The employee at my local HD store gave me a great tip -- before cutting the upper rail to fit, at 1:47 in the video, he suggested to put Styrofoam blocks (that I found elsewhere) between each of the upright pieces of the rail, to keep the aluminum from wiggling back and forth with each pass of the saw (not shown in the video). I suppose wood blocks would also work, but then you're cutting through wood and aluminum instead of foam and aluminum. Also, he said that if you're using a power saw of any type, where you will make the full cut with a single pass of the saw, make sure to go from front to back (of the way the rail will face when installed), so that the uglier part of the cut will face in toward the closet and not out toward the room. I was able to file the rough edges of mine, but not everyone has a metal file.
(Also, at 3:40 where it shows to extend the wheels out -- don't skimp on this. I was lazy or in a hurry and didn't put my wheels out quite far enough, maybe half an inch (~1cm) instead of 3/4 inches (~1.5 cm). I learned the hard way that it is easier to move the wheels when the whole weight of the door isn't pushing down on them.
One last tip from me: I bought the widest mirrored doors available from Contractors Warehouse. They were heavy, but possible for me to install myself, if I had cleared out enough space in the room. However, I still had furniture in the room, so I couldn't maneuver the doors myself around the furniture, so my son had to help me negotiate the odd direction we had to hold the doors above the bed. If the room had been empty, I could have done it myself (I am 5' 7" and average build, average strength adult female).
@greg stuartly where do I buy these materials? This video looks a lot more simple than the sliding doors with brackets on top/barn door type of setting and the sliding pocket door. I really like this because it’s minimal and mimics the pocket door look. I’d love to know where to get this as it would help me a lot. Thank you.
it was hard to drill the holes at my house and I didn't catch the part about the wider box, it was not in the paper directions. I used a vice grip because my guy friend told me too and it didn't turn out even when I cut it. I tried to cut it with the sawzal because the hacksaw was really hard to cut. Finally I got it with the hacksaw. I have to say it is harder than it looks.
I bought the Colonial bi-pass 60x96 sliding doors. Everything went well until I got to the vinyl top guides, directions say to snap them into place. They do not snap into place! There is not a video to show how to snap them into place and what they look like when they are set in place. The one I think I did correctly is tilted slightly, not sure if that is correct?
Along with watching a fantastically beautiful girl, I actually saw why the botched doors I'm re-working in my house have problems. There was no wood strip ever installed under the track and it was installed directly atop carpet, so it's now all warped. I'm going to have to try to bend it back into shape and find a substitute for the wood strip.
Cut the metal frames with a miter box and hacksaw my ass. I want to see Barbie actually do it, not wave her hands around in the air. Show the behind the scenes footage of them using a chop saw.
