Known as 'the sprinter's jersey', the green jersey is often contested by the fast men of the bunch.

The green jersey, or maillot vert, is awarded to the rider who finishes the race with the highest total of points. These points are awarded at the finish line of every stage, and also at intermediate sprint points during the course of the mass start stages. The organisers have designed it so the majority of points are available on 'low difficulty' days, which are typically flat and end in a bunch sprint. This is why the likes of Peter Sagan and Mark Cavendish have been very successful in this classification in recent years.
