I was watching the championship playoff yesterday and the referee had to explain his decision. Why don’t VAR have to do this too.
This is a new rule it's applied in the Bundesliga and was tested in the championship playoffs final (other championship games don't have VAR) basically if the referee was called to make a call be VAR (a disputed penalty for example) he has to explain why he gave/canceled it. Here though the referee wasn't called on be VAR, he made a decision by himself that it was a foul and thus VAR can't intervene so even though if this law was applied it wouldn't have made a difference. It's sad though cause villa really deserved to be in ucl in my opinion.

Ref should have waited for the goal going in before making the decision. He could still blow the whistle, but at least allow the situation to be resolved first so it could be checked by VAR. Junior mistake by the ref. I personally think the goal should have been given, but you could appeal either way. Sad day for Villa, Newcastle was the real winner.

The ref denied of Roger's goal and given of Man U's penalty are absolutely ugly.
Roger's goal we can see from replay that Bayindir lose possession of ball when Roger touch the ball.
For penalty, Amad not even in possession of the ball, and he drag his leg to block Villa player's way which was opposite side of where ball was, it absolutely tell that Amad not intend to play ball but play opponent footballer, this should not be a foul or penalty and Amad deserve yellow for unsportmanship.

While I am happy for Newcastle to get the spot, I do believe that a few (if not some) EPL officiating referees are not ethically fit and might have some betting interests for the whole season, most try to cover it smartly, but when things matter, they take their chance and most of the time get away with it.

Not sure theres anything wrong here. Martinez clearly changes direction to deliberately take Hojlund out when he is 1 on 1. Whether or not Hojlund is good enough to take it, its a goal scoring opportunity. Then penalty is clearly a penalty, he treads on his ankle inside the box. Even if its accidental, its still a foul.
Rogers goal... hes given the foul straight away. Technically the law says that the ball is deemed under control if the keeper has one hand in contact when the ball is on the floor, sort of like a rugby try. Its tight, and it certainly isnt what common sense would call under control, but goalkeepers are generally a protected species and i think that gets given by most refs most games. And once hes blown the whistle, rightly or wrongly, the ball is dead and Rogers shot is void.
