  • A new history video on the surrender of Maine in Europa Universalis 4. This is an event that occurs between England and France at the very start of the game. In history, this marked the start of the French reconquest of France and the decline of English holdings in France. Some have argued that this can be said to be the beginning of the end of the Hundred Years' War, with England's worst king on the throne.

I really like the history episodes. I think a lot of the depth of EU4's content comes from the truly fascinating history that inspired it. Looking forward to more of these. - Muss

Have a follow up event where you can make her the proper regent at the cost of 1 stability, allowing a quick way to get rid of Henry and help England in the 100 years war, or choose to get a modifier guaranteeing thr Wars of the Roses will happen soon ish.

The Maine did not surrender. As clearly stated on the memorial in Havana harbor, It was sacrificed for Imperialist voracity. Obviously there was time travel involved and the ship killed its own great-grandfather.

      Maine script
Hello guys and welcome to a video on the history behind the surrender of Maine. This is an event in eu4 where England has the option to either surrender the province of Maine to the French or not. if England doesn’t surrender the province of Maine. This leads to France either deciding to enter a defensive war with England calling in all its allies or backing down from the fight. So, without further ado, lets have a look at how this event occurred and what actually happened during this time.
We begin by going back to 1444 during the 100-year war between France and England. after a long hard-fought war between Henry the 6th of England and Charles the 7th of France. Both sides agreed to have peace talks in Tours. Eventually, England and France signed the treaty of Tours. The deal was that Henry the 6th would marry Margaret of Anjou who was a relative of Charles the 7th. In return Charles would gain the province of Maine in 3 years’ time.
many English nobles thought this was a terrible idea and to freely hand over provinces to the French would be a sign of weakness and be massively unpopular in England. However, Henry the 6th insisted the peace treaty was signed and he thought it would naively bring everlasting peace between the English and the French. Henry was not known for his political wisdom and rather more interested in praying rather then governing the land.
Charles was over the moon when the peace treaty was signed and thought this was a massive diplomatic victory for France. Although the English had optimistically thought that a marriage alliance would turn René of Anjou into a major advocate for peace at the French court, therefore giving England more power in the French court. Charles thought a marriage between the England and the Anjou dynasty would not allow England to gain an alliance with a more rebellious French dynasty such as the count of Armagnac. The Anjou family was also nearly bankrupt and therefore had very limited financial resources, Rene admitted he couldn’t even put any money towards the marriage between Henry the 6th and Margaret.
Over the next few years, Charles would build up his army and prepare for war against England once more. Meanwhile England was divided on the issue of Maine and infighting began. Margaret of Anjou arrested the duke of Gloucester for his rejection of the ceding of Maine to the French.
Despite the attempts of the English to delay the ceding of Maine. Eventually with the threat of war from Charles. Henry gave Maine to Charles thinking this would lead to permanent peace. However, he had no intention of making a permanent peace. As he told the men of Reims just six months after regaining possession of Maine, he had already decided that he would recover Normandy as well. The surrender of Maine was a turning point for France since, Over the next few years Charles would slowly take more English territory in France such as Normandy and Gascony. Meanwhile Henry’s mental health began to decline. He would sometimes run around naked in the English countryside and let Margaret of Anjou assert her power over him. This infuriated the English nobles in England and eventually led to the war of the roses where Henry was overthrown.
Thank you guys for watching, please let me know what you think in the comments and check out some of my other event history videos.
