- While George Romero has given us many films worthy of deconstructing, there's a specific film from the 70's that stands above the rest. Whether it’s the extreme gore, the blue zombies, or the mall setting, there are plenty of quirks to love, as we cover Dawn of the Dead!

Romero and Savini were such a great combo
The hardest agree I've ever agreed
Nobody did it better than those two.
I was at a horror convention with some friends many years ago. I was not a horror fanatic, but I knew a bit. While a friend was standing in line waiting to meet Ken Foree, I was hanging back and wound up chatting with this middle aged woman who really looked out of place at a horror convention. Figured she was there with her kids. We chatted about movies for about ten minutes when someone came up to get HER autograph! I was like, “Oh, you were in a horror movie? Which one,” to which she pointed to the banner hanging behind her that read, “Dawn of the Dead.” I started laughing because thought I had seen the movie, I didn’t recognize Gaylen Ross!
Some younger audiences won’t appreciate it for what it is and the era it came from, but it will always be the best for me and a staple in my collection.
I know zoomers that like this movie.
I’m 21 but I grew up on it, always watching it on a VHS copy my dad made in the 80’s. So I may have a bias but I don’t think so as I’ve seen films I thought were good as a kid again and they were definitely bad - but this wasn’t one of them.
I’m 17 but I love this film! It’s my favourite horror film ever!
For a zombie movie, the characters are so sensible thr movie stands out amongst even modern zombie movies. Even younger movie watchers will appreciate it.
I Love Dawn of the Dead 🧟♂️
Rest in Peace George Romero 🪦
My number one favourite movie of all time the greatest masterpiece ever made
What's interesting is Tarantino mentioned the part that shocked me the most in this movie. The lady in the housing project, who runs up and hugs her zombie boyfriend. How he bites chunks out of her neck and arm looks so damn real. It stuck with me, and Tarantino apparently.
Her scream was real. The actor bit her shoulder accidentally. But I agree, It's the nastiest scene in the movie IMHO.
@@charlesdavis7285 - Totally. It's what made practical effects seem real to me.
Those 2 bites are so nasty there as good as the bites in day of the dead. I would love to know how savini did the Gag???
Same!
This was my favorite Romero Zombie flick.
My number one favourite movie of all time the greatest masterpiece ever made
I remember my first time watching this on VHS as a kid. It was the first time I'd seen a gory horror film that was also a genuinely *good* film. Left a huge impact on me.
An absolutely miraculous film, every horror fan should see it at least once...or hundreds of times, like myself.
My number one favourite movie of all time the greatest masterpiece ever made
There's nothing more to say about this masterpiece of a film that hasn't already been said
My vote for the greatest horror movie of all time.
I met Joe Pilato at a Fan Days convention in Dallas about a year before he died. Really nice guy
When there is no more room in hell ..
There will NEVER be another Dawn of the Dead
9:00 It was called Dawn of the Dead instead of Dawn of the Living Dead because Romero didn't have the rights to those words "...of the Living Dead", but John A. Russo did and he used that right for Return of the Living Dead. This has been a known fact for decades so how the hell did he get that dumb idea that it was called Dawn of the Dead because it had a more ominous feel to it?!
Came here to say this
What a great adventure zombie horror film Romero's Dawn of the Dead is. His films will live on thankfully, including Day of the Dead, Night, Survival, Land, etc.
I so love this movie. Such a classic. I first saw this as a kid about 40 years ago and have watched it many times. Loved the trip down memory lane. Cheers man.
Great video. I've actually seen 2 or 3 different versions of Dawn 79. My dad took me to a midnight showing when I was a teenager. The part that gave me nightmares was not any of the grossest parts... for most people. It was during the raid on the tenement building. When the dead blue husband bites into the brown skin of his wife causing red blood to flow, those colors got to me. Made me wanna puke the instant he broke the skin. Thing is, I knew what would happen... and it still got me.
This is not only my favorite of the Romero series, but my favorite zombie movie of all time.
one of my favorite films of all time. I love how it starts in that we get thrown right into this world. it's goofy at times and I love it.
ohhhh ya! one of the few horror movies you can get drunk high or trip to and still have a good time
Shout out to argento's cut of the film too
This film is literally my childhood. My older Brother had a "copy" on VHS, was obsessed about it (and still is), we shared a Bedroom so...
Still the daddy of zombie films for me. So much time spent developing characters and how the isolation and dwindling hope would get to you. Still plenty of zombie action though. This was a pinnacle watch in my teen years.
Someone put all 3 versions together in a fan edit. It's free online and I suggest you find it and watch it if you haven't. Although this is the daddy, in recent years my personal taste has shifted to Day of the Dead. Again, amazing.
Shout out to the 2004 remake which I was dead against (pun intended) but I went to the pics to watch as the trailer was so strong. Great remake.
If I could see this in a theater....also, I'm pissed that a local horror convention I didn't know about till a couple years ago had Gaylen Ross, Ken Foree, and yes, George goddamn Romero back around 2016. I would have bugged out meeting all three of them.
I feel sorry for those who were too young or not even born and couldn't see this when it came out.
But then again they probably didn't have the frustration of waiting another 20 years before an uncut version was available to buy as all the early VHS and DVD copies in the UK were cut. And even the ones available now are not the version screened in the UK.
People really need to stop droning on about the "uncut" version its not that amazing, it doesn't really add anything and it only adds 3 minutes to the movie.
@@lutherheggs451 BS - if you saw the film on it's first release those first two bites were a BIG shock and to spend the next twenty years having to put up with only versions of the film available was without those moments was to put it mildly fecking annoying.
And as for dismissing something because it 'only adds 3 mins' clearly shows a lack of respect to the vision and skill of the director and the editor who had their work butchered by censors.
I worked at a thrift store in the bay area back in the late 2000s and someone brought this tape in to donate. I snatched it up and took it home. Loved it but it had its disturbing moments. The helicopter scalp buzz scene for one. Nice to see the black guy lives at the end; maybe making up for the original version back in the 60s.
You know, I was only thinking the other day that I miss George Romero.
The greatest zombie movie of all times!
THIS IS A MASTERPIECE !!!!
My number one favourite movie of all time the greatest masterpiece ever made
A literal masterpiece
My number one favourite movie of all time the greatest masterpiece ever made
I used to have the anchor bay box set, I regret selling it.
The zombie apocalypse trope this film invented will be replicated for atleast another hundred years
"When there's no more room in he'll, the dead will walk the Earth."
From the time it came out, through hundreds of midnight showings on to this very day, it remains my all-time favorite. Why I love the genre. He deserved the World War Z budget and star treatment. Imagine what he could have done with his franchise.
I miss Romero too!
Dawn still remains to me, the greatest zombie movie ever made, and up there with greatest horror movie ever made. Romero never reached these heights again.
My all time fave film!
My number one favourite movie of all time the greatest masterpiece ever made
Really enjoyed this movie. The characters were great, and when your effects we're awesome even if they seemed corny at times. I have a feeling that that Joe Pilato cop in the deleted scene was actually Captain Rhodes before he went to the military.
As much as I'm glad for the ending we got, the bleak ending would've been epic. The chopper blades shitting out at the end showing that they wouldn't have made it out of there after all. That's great writing.
The ending is lot more dark, in my opinion. How could they survive in a world when humans are, maybe, 1 vs 1000 reanimated and cannibal corpses ? An 8 months pregnant woman, the male mate that has lost all hopes, with huge PTSD, with very poor amount of food, water, gasoline, guns and ammo ? No more radio or TV informations or guidances . They are at the end, and they know it. There are no places to go. We can try to imagine their future, but it's so dark, extremely uncertain. They are doomed. There is no hope for them, it is clear as the bright sun.
im glad the ending wasnt bleak, imo. the rest of the film the characters are surrounded by plot armor, so a pleak ending would feel silly. on the other end, i feel like when peter decided not to kill himself, i feel like that was one of the few times the characters were believable. when theyre silly, its bad. when theyre realistic, its good. the movie sits on the fence about whether or not it wants to be camp, and so gets the worst of both worlds. the opening section is realism heaven, but it trails off beyond that.
Great video. I did not know that Romero shortened the title because he thought it was more ominous. I always had heard there was a split between him and his writing partner who went off to make Return of the living dead and had gotten the rights to use living dead.
I'm a huge fan of the Zombie genre and in my humble opinion 'Dawn Of The Dead' is still the greatest Zombie movie ever made! RIP George A Romero! ✌💀🎥
I still remember hearing the ominous commercial on my elementary school bus driver’s radio in the late 70s. He was basically “Otto” from ‘The Simpsons’ with a 70s 'stache…
Didn’t realize until many years later that it was released “unrated” and shown as a midnight movie back then.
The Argento version is DOPE, btw! Well worth checking out.
Please do a video on "The Beyond" and Fulci's other zombie flicks.
When talking about the follow ups to Dawn of the Dead, you have a picture in your video from spanish director Jorge Grau's movie "Let Sleeping Corpses Lie" that actually predates Dawn by four years, as it came out in 1974.
Romero wasn't playing a zombified Santa.
He was a featured character, one of the bike gang, called 'Old Nick', who dressed in a Santa Claus outfit. He was completely cut out of all three main versions.
He was also the TV studio' s chief director, with his wife, too.
@@user-yf1ye3hm3f He's also in the airport scene when Peter gets attacked by the two children.
The new hi-def version is so good it can be paused and you can see a large, hairy, soup bowl hand surrounded by a cloud of smoke.
I think he may have thrown one of the children into shot.
I love Dawn of the Dead.
Land of the Dead is my guilty pleasure.
Day of the Dead & Night of the Living Dead are great as well.
Great episode! Always fun to see Dawn of the Dead love! It’s been my all-time favorite movie for the last 30yrs and I never get tired of it.
I'd adore seeing you deconstruct the first Childs play movie. My mother went to high school with the director. She was best friends with his...sister I think? He used to film the two of them running around with knives and stuff like that, seems he always wanted to do horror movies.
Great video! Would love to see this done for Day of the Dead, my favorite of the trilogy.
Greatest horror film ever created. Period.
What made this classic so magically amazing is really the heart and soul. Excellent actors, thrilling ambiance, excellent music, superb acting, and everlasting memorable characters. I grew up with this and the directors cut is my preferred version. I was so happy to get the Second Sight 4k release.
As huge of a fan of obscure horror I am; Dawn of the dead, Evil Dead and Burial Ground are my top fav horror movies ever.
Burial ground with that 40 year old playing a kid? That one?
@@TheDiplomat717 Biting of mommy's nipple lol I think he does mean that one yes but not one of the 3 titles he mentioned actually is obscure! (a tip for that kid: if a movie plays in the cinema and has always been readily available on VHS/DVD/Blu than it can not be considered as obscure!)
Day will always be my number one but I love dawn, even the silly parts with the pie and that hilarious fall flyboy does when he whacks that zombie with the hammer, I laugh my ass off every time I see that.
Seen it on vhs when l was a teen ( 56 y/o now) , first horror movie l ever saw where l felt like the people didn’t react like idiots facing the zombies , they had a plan which kinda worked for a while and so , it made me more demanding for all the horror and zombie movies that l wohld watch after that , great fun , great movie!👍👍👍
I love this movie , not only is it a great story but as a biker I love those choppers.👍
Just saw it playing in real 3D just now in theaters. Why can't a zombie movies be made today just like this gem.
Think the walking dead finished the genre off
Def my fave overall in the series.
My number one favourite movie of all time the greatest masterpiece ever made
Love this movie still like visiting from time to time
R.I.P. Flyboy 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢Dawn of The Dead rulez forever 👀🔨🔨🔨🔨 greetings from Hamburg Germany 👍
great movie!! i ordered a VHS of this on ebay back in the late 90's and Aussie customs confiscated and destroyed it. good times!!!
My favorite movie of all time
This was not only the masterpiece of zombi movies, and horror in general. It' s a masterpiece on its own, with so many keys of lecture. Surely, one of the twenty more complete and absolutely brilliant movies of all times, amongst all genres.
Can't wait for a crisp 4k version of this film.
Romero working with Argento and Savini and Goblin to make this masterpiece!
When I was a kid, I would go to the video store during the summer with the money I made mowing neighbor's lawn and ask the college guys working what horror film I should watch. The second one they ever suggested to me , the first was Truth or Dare a critical Madness, was Dawn of the Dead. It blew my mind when I was a kid just the sheer scope of the movie and the idea of illegally occupying buildings during a zombie apocalypse. I fell in love with this film when I was 10 ....so I was still pretty scared to watch it then too LOL. The part Works flyboy would come out of the elevator such a shocking scene to me when I was a kid. And then the part where he remembers where they built the wall and just tears it down I was like oh my God he's going to kill his pregnant girlfriend LOL
I have the Ultimate Edition and I had no clue that Romero wrote a book or tried to so I'm going to go order that right now.
You forgot to mention that zombie by Fulci was called Zombie 2 because the original release in Europe for Dawn of the Dead was called Zombie. Fulci totally framed his film like a sequel. And then as I'm sure you know there was zombie three and four then there were some birds killing people. I think it goes up to 6 or 7 with the films progressively getting worse with each "sequel".
I saw you splice in a scene from burial ground oh, I think that's a pretty good zombie film if I'm being honest. It's nice and sleazy just how you want it. And you have a midget playing a child who bites his mother's tit off.
If I was to pick a version I'm kind of fond of the European cut because the music is so great and it is a lot faster-paced but I also do love every version if I'm being honest. If I was to show the film to someone for the first time I would probably show the European cut just because it's faster paced and keeps so much of the gore. Romero outside of the zombie did a few good films. I would say Martin is a excellent vampire story with very disturbing scenes.
I would love to see you break down Day of the Dead next. And you might as well finish it with Land of the Dead and talk about all the problems. I actually don't know a lot about the production of Land of the Dead so that would be pretty interesting to me
Dawn of the Dead is if not the best, but easily one of the best horror films ever made
Have you seen the fan edit that combines all 3 versions? Love your story. I first watched this around 11/12 years old and it became a favourite of mine.
@@weemonk23 are you talking about the " extended mall hour " edit? I have seen it and I'm pretty sure I watched it on RUclips.. it's a great idea and significantly longer then any other cut I own.
Thank you for your kind words
@@kodiekulp That's the one! Really enjoyable. Shame it's not official in release.
One of my favorite films still

Awesome! Day of The Dead next please
I thought the Gaylen Ross dummy was the one used in the scene where Peter blasts off half of a female zombie's face, that was coming at Roger in the truck.
This is one of those rare times when the original and the remake I love equally, if for different reasons.
The true reason why Romero dropped the word "living" isn't because it sounds better (that's debatable anyway). The flesh eating "ghoul" (not zombie) was a new type of movie monster, but it wasn't entirely a Romero creation, it was also fathered by John Russo, and each went on to work on their respective projects. Since both shared creative rights over it, they decided Romero could keep the continuity of Night, while Russo would get rights over the "living Dead" title. So Romero followed with Dawn and Day, and Russo wrote *Return of the Living Dead.*
Day of the dead is one of the best movies ever made. George is one of the greatest film makers of all time. And joe, choke on em'!😛
I love the unknown facts you give. I know some Pagans but I didn't know they had anything to do with this movie.
Wasn't his widow involved with turning his book into a film???? I remember reading something about him having another film in development before he passed away and she wanted to see it come to fruition.
I saw this movie when I was 8 at the drive inn. My folks would pick a movie and we would go. What did we get ourselves into. My God I was in shock and my mom would not take the trash out she thought the dawn of the dead guys were out there
I really like both Dawn and Day they both hit it right
I have a autographed copy that George A Romero signed of this script
I used to have the 4 disc box set.......
I think you accidentally included a still from 'Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue' when talking about the Italian rip-offs; it was predominantly Spanish produced and came out four years BEFORE Dawn.
I came to say the same thing lol
Finally you all do this movie.
LOVE THIS MOVIE 🎉

Salem's Lot TV version with David Soul
Shane that Ronero never got a good payoff from his original zombie movies Hollywood and AMC. Got rich from it and he didn't get budgets on movies he always had to compromise for less. I MET HIM HE WAS A NICE NORMAL GUY APPRECIATED FANS. RIP GEORGE NEVER FORGET YOU THANKS YOU!!!!!!
great review, thank you for doing it!! Any chance of doing one on " Q" ????

Such a great movie
When are you doing Day of the Dead?🤔
I've listened to The Living Dead as an audiobook twice. It's that good. I'm going to buy the physical paper back.
I imagine Jonestown and other killings slowed the release of dawn in the US
The living dead rights soon to be brought by Netflix or amazon.
Do land of the Dead please.
De todas las películas zombis solo los camarografos se salvan
I remember going to the drive-in movie theater with my parents when I was 9 years when Dawn of the Dead came out and I really like this movie
I'm on a George Romero kick as of late.
There's not enough videos on this great movie lol
I prefer the Cannes version, so hilarious about the runaway band of cops asking our band of survivors for smokes and they ALL LIE LOL!😂
Greed is a pretty prevalent thing in Dawn; Romero’s prediction of the 80’s imho
well, wasnt zombiies creeping flesh anything to do with these? i remember watching it back in the eighties and it was supposed to be a follow up ????
Zombie Flesh Eaters is an alternate title to Fulci's Zombi 2, which is the italian sequel to Dawn

'Zombie Creeping Flesh' was the British title for 'Hell of the Living Dead' aka 'Virus' and about half a dozen other titles.
It was nothing to do with Romero, except the writer/Director shamelessly ripped off DotD, even using Goblin's music. Although not their DotD music.
I like it, though.
I miss young Romero,.. his last few movies,.. not so much lol
The DARIO ARGENTO CUT is superior to any other version! There, I said it.
@@commietube_censorship_sucks the complete 140 minute cut may be the definitive version but he is right when saying that the European cut is the superior version (i.e. better pacing, gorier and more Goblin instead of library music)
@@commietube_censorship_sucks I have seen the 155 minute version here on RUclips but we seem to disagree on the Euro version. Love your enthusiasm about the movie and at least we both really LOVE the DAWN even if it is in different versions.✌
Argento cut is worst cut
Was it 107?
ummm... Didn't you say you were gonna deconstruct it? Like... ?
👍👍
Name a better zombie movie
night, easily. if all you care for is watching idiots act stupid and get surrounded by plot armor, dawn is just fine. the first 20 minutes, the radio station section is fantastic, but the rest trails off. the ending did surprise me tho, i thought the woman would crash and peter would "sacrifice" himself. dawn could have been so much, and it wasnt.
Highly respect everyone's opinion, but this is one of the most overrated horror films of all time for me. Even Night ages better if you ask me.
Demons!
First black man to survive a horror movie plus he starred in and flew off in a helicopter with a white woman😂
