  • In today's video I decided to share with you how I set up my discoid roach colony for my bearded dragon. Discoid roaches are very similar to dubia roaches so hopefully I can reproduce them to be able to give them to my bearded dragons

    Fantastic! I have been looking into starting a colony but they seem so expensive. How many did you start with? Looking forward to more videos on them!

      there are two good options with both having their pros and cons. Here's a summary:
      1. Getting a group of nymphs (babies), growing them out and breeding them to get babies
      Pros: Are cheaper, you can guarantee maximum breeding potential
      Cons: They take an average of 4-5 months to fully grow out, and you can't control the ratio of males to females
      2. Buying adults at a ratio of 4 females to 1 male
      Pros: You get adults instantly, meaning you don't have to wait for nymphs to grow up, and you can fully control how many males and females you're getting
      Cons: Are typically 2-3 times as expensive as the nymphs, and you don't know the breeding potential of the adults (they might be so old that they can only breed 1 or 2 more times until they die, compared to the 8 or 9 times of a nymph)
      I got 15 discoid roaches from Canada Ant Colony, but there are new sellers popping up left and right. There are three other sellers I'm currently aware of: Formistudio, Ontario Invert Farm, and Arthropods Canada. Formistudio has the cheapest roaches and Ontario Invert Farm has the most expensive. If you're not in a rush it might be smart to wait a couple more years, as the price is going down really quickly. Good luck!

    Yo, awesome, thank you! I've been looking into getting a bearded dragon and I'm so glad some sort of roach is allowed in place of dubias. I do not wanna go with crickets if I don't have to.

    Discoid roaches cannot fly. Anyhow, I suggest against using a substrate for obvious reasons in this video, especially what you ended up using. If you need a substrate, I would go with fine coco coir. You can run it through a sifter and pull the babies out vs potentially crushing them moving through the substrate like you have in the video. I personally allow my roach frass to be my substrate. The babies eat it for gut health among other things. You should definitely take a look at my breeding guides for discoid roaches. I have covered them extensively on my channel.

    Can you tell male or female? No water source?

    • @lemonlizard1
      @lemonlizard1 Год назад

      they will drown in a water bowl so you need to either feed watery veggies like romaine lettuce, cucumber or zucchini OR you can use a damp paper towel. You will need to change out the paper towel once every few days

      and by the way, yes you can tell the difference from a male and female - but only when they're adults, and it can be a bit difficult
