Though in part this song is very much based on Clementine's personal experience of being bullied (something that also deeply traumatised me when growing up) - Benjamin also said this of the song; "I certainly am very fortunate that I am not experiencing what the people in Syria are experiencing, but I think it all comes down to one thing, and that is bullying. The Americans and the English, we bully people. In the song the reason why it's a phantom, is that we can't see the reason. Not seeing the reason, not seeing why we get bullied, is basically the phantom." ...Clementine is the only artist I can listen to right now, no living person even comes close. Jaques Brel, Leonard Cohen, Nina Simone, Bowie, Lou Reed, Barbara (the French singer) - are all favourites of mine but all are dead. Benjamin keeps the spirit alive!
A super mind. Devastating power with music. To be devastated, is good. Unless he's talking about you. Time doesn't keep talent. I said damn. Thank you, sir. I have all of your songs saved and you devastate me. Thank you.
The soul that rests and sings within Bejamin Clementine captures all that that is sad and beautiful in humanity; abolishing the fear and only arriving at Love for this Artist.
Yeah, but outside his UK/EU tour he plays some festivals during the sumer. In July he'll be in Slovakia -Pohoda festival and then in Czech republic -Colours of Ostrava festival
Clementine composed this song after reading the work of psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott, who wrote about children who have experienced bullying in the home and at school. He related the experience of these kids with his own childhood. The "little city of Aleppo" symbolizes the place where bullies are encountered.
I know a lot of people find Nina Simone in Benjamin but Benjamin is a true spirit of his own. Both of them are so unique in their own way. His words are as if eternally intertwined with every single note he plays. Golden rays of sunshine but also dark as the depths of the ocean or galaxies never found. It's a voice so deep as the unconscious of oneself but so high and bright as an eternal star. The battles and the struggles are appearing in every raw moaning or in a minor chord. Well done, thank you for being such an inspiration, thank you for fighting and providing us with this special melodies.
Agree. I find it tiresome the way everyone has to divert attention away to another artist. Those comparisons have no natural end. How about let’s assume everybody is influenced by everyone, and then maybe we can be present for what is right now.
The video and audio record of thousands of performers is so accessible now...where is the use to make comparisons. Just listen to who you want.@CikisHelyzet
Absolute genius. People have been wondering where our next Michael Jackson or Prince will come from. Well here he is. And he is pure mastery of sound and feeling.
There's a poignant joy in seeing an artist grow into their own greatness. He gives all of us a place to connect to his art within ourselves, and that place is beautiful. Thank you, Benjamin Sainte-Clementine.
Benjamine has a very special soul and shows it in each piece of music, puts us in touch with his heightened consciousness, his art goes beyond our knowledge something difficult to decipher.
I just heard his music for about half and hour and now I'm so into him, He has such strange beauty that provokes a very deep attraction type, not superficial but human... Gosh is beautiful to feel this way, thank you Benjamin.
When I listen to this I am so disturbed and in love at the same time. I've never had this mixture of being scared and happy before listening to this song.
Brilliant. Tears of understanding...Tears of joy...Tears of horror....Tears of sin. Begin to understand. life life life rice. Kneel on rice. Punishment. Cry. Cry Strong! CRY. PROUD!
Benjamin is such a special kind of artist. So much soul in every note. I just know I need to see him play live. His energy and everything. I cannot describe it. I want to experience it. His music is beyond ♥
Leandro Oliveira I already purchased tickects for his concert in Bristol. I can't wait to see him... I already have goosebumps from his studio recordings
After watching over this several times over a couple of weeks, the song and the visuals continue to hit me like echos. Inferring this from the video, this song could partially be about the plight of the children of Syria, and their suffering. The part where the kids lay on top of the moon? Maybe that's meant to represent how far away the conflict in Syria feels to most people in Europe and the U.S. Even with the recent tragic terrorist attacks in Spain, Britain, France, Germany, California, Florida, the children who are dying in Syria remain out of sight, so far away that it's like they're on the moon. The song also seems to be about bullying, but the Syrian aspect resonates with me the most. Benjamin Clementine is a genius
Someone else commented after you with BC's quote; "I certainly am very fortunate that I am not experiencing what the people in Syria are experiencing, but I think it all comes down to one thing, and that is bullying. The Americans and the English, we bully people. In the song the reason why it's a phantom, is that we can't see the reason. Not seeing the reason, not seeing why we get bullied, is basically the phantom." He's incredible!
In another life, I would love to just learn music from Benjamin Clementine right from the start, and become someone totally foreign to the person I am in this life. Someone who sees music like this, who lives it like this.
In my heart i dedicate this to my friend who just passed away of malaria in Zimbabwe. Bullied and overcome but full of forgiveness. This depth of feeling and bardic truth is rare and beautiful and no way to thank you, may you not be overcome for a long time.
Still have this on repeat and Im upset that his glorious voice keeps me hypnotize as though I never heard it before. Why tease us, Sir Clementine? LOVE IT! The kids are adorable, thats little dude from the pic on your website.
This piece provokes once buried feelings to rise to the surface and just when they are about to manifest you...forgive. Definitely a risk making this and wow what a great outcome. Thank you Sir Benjamin
Did i make a comparison... I only said i got a vibe of David Bowie and Nikita got a Nick Cave/Floyd vibe. Its an opinion and based on the likes i guess a lot of other listeners felt the same. Dont be so negative 🍻
In this day and age all artist are inspired((in)directly) by other ones so if you hear, see and feel things that are similar its quite normal. Sad to see that you have to feel the need calling others stupid over this... Says a lot about you... Peace be with you!
I love him so much, I feel so close and vibrant listening to Benjamin. The perfect music for the fall season, so haunting but poetic... the addition of harpsichord in his new album makes everything just more magical.
benjamin...you have breathed new life, spirit., joy and hope into me...i'm dancing and singing around my house to your music every day.....joy, and peace to you and your adorable wife and baby, see u in america this summer?....... hope, ....hope.....hope....your 76 year old fan, rosalind
Everytime I listen to his music it happens to me the same, the first time I'm not sure if I like it or not, somehow, that manages me to listen to it a second time, the third time I have fallen in love, thank you Benjamin
pureafricanqueen 100%, i am shocked someone like him exists in our generation. What f*****g emotion in his works, he takes you on a journey from start to finish.
it is difficult to say that he is inspired by someone, but for sure he is and will be an inspiration for lots of artists, i liked the video b4 I watched it.
first heard this Einstein of emotion filled music last year, and since then i cant get enough of his music. in a nut shell i cant wait to buy more of his albums. Saint Clementine you are a genius, enjoy your tea and croissants and make more music
So he lurs you in with calme sounds and then throws you in what seems like a place of darkness then slowly pulls you out back into a light brighter than you ever knew.
This guy is like David Bowie cool...light-years ahead of us. His voice is mesmerizing.
this man is on another level
Wow, I just made a comment about his level and 5 seconds later I saw yours. He really is on a whole different level.
For about two weeks I can't stop listening to Benjamin and Arca.
He is dead but come back a hundred times to bring us the message
Though in part this song is very much based on Clementine's personal experience of being bullied (something that also deeply traumatised me when growing up) - Benjamin also said this of the song;

His work is poetry
Alex Pilfold it literally is but he's also a pianist, a songwriter and a singer
A super mind. Devastating power with music. To be devastated, is good. Unless he's talking about you.
Time doesn't keep talent.
I said damn.
Thank you, sir. I have all of your songs saved and you devastate me. Thank you.
Coming back to this song and video six years later and every part of this still has me shaken up. He's ahead of his time by several years.

Tommy Juliano: Ok.
You know it's an art, when you can feel the song in your soul. Can't wait to see you in a month.
Nftwae where's he playing?
Marcello Sgarbini There's a concert schedule beneath the video
Yeah, but outside his UK/EU tour he plays some festivals during the sumer. In July he'll be in Slovakia -Pohoda festival and then in Czech republic -Colours of Ostrava festival
How was it? I wanted to go to one of his concerts in NYC but it got canceled and I was so heartbroken. I can't wait to see him in concert.
It was amazing! Seeing him that close and hearing him live was such a wonderful experience!

Visually and sonically gorgeous. Something fresh for the avant-garde fans.
A masterpiece. I keep coming back to this song ever since it was released.
This guy is a music legend in waiting - I see so so much in him
Absolute genius. People have been wondering where our next Michael Jackson or Prince will come from. Well here he is. And he is pure mastery of sound and feeling.
Realize how the work of a true artist always surprises, Benjamin's clompletude, he walks with the music in rhythms that he decides
one of the top harpsichord bangers of 2017 if u ask me
True, along side "Sleeping Powder" of Gorillaz
All of his music is just purely beautiful. This man needs way more attention.
this song is the definition of perfection.
There's a poignant joy in seeing an artist grow into their own greatness. He gives all of us a place to connect to his art within ourselves, and that place is beautiful. Thank you, Benjamin Sainte-Clementine.
Genius personified.

You just can't get enough of this guy when you finally reach his music....
the piano solo starting at 2:36! I can't stop listening to it on repeat. Pure ecstasy
Benjamine has a very special soul and shows it in each piece of music, puts us in touch with his heightened consciousness, his art goes beyond our knowledge something difficult to decipher.
It's like he knows something we all don't know.

The moon also represents balance. The tides, etc.

I can't listen the part at 2:00 with headphones on. His whispering in my right ear sends physical shivers down my spine.

Thank you Sir Benjamin
He's got everything in abundance what it takes to become one of the most legendary musical icons of all time.
i got some David Bowie vibes of this. Creativity on a whole other level. Keep it up Benjamin!
I just wrote something very similar about him- iconoclastic, ahead of his time. Definitely Bowie traits.
You called?
I got a Screaming Jay Hawkins vibe from the costume hear was wearing at the start. Also a bit of Floyd and Nick Cave.
Did i make a comparison... I only said i got a vibe of David Bowie and Nikita got a Nick Cave/Floyd vibe. Its an opinion and based on the likes i guess a lot of other listeners felt the same. Dont be so negative 🍻
