A lot of folks wonder why you'd ever paint a handmade wooden Windsor chair, and the answer is simple: because we use 3 different kinds of wood to build them and because that's how it was traditionally done! Red over black milk paint wears well and gives a classic look. Applying Milk Paint is fairly straightforward, but very labor-intensive. Your first coat raises the grain, your second coat seals, your 3-5th coat adds dimension, adding oil makes the colors pop. BUT, each coat takes 45 mins, with work between. What if we could make it FIVE minutes per coat?

My process is the same as the one you describe and having done six Windsor chairs, two three-person farmhouse benches and a huge farmhouse sink cabinet repurposed as a buffet (all in that traditional black over red), I can attest that it is time-consuming!

    Cool technique!
To spray... or not to spray?
With all the negative space between the chair legs and back...
Brushing would reduce the waist (in paint) quite a bit. Spraying reduces the time (painting), the labor involved, and producing consistent coverage is less stressful.

Actually the difference is pretty negligible- between no loss into the brush and none drying out on the sides of the canister, I think we only went through about a quart of paint total with five coats on 8 chairs. But… don’t ever trust me too much with math or measurement 🤓

Love your videos, but I want to point out you need a respirator on when spraying milk paint. It is NOT safe. The manufacturer you used lists calcium hydroxide (lime) as an ingredient in their milk paint. Inhaling lime dust may lead to irritation of breathing passages, coughing and sneezing. Also depending on calcium hydroxide levels and length of exposure you can get calcium hydroxide poisoning which can lead to death. Please wear a respirator when spraying milk paint products.

If you look closely, you'll see we donned masks soon after starting, then decided to move the whole process outside, because even though it's non-toxic, it's always better to be safe than sorry ;)

@@AnneofAllTrades Yeah, I wasn't trying to nitpick, but just point out the hazard. Some wood finishes are promoted for being food safe, but often this is only after the finish has fully cured - it doesn't mean you can consume copious quantities by ingestion or inhalation without having issues. Love your woodworking and gardening content, it is very appreciated. You are amazing...

Non toxic still may be too bad for breathing in...

Nice idea. Side note: non-toxic does not mean its ok to atomize it and put it in your lungs.

Yo even non toxic stuff can be harmful when aerosolized and inhaled. Be careful!

I absolutely will! I talked with RMP though, and they said there wasn't any danger in what we were doing. But moving outside was a wise choice regardless haha

@@AnneofAllTrades i appreciate the response but the company has a vested interest in it "being OK". Without clear evidence that the aerosolized particles do not affect your lungs I wouldn't take that as much proof. In fact you have direct physical evidence (it being difficult to breathe) of the opposite. Non toxic it may be, but your lungs are not your stomach.
