There are a lot of amazing and very talented dancers who do these variations of the sugarplum fairy and her cavalier. But there’s something about this couple. They dance together seamlessly. And this woman… Who is she? I’ve never seen her before, but she is impeccable. The main individual dance of the sugarplum fairy is no joke. It’s a very difficult variation. These steps are fast and furious, and she performs them in a way that is both graceful, and yet you can see each individual movement , clear as a crack of a whip. No blurring of the lines. It’s easy for ballerina to “cheat“ a little bit between movements, which makes them look like they all blur together. Hers are very precise. I love the way she uses “stops” and “pauses” as punctuation points just as much as she uses movement. They both do. I love the nutcracker but watching this particular one- I cried and cried. (I also couldn’t help but notice the incredible Orchestra!) Thank you for posting. ❤
@Laura Streeter I feel like we were watching a different video. I thought that Baca's partnering with Misty was absolutely beautiful and her technique and alignment seemed impeccable to me. Copeland's movements are very expressive and fluid, and I love the way she connects with her music and her partners. It's too bad the comments were turned off on her video. Nevertheless it's interesting to watch Baca's style of partnering with these two amazing dancers. Both stunning to watch.
@@francescalittle I feel like you and I watched two different videos. O.o Technique aside, there was *no* chemistry between Copeland and Baca. Like... none. It was awkward to watch. He had more connection with Gillian in the first 30 seconds than with Misty the entire dance. I don't want to get into a debate about technique or choreography, and Misty may have more chemistry with other partners (I mean I haven't watched *all* of her stuff on YT) but not doing this pas with this partner.
What? 4:10 No boosting her up like she's mounting a horse? That was disgraceful, her "dancing". He's a tremendous dancer, and I love the chemistry between Murphy and him.
I was just watching Copeland’s variation with the same man, a year earlier.....what’s with the radically different choreography?? Right at the beginning, Copeland and Baca do an extremely awkward walk towards each other, taking about 3 8-counts, and then for some reason he kneels down and she-even more awkwardly-pretends to lift him up by his shoulders. During this version, with Murphy, she comes onstage with Baca and does the strenuous choreography I’m used to seeing. Then, later on, Baca actually has to dead-lift Copeland above his head, from the floor! I’ve _NEVER_ seen that move, in decades of watching ballet! Murphy simply runs, jumps, and she’s up there! I haven’t been much into American ballet lately, I guess bc the Russian, French, Danish, and English ballet companies have had my attention, so I dk what’s up with Copeland, but she doesn’t even look like a professional dancer, let alone a principal, and the other ABT dancers seem to be on par with Europe and Russia. What have I missed, what’s going on here??
I feel the choreography has been changed because of Misty's dodgy abilities. Agree with your comments. Also the corps de ballet were a bit iffy too. I have never seen this company perform live but not impressed by this recording.
@@clairecopple4369 I believe this is Ratmansky,s choreography that Copeland performed , an newer ABT version, which is different from the more traditional version that Murphy did. You can also see Boylston do a similar version during a filming in 2020, during Lockdown. Stunning choreo, but different and much more difficult in some ways.
JANICE NICHOLLS I don‘t hate her at all. But I love ballet 🩰 and when I see a ballet I sort of have expectations. I love how easy and effortless it looks when the dancer is good. And I just don‘t have this impression with Misty, it makes me cringe to see her turns (not talking about the fouettés! Even simple piqué-manege sections), balances, lifts. We are all human and I know anyone can make mistakes and look awful on stage on a bad day. But Misty has chosen this profession, and so she has to live with it that people compare her to the average principal standard. That has nothing to do with hate.
How great to see an excellent ballerina with a real feminine dancer body with a bit of flesh on the bones. Not the usual typical skeleton of ballerinas we see most of he time see... don't mean to criticise, judge or offend... Just saying....
Loved both ballerinas performances of this PDD but I think Misty's just edged it for me, although I feel that the chemistry with Baca is better in this one. I suppose it should be borne in mind that chemistry is not something that can necessarily be repeated from one performance to another. It's vulnerable to all sorts of factors such as injury, fatigue or the dancer/s just generally having an off day so it's a difficult thing to judge just from one video of each performance. Both videos were great!
@@kathymyers7279 as a dancer, I say it is rather annoying and distracting when they clap for no reason. someone would do a plie and the audience would go crazy
Was Sterling fired from ABT or did he go to Pennsylvania Ballet to be a principal because he could never be a principal at ABT he doesn't have the footwork the cleanliness and the pristine quality that an American Ballet Theater male dancer must have
There is so much stupidity of hatred and jealousy in your comment that it is obvious that you are a failed dancer and bitter envious of the success of other SB is a very great dancer and you are nothing
I feel bad for the guys in pas de Deux because all they're doing is standing there and lifting the girl (unless they have solos) while the ballerinas are taking over the stage and the audience is paying attention to only them lmao!
Is it because she has so many errors and the truth hurts...she should of gone to Pennsylvania ballet with sterling she does not have the goods to be in abt

Brava! So beautiful! Gillian keeps amazing me everytime; she's a major prima ballerina. Thank you for posting this
never see such beautiful pas de chats as Gillian's--this is an elegant, wonderful performance. Just wish the assemble had been grander.
Right?? What was that about?? Do you know where they were performing?
Gillian is just so strong and breathtaking to watch. For some reason the Sugar Plum Pas always chokes me up. I get so lost in the beauty☆
Whether it is with Misty or Gillian, Sterling delivers. His lifts are effortless. Masculinity and grace.
Sterling is also so great to see you growing and improving as a dancer. You are already fantastic!
Gillian Murphy is always stunning. Sterling was incredible in his solo and the pas de deux work.
Sterling, the aura of maturity you convey in your Cavalier, the grace and confident technique ... wonderful!!🌟
Gillian Murphy is excellent in technique and in stage presence; one of the best ballerinas around.
Ms Murphy is always perfection, no matter what the role. Mr Baca is handsome and very polished.
Interesting how Misty Copeland video of this same dance the comments are turned off... the reason is clear.

Bravo bravo bravo. GM is a true ballet goddess. Beautiful.
An attractive gracefully coordinated duo. The ballerina an icon of femininity and the male a Greek God.
Why are the comments turned off for mistys version
Sterling does an amazing job. His lifts are seamlessly with ease. Mindful of his partner, strong jumps, perfect timing. Inspiring.
woow! amazing performance, good dancers
Gillian Murphy was sublime.
They are absolutely pleased with each other. Respect.
Baca projects an superb command of technical finesse, acting chops, assurance and chutzpah, culminating in a blazing display of bravura.
BRAVO .Que manera tan bella ,elegante y majestuosa de bailar QUE BELLEZA .Mil gracias
We go to ABT now to see what Gillian is performing... she is only one who dances like a Russian... Praise Ideed !!!

Gillian Murphy, truly the "prima" of "prima ballerinas." Check her (performance) out in Tschaikovsky's Swan Lake.
I saw the whole thing... there are no words to describe it.
genial ballerina.
Gillian is sublime
I do prefer this one to Copeland's...
I was about to comment the same
No comparison!

Ratmansky's choreo, I believe.
Who choreographed this version or what historical version was this one modeled after? I think it’s my favorite, especially the ending.
I believe Alexis Ratmansky did this choreography, but you can google to make sure.
Great performance well done
Why on earth the hate on Misty Copeland? She is a wonderful, powerful dancer, different for sure, but non the less magnificent.

why all the clapping every five seconds? Its not a soccer match!
Because it's the most boring Pas de Deux ever put on stage. They try to keep awake.
Why not! They LIKE AND APRECIATE AND ENJOY WHAT THEY SEE. STUFF YOUR PRETENTION.

He's not at her level. I don't like his arms, he must take care of them and his faces during the dance. Too young! Learn and practice.
I like the way he mirrors her movements precisely with his arms, very polished performance.
He is acting as a fairy tale prince in a ballet for children. Not to demonstrate technique for a bored adult audience.
Omg, this looks so cheap and unprofessional.
They are on a very small stage; that seems to be the problem.
omg this is so bad:(
He looks like he has just walked in from the street and wants to get home.
She way he walks like he doesn’t care
...not according to her partners
she's very heavy for ballerina
Marina williams wow thats rude
And yet not an ounce of her is anything but solid muscle...most of us can only dream of that kind of physical perfection.
She seemed like a perfect size to me. Why would you want her to be any skinnier?
Yet she looks incredibly airy and graceful wtf....
