Great interview. 👍🏻 We never visited Aveiro and would consider it as a ‘second tier’ or ‘maybe’ city in PT if we had more time during our visite. Videos by Kalie & Josh and this video are perfect for us to better understand what Aveiro has to offer. 🙏🏻
Thank you, Maurice! We appreciate that message. Yes, Aveiro is considered second tier but it definitely it’s a certain profile of person! We like Aveiro. - Josh & Kalie
I studied in Aveiro. It is a very nice city. He made a good choice. Espinho is very close, and it has nice beaches and casinos . By the way, the Universidade De Aveiro has Portugues for foreigners.
Great interview. We have a lot of Portuguese Canadians here (mostly Toronto & Montreal) and in Ottawa. I knew as soon as Ed had spoken a few words he had to be from the Toronto area. Got to love the Canadian inflections. I do love to hear how people feel after moving to Portugal. I had to laugh when he mentioned winter... People go to Toronto to get away from our much harsher winters in Ottawa. So much of our food is not 'fresh', especially in the winter months... and with roads being as bad as they are in the winter, it make sense to shop once or twice a month as opposed to daily... but shopping every couple of days for fresh food is a joy and a privilege!
Thank you, Jen. I (Josh) also guessed he was from Toronto because of the accent. :-) We've got several friend from there and I'm fascinated with accents. Thanks for your commentary here. - Josh & Kalie
As always, Kalie's questions in interviews are right on the spot without redundancy, and Ed's answer is clear and streight. Thank you guys, great interview!
Love Aveiro: phenomenal beaches, amazing seafood, great climate, super nice people! This was a great perspective of someone who lives there. Thanks for the video!
What a great video with a lovely gentleman. I appreciate this honest assessment and glimpse into why Aveiro might not be the right fit for a single retiree such as myself looking for a more cosmopolitan city vibe.
Porto is only 70Km north of Aveiro. You take less than an 1 hour by car, or you have multiple very accessible public transportation from both city centers, 3 kinds of trains, or by bus. 1 train costs like 6€, bus can maybe be even cheaper
@@RuiCBGLima I will definitely add Aveiro to my itinerary, especially as I plan to spend an entire month in Portugal while pin pointing my needs and investigating best options. Obrigado.
Really well done. I was up there last week. I’d describe Aveiro as ‘up and coming’. A lot of new builds, more so than other towns I’ve been to. I also appreciate the relatively flat terrain, which makes cycling practical.
Great interview! Your questions were very relevant Kaylie. We visited Aveiro very briefly and didn't really feel the vibe, but after this interview it may make us want to take a second look. Thanks as always J & K!
Thank you, Georg! We appreciate the feedback. To be honest, the first time we stayed in Aveiro, we didn't feel the vibe either. By the 3rd visit, we get it and it's shot up our rating. - Josh & Kalie
Great interview Kalie! We just got back from Aveiro and what's not to love?!? I think I'd expat that! A little too touristy in the small center, but there's a decent surrounding area and how charming is Costa Nova...For a beach house! You know, what Ed said about the friendliness of Aveiro I find it's like that even in a big city like Lisbon...There are just more neighborhoods and you get to know the locals in that area. We go back to our old hood and are still remembered with a hello from our old café owner, butcher, small grocery clerks, etc...Portuguese are friendly everywhere!!
Not that Aveiro is unwalkable. It certainly is. But to work in Aveiro, or to go to Barra, Ílhavo, Gafanha Nazaré, Costa Nova or S.Jacinto, maybe the car is the best option.
I appreciate the editing, where you inserted videos to illustrate what you guys were talking about. Not looking to retire in Portugal but I love to travel. I've never seen a more informative video in a while. Keep up the great work. Thank you!
Thank you very much. We try our best to fill the videos with what the interviewer and interviewee are talking about. Sometime we don't have the exact clip we need but we earnestly try to enrich the videos with as many shots as possible. Happy travels. We hope to see you back on the channel. - Josh & Kalie
Happy to hear his son's enjoying it too! I'm a UX designer who's trying to find work in Portugal so I can start the visa application process, and I hope it'll be easier to find something during my trip there next month. This gives me a little more hope!
My university's city. The University is ysually ranked among the 5 best in Portugal, and ranks among the 300 best universities in the world. Kinda interesting seeing an outsider's perspective on "my" city. And interesting what you covered with phootage. Aveiro for me is a bit like a kaleidoscope, always changing / with a M. C. Escher's drawings kinda of vibe. The Lagoon aka Ria de Aveiro, brings to me almost an unconscious idea that I'm crossing through stuck waters, meaning stuck emotions, that actually are moving, actually evolving. The slower pace of living is indeed slow.
Great interview! I may be just a little bit biased though, I'm also Canadian from just outside Toronto and my family are from Gafanha da Nazaré like Ed's wife 😆 Love the Aveiro area ❤
That's awesome! Thank you and it's okay for that kind of bias. You know it better than most so it makes sense that you'd have a stronger opinion. - Josh & Kalie
Thanks Katie and Ed for a really enjoyable and informative interview. We’re heading to PT on Tues (from Canada). We’ve begun the process to move, but need to sell and exit Canada (which is in progress) so are a bit in limbo at the moment. We’re excited to be exploring / scouting areas in PT for the next several weeks. Aveiro just became a whole lot more enticing! 😊
Perfect climate, food, walking! How perfect! Which month Are tourists a problem? Describe your home and water/electrical fees. What are LT Rental fees. What is wait time and fees for a GP or specialist?
I have had a different experience in terms of using Bolt. I would say about 1/3 of the time the app says no cars are available. I usually get one within 15-20 minutes. As long as time is not critical this works fine. If you run on a North American time frame you should probably rent or buy a vehicle.
From what we've been told, there's not that many people that go through the process of getting it certified organic when it might actually be organic. Glad you found this video! - Josh & Kalie
Little side / curiosity note: if you go to the Maritime Museum of Ílhavo, you'll find out that the portuguese fisherman, especially from the Aveiro region, made the Cod (Bacalhau) fish populations go extinct in Labrador / New Foundland, Canada, during the first half of the Twentieth century. I think though they're reestablishing new populations now, but it's a slow process.

If you don´t mind me posting here a poem I wrote about the city: «I always meet you in Aveiro, as if I have met you in Coimbra. And I pretend to meet you in Coimbra. Actually, I really met you in Coimbra. Don't say you weren't there, your presence is unmistakable. Meeting you in Aveiro is like meeting you in Venice, there I pretend to meet you in Venice so that maybe I will really meet you in Venice. I pretend to meet you in Marrakech, Alexandria, Cairo. I pretend to meet you in Milan, and soon Lombardy becomes a kind of Salreu (Lagoon region). I pretend to meet you in Prague, and I immediately visit the eastern side of your head, where emotion is restrained quietly as a sordina mute. I could pretend to meet you anywhere else in the world so that I could find you in Aveiro. It is neither easier nor more difficult to meet you in this city of canals, but it is the city where I find you most often, the city where you also find me, and the city where, dragged in the mud, I make the most effort to find myself.»
Great interview with this nice gentleman, Kalie. I am happy for him that he was able to escape Trudeau’s Canada 😂 What is that place called where you ate those chicken wings and the nachos? 🎉
When you are working full time, especially your own business, you don't have time to shop fresh markets every two days; you have to shop for one or two weeks at a time. Retirees have the time to shop every day.
We have some friends in Porto that work remotely that shop every two days at the market. They’ve just made it a point to. Life’s full of choices and fortunately in cities like Aveiro, Porto and Lisbon, those options exist. Running a business should never be an 80-hour job. I know not everyone lives close to a grocery store, but having a business shouldn't limit anyone's ability to get out of the house once a day.
I will tell you a secret about Aveiro that hardly no one knows. Aveiro is known as the "Silicon Valley" of Europe. Some of the best tech is designed and invented here. Robotics also.
