    • @neKeiKoele
      @neKeiKoele Год назад +1

I would actually argue that Bakhmut is strategically important for both parties. For the russians it is important because it gets them closer to the administrative border of the Donetsk oblast. As long as Ukraine is fighting on the western outskirts of the city the russians haven't reached that goal (no matter how much % of the territory they occupy).
For the Ukrainians it is strategically important because the russians have committed their reserves there so every russian they know is there is a russian they don't have to look for elsewhere on the frontlines. They can target them because the town has been blown to pieces anyway and so as long as the meat grinder keeps grinding it's in Ukraines favour and Zelenskyy is right in saying it hasn't fallen, even though it technically might.

Wish the commentators would stop with the demand that
Ukraine must achieve a dramatic victory in their counter offensive
    to keep getting western support.
In WW2 the allies lost the battle for Norway,
    suffered huge losses at Dieppe,
failed badly in trying to reach a bridge too far
and no doubt suffered many other defeats
but they didn't stop fighting the war.
Russia is running lower and lower in terms of stocks of tanks
and trained tank crews and is firing far fewer shells
as though the country is worried about running out of shells
and seems to desperately be using up every non-ballistic missile
In its stores trying (and failing) to discourage Ukraine from continuing to fight
and is going to have a more and more difficult time
trying to get new troops to go to Ukraine
and most importantly is quickly running through its foreign reserves
and according to some reports will be out of those reserves
by this time next year which will make it virtually impossible
for Russia to continue fighting the war.
Even if Ukraine does not achieve an overwhelming victory
with its offensive it does not mean that Ukraine won't win the war.
And the worst thing for long term peace would be if Russia was allowed
to keep more territory it seized in its current invasion.
