shes in most of her dialogue is about marrying sonic and nothing else, or when she does do something badass, its just so she can get sonic to marry her. but even besides that, i think this character progression is very natural for her, in part because of how obsessed she used to be
i think its a very good arc of maturity, and i really dont think her love for sonic has dwindled as much as it may seem, in older sonic games its obvious that she has a lot of her own talent and personality that helps her stand as equal to sonic, but i really dont know if she quite realizes that? i think its potentially fair to suggest that meeting sonic kind of helped her learn to be more herself and take these risks for ones she loves, but its still mostly all for sonic i think
i think knowing sonic has helped her learn slowly how to be her own powerful person WITH sonic rather than FOR sonic, being less dependent in that way
people dont hold an obsessive facination with people forever, they eventually grow and learn to be more mature so they can still be their own person without their love and thats a completely normal thing imo, amy can challenge sonic on things like when he tries to steer her away from the koco because shes developed her own view of whats right and holds strong in it, not that she didnt before but this interaction really shows it and how shes willing to put her love of the world and helping others over other things, no doubt thanks to sonic
and this is definitely more personal and subjective but i think it should be said how much this arc speaks to me as an aroace person, spending years chasing love because you DO want that, but not quite realizing that its not the romance you want, just a facination for someone who cares about you and inspires you to be better in a completely platonic way, and it helps you grow to be a better person than you frankly mightve if you kept chasing relationships all your life
but it should also be mentioned that amy never stopped loving sonic, she still shows her interest, just in different ways. i remember in this whole video jeb mentions how it seems strange that amy doesnt comment on her and sonic when facing a love that trancends time right in front of her, and this was something a little lost in the english translation, because the japanese iirc says exactly what ive been saying, amy wanting to mature and show that she can be a better person for sonic without it being so forced and obsessive
i.. also feel its worth mentioning that i hate this video, im not a fan of jebtube, i think this is the worst thing that has graced sonic discourse since ign said "sonic was never good", i dont like any of his points, i think he misses everything the game is supposed to be and he openly admits a lot of it is nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking
yet still though, i wrote a comment similar to this on the video when it came out, because he said to share why we liked this "new" amy rose, so i did, though i deleted it because it wasnt well written and i didnt feel like getting into anything over this
but i think its worth sharing, not to convince you youre stupid and wrong but just so you could potentially see the value in this direction, amy has only had one game like this, shes not fully fleshed out but the direction and effort at progress is there, and i think criticisms now are valid, but i want to see where this amy goes because i see good potential for this character i love
apologies for this rambley rant, do ask questions if i said something stupid or explained things poorly, i just dont think anyone has ever said quite how i felt about this before and im going to be really honest im sick of this video being spread around like the new testament of the gospel
I disagree with you he isn't overacting at all he just saying that modern amy sucks which i agree with also it's literally his opinion also plus he is literally expressing himself how he feels about the game you don't tell him what he should say and do I think you should keep this to yourself

This video is more relevant than ever. The way sega goes about “fixing” Amy’s character is pretending her dynamic with sonic never existed and it’s so dumb.
Probably a hot take but I honestly love the way Amy is used in 06. Her interactions with Silver and Else are really cute, and I never saw "I would choose Sonic" as her saying she'd still love Sonic even if he was an evil villian. I always just read it as her always having faith in him and knowing he'd never willingly hurt people.

Amy is just depressed in this game along with the other characters. All that stuff about seeing the world and living life was said by all 3 characters not just her. It's something someone who wants a second shot of life says. Whether they actually live that way after the truamatic event is up to them
To be fair, Knuckles immediately starts butting heads with Sonic as soon as he speaks to him. Amy showing a more moderate personality than Knuckles _does_ feel like an overcorrection
@Miju001 tails litterally tells sonic that he feels like he gets in his way and wants to be his own person..thats more out of character than amy simply not drooling over Sonic any more. If anything Tails was the most shocking of the 3

And I feel similarly with the other characters. I think it’s funny that when I interviewed Ian Flynn on The Hedgehog Zone podcast, and brought up the fans wanting him to write for a video game story, this was a few months before Frontiers was revealed let alone hi’ writing was revealed, and he said that fans don’t realize he would not be incomplete control and would just be fulfilling the tasks that Sega asked of him. I don’t know if that’s his way of shifting the blame off of himself, but he said this after having already written the game, but before we found out about it. So I remember those words after playing the game. Because I was disappointed in the story. And I was disappointed in the fan base for going crazy for the story simply because it addressed all the things fans wanted, regardless of how on the nose it was. it made it seem like they didn’t have to actually care about writing the story that well. They just had to touch on the trigger issues. Amy is even worse because she’s a girl. Which means she falls victim to the “woke” controversy that divides people. It’s especially worse because she was already a good character.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it .

She was never just that, especially from Adventure.

When i'm watching a show, i don't worry over something like "Are these characters still gonna be the same after 2 seasons"
But, in Sonic this is different, every single game feels like an alternative universe. Every single character is different what they're used to be now.
