Mackenzie Dinkins Gary Oldman has made an amazing job voicing Viktor Reznov. But as an advanced Russian speaker, I like Russian dub of Reznov more. Maybe it's partly because Russian character speaking Russian sounds more natural to me, but still :D
Dimitri’s death was always so brutal to me, especially after spending so many hours playing as him in World At War. It was just so visceral and real, and the fact he didn’t go out in a big action scene as a hero but instead was betrayed and shoved in a gas chamber just felt so wrong (which totally work for both this game and WAW). I haven’t played Black Ops 1 in years, Hell at this point it’s probably been almost decade, but I’ll never forget it’s story.
Yea WaW was my fist call of duty game and black ops was such a blast, you can even say Dimitris death kicks starts Modern Warfare with the Spec ops troops showing up and being killed by a world ending weapon.
I agree. His last moments were spent trying to desperately break through the glass to reach his friend on the other side. What Reznov says about his death is awful. And it's even more awful that I agree. Dmitri was a hero who deserved better. He should've died in Berlin.
@@jasonflake7696 Cold War, which seems to take place in the Black Ops timeline, has a cameo by Imran Zakheav, implying Black Ops and Modern Warfare are linked. Makes me wonder if the unnamed chemical agent Makarov uses in MW3 is actually Nova 6. They're both a green yellow gas that kills near instantly.
The worst part about all of this is, most of us who played Call of Duty started just around this time we were just small children, zombies were still scary, I remember seeing Reznov from World at War, I was pulled in instantly, such a messed up and tragic end, but something I could believe easily.
"Reznov never escaped the gulag" was ultimately a big letdown for me in Black Ops. Not because it was a bad twist or bad storytelling (quite the opposite) but because I liked the guy so damn much it was disappointing to hear that he was actually dead.
He’s reported as dead but to be honest it’s never been a confirmed seeing of reznov body. He’s MIA not KIA. Unless of course he’s proven dead. I know Hudson said reznov is dead but I never seen reznov actually die so who knows. Hudson is CIA not KGB he has no business of knowing whether reznov is alive.
It's telling to me, that his entire plan was basically never to escape, it was to get his revenge. He took their still only partially brainwashed pawn, added some instructions of his own and then did everything he could to ensure that Mason would escape before they could put the finishing touches on him, before they could find what he'd done and remove it. I suspect he knew all along that a large scale escape was never going to be possible and given how the other prisoners were picked off as they tried, he wouldn't actually have been wrong about that. The whole plan shows the sheer determination Reznov had, he would sacrifice his own life and in a way it didn't matter; even years after he died, he was still a threat, still taking his revenge. When Steiner met his end, all those years later, it may have been Mason facing him, but in his final moments, he knew it was Reznov looking out at him from behind Mason's eyes.
There are files in the game that allude to reznov surviving (the computer when you break free in the main menu), but they changed their mind with black ops 2, but hey ya never know!
The saddest thing about Reznov as a character is not himself, but the losses and betrayals he suffered in the hands of his "commanders". Dimitri's death is part of his resolve too: "As long as you live, the heart of this army cannot be broken". He died in the most awful way and Reznov's heart was destroyed instead.
And Dimitri's death really was the symbolic beginning of the end for the Soviet, as immediately after, they suffer setback after setback through the Black Ops franchise until their inevitable fall 1992.
Dimitri Petrenko was a hero, he deserved a hero's death, instead of dying for the glory of the motherland he died for nothing, like an animal. He should have died in Berlin.

One thing that gets covered up by the in-game sound a lot of the time is the true depths of the sadness, and resignation to the past that is audible in Reznov's tone. Especially when he tells of Dragovich and Kravchenko's betrayal, his voice seems to waver and lower as he regrets his inability to see it coming, and how it led to Dimitri's death.
1:33 look at the pure hatred in his eyes. Listen to how much anger is in his voice when he says “But Stalin had little need for heroes.” it’s as if he’s resentment of what Stalin did to him and his men and how Stalin’s policies screwed him over.
Reznov was 100% right the west would’ve destroyed it for the sake of public image but would’ve most definitely studied it and kept a copy of formula as well as method to create nova 6 whenever they wanted too.
Neurological chemical weapons are truly horrible things, an entirely different kind of suffering compared to things like mustard gas. The world is fortunate such weapons have so rarely been used by the ruling powers, but as I write this, the Russian government is intimating they may use chemical and neurological weapons against Ukraine. I pray they do not. No one should die like that.
The west will make believe like everything is peace and butter Flies but are the most in fact lier s and foul no one should trust them or any other form or government they all have they same interest like Reznov would say
@@lightbringer34 Chemical weapons are rarely used because of reliability. Unlike a Bullet or Cruise Missile that can be directed. One sudden wind change and it misses it's target. We're thankful such weapons at least aren't as practical as they are deadly

I told my little grandson this a couple days ago. He couldn"t understand much but I knew that he knew what I have been through. Thank you again my fellow warriors.
Same thing can be applied to one real life historical event as well. Controversial figure he is and was, Fidel Castro aided Nelson Mandela in effort to end South Africa’s racist apartheid government. Their flags and ideologies were different, but their goal was still the same.
Watching Petrenko die was disturbing and saddening. I played through completely expecting I would plant the flag and then die looking over the ruined Berlin. But no he lived and I was glad either way and then, he died like an animal. Chernov died by flamethrower and had his diary read. And Reznov well he died in a train crash. A tragic end to their heroic lives...
For some reason I always get back to this. When I go to bed at night, I watch this and get a feeling of realism. I can’t really explain it but it just gets to me in a way
Steiner and Dragovich were killed by Mason in Black Ops 1. Kravenko was killed by Woods (player-determined) in Black Ops 2. Reznov’s revenge began in 1945 until 1986. Even with his death in 1963, Reznov has won.
"You must decide... Decide what you think is worth fighting for..." I'm filled with hatred for my dad, but i think dealing with him is worth fighting through to be there for my little sisters. I'm willing to fight for my family.
Hardship and suffering is really what Russia has always been about. The Tsar, the Communists and even today. Some things never change. Whether you’re good or bad, you’re effected one way or another. You could turn that suffering into strength or you could the cold hand of the lifestyle freeze you up till the flesh peals from your bones. For those on top, they usually benefit from those who go through this. Even Putin’s “popularity” with his people come into question. I think most know what happen if anyone save those outside the country would dare question them, not just their lives... But their families. If anything, Russia has always been brutal and the people know it all too well. Whether you embrace it, do your best to survive it or be destroyed. Truly among the harshest places on Earth and it’s people know it. On hand it’s a place where you take pride in being a survivor or fear what it will do it if you’re. That is what the Russian people have come to accept. Will there be a better life in that country someday...... Or it is nature for them to live through the brutality of their environment, both the natural climate and the social one. I don’t know if they know it either. Still, it is what they do.
I still get emotional at this part in BO1. To know that reznov gets betrayed after all he’s done… and when he’s sitting in vorkuta telling mason the story with such a desperate urgency
This cutscene will make you feel like you’re a kid, sitting down in front of a campfire when someone tells a story. We will never have another COD campaign like this. It makes me glad I was there to experience this in its prime.
Comrade Viktor Reznov has become a legend in war games. Gary Oldman gave him a soul, so he's almost real. Does anyone remember a medal of honor character? veeery unlikely. (but I really enjoyed PS2's MOH...specially European Assault hehehe)

Yea same, I haven't even learned that much english by the time I played cod games to fully understand some deep conversations and unraveling, it's nice to eventually realize how much effort in game developing AND voice acting they were actually putting in these OG Call Of Duty games
The old games just really makes you feel so many emotions and maybe it’s because these were somewhat based on real life events I put down my controllers long time ago, but this character and the old call of duty just resonates better
Black Ops had peak storytelling for the entire COD franchise. The characters and the direction the story takes stays with you. Doesn’t feel like cookie-cutter warfare that we get from COD today
Its weird Ive never touched a single WaW game in my life but Reznov was one my favorite characters if not my favorite character. There's just so much passion in the Vorkuta escape that makes it truly my favorite mission. (number 2 favorite is the mission where you get a Spazz 12 and just incenerate and dismember everyone) and here he's just so haunting. I was hanging on every word during this mission
It pisses me off to no end when people now say “CoD doesn’t need a campaign.” These campaigns were amazing masterpieces

I hope so but the next game Treyarch will make will most likely be in the present or the future, so he will either be extremely old or dead.
xAcrylicx He died in black ops
You don't know that for sure, did you see the guard killing him? No, so he may well of survived.
He died you tard they say it in the game and if he did survive hes dead now because e was like 60 in black ops 1
WHICH IS WHAT I SAID. They don't know for sure he died in Vorkuta because the C.I.A weren't even fucking there. As if KGB gulag guards will tell the C.I.A who they just fucking murdered you arrogant piece of shit.
Black ops man... One of the best written Call of Duty games ever.
*"The flags may be different but the methods are the same."* - Viktor Reznov
U.s.a
1:33 look at the pure hatred in his eyes. Listen to how much anger is in his voice when he says “But Stalin had little need for heroes.” it’s as if he’s resentment of what Stalin did to him and his men and how Stalin’s policies screwed him over.
I don't think Reznov respected Stalin any more than he respected Hitler.
TraustiGeir ‘War is when the Young and Stupid are tricked by the Old and the bitter into killing each other ‘ - Niko Bellic
Reznovs beef wasn't really with Stalin it was more with dragovich and kravchenko
Fun fact: The US pardoned Japan for their warcrimes on Unit 731 as they were given all of the findings and research obtained experimenting with humans
The realization Reznov was all in masons mind was one of the best no way moments like in fight club but what always hit me next was that means Reznov is actually dead which always made me sad cuz he was my favorite COD character next to Price especially for his pure hatred of Nazis
You must Decide! Decide what you think is worth fighting for!
God for 2010 the graphics look absolutely stellar.
The benefits of being a big studio with a big budget
I told my little grandson this a couple days ago. He couldn"t understand much but I knew that he knew what I have been through. Thank you again my fellow warriors.

The flags may be different but the methods are the same...
Damn, after playing Cold War that statement stays true
@Angus Right now, no.
@Angus i hate buying this digitally day 1
Same thing can be applied to one real life historical event as well. Controversial figure he is and was, Fidel Castro aided Nelson Mandela in effort to end South Africa’s racist apartheid government. Their flags and ideologies were different, but their goal was still the same.

Viktor Reznov will always be one of my favorite cod characters
1:11 Viktor Reznov leaks Spiderman title 9 years before the movie come out
These cutscenes age like wine
This is Gary Oldman!
Ironic that this is my recommend considering the world events right now.
For some reason I always get back to this. When I go to bed at night, I watch this and get a feeling of realism. I can’t really explain it but it just gets to me in a way
Love how this is suddenly in my recommended
What a coincidence 😂
I literally close my eyes and put headphones on me and listen to this everytime it never gets any less satisfying
“You must decide...decide what you think is worth fighting for”
Gary oldman hard carries this character. God he's so good
Steiner and Dragovich were killed by Mason in Black Ops 1.
Kravenko was killed by Woods (player-determined) in Black Ops 2.
Reznov’s revenge began in 1945 until 1986. Even with his death in 1963, Reznov has won.
These figures like Reznov, Mason, Woods and Hudson, will never be forget.
"You must decide... Decide what you think is worth fighting for..."
I'm filled with hatred for my dad, but i think dealing with him is worth fighting through to be there for my little sisters. I'm willing to fight for my family.
You are a good man
Have you fought and won?
This bone-chilling performance made this game legendary....
Why do Russians in this series get the most dramatic and heart-changing backstories and flashbacks.
Have you met a Russian?
There is a reason for that.
"You must decide... Decide what you think is worth fighting for"
This cutscene will make you feel like you’re a kid, sitting down in front of a campfire when someone tells a story. We will never have another COD campaign like this. It makes me glad I was there to experience this in its prime.

"The flag may be different, but the methods are the same." -Reznov. Sound wisdom...

a remake of this masterpiece is just enough to make me cry
I get to do this as a monologue in drama...for petrenko. And, for reznov.
"What is left to believe in, when all that you´re all that you´ve done is buried beneath the lies ant sins of corrupt men?"
Comrade Viktor Reznov has become a legend in war games. Gary Oldman gave him a soul, so he's almost real. Does anyone remember a medal of honor character? veeery unlikely. (but I really enjoyed PS2's MOH...specially European Assault hehehe)
Rising sun hehe
i remember manon batiste, and jimmy paterson, and rabbit
I actually remember Manon Batiste and Major Jack Grillo.
But they certainly did not have the same enduring charisma and memorability as Viktor Reznov.
One of the most memorable scenes of video game history.
“This was a betrayal I should have foreseen “ I’ve never played a recent cod game that matched that line
5:27
I like how he tried to call them something like "monsters" or "scum" but he realized they are not even worthy of being creatively insulted so he just says 'men'
I view it almost as the opposite. That referring to them as a fellow men disgusts him
crazy how all this lowkey ties into zombies and that whole storyline
Bro, just the way Reznov's animated.. you can really feel the pain behind his words
Specially 3:30
"the flag may be different, but the methods are the same"
Couldn't be more true right now. But everyone is being lied to.

It’s funny cause a kid, I never realize the depth of these older CODs. It’s nice to be able to come back and appreciate the writing and atmosphere as an adult
Yea same, I haven't even learned that much english by the time I played cod games to fully understand some deep conversations and unraveling, it's nice to eventually realize how much effort in game developing AND voice acting they were actually putting in these OG Call Of Duty games
"The flag might be different, but the methods are the same". That line has stayed with me since hearing it.
Hard to believe such an A-list actor voices a beloved Call-Of-Duty Character
The old games just really makes you feel so many emotions and maybe it’s because these were somewhat based on real life events I put down my controllers long time ago, but this character and the old call of duty just resonates better
Man, revisiting old Cods really just hits different once you're long past teenage years and shit.
Agreed.
And they said Call of Duty didn't have iconic characters...
"But Stalin had little need for heroes," is definitely an underrated line
you can feel the venom when reznov says "These MEN" honestly made me flinch.
I finished Black Ops ten years ago. And Reznov is an unforgettable Video Game Character.
"the flag may be different, but the methods are the same" man i freaking love that quote.

Noel Clements how?
i am an idiot having one of the main protagenists from Waw (Dimitri) killed, soo many hours of Gaming...
Black Ops had peak storytelling for the entire COD franchise. The characters and the direction the story takes stays with you. Doesn’t feel like cookie-cutter warfare that we get from COD today
Gary Oldman, man. He's just incredible.
5:27 the sheer hatred in his voice when he says those words makes you want to kill them too.
Indeed great voice acting 🔥🔥

Its weird Ive never touched a single WaW game in my life but Reznov was one my favorite characters if not my favorite character. There's just so much passion in the Vorkuta escape that makes it truly my favorite mission. (number 2 favorite is the mission where you get a Spazz 12 and just incenerate and dismember everyone) and here he's just so haunting. I was hanging on every word during this mission
