    Nothing wrong with defense contracting. The issue with weapons designers is when they'll do anything to sell their stuff. For those who don't know, major firms have tried to give the US government the slip and overcharge or bribe third world officials to secure contracts they're more than capable of competing for fairly. That's when the defense industry becomes very, very shady.

    • @leftcoaster67
      @leftcoaster67 6 лет назад +4

      When the defence industry is no longer focused on defence, or giving advantage to troops, or saving the lives of troops. Now its just about making money. The defence industry needs a new Truman Commission. The Pentagon needs to focus on what the US want's it's military to do, and a reasonable budget to do it in.

    This has been my favorite series from your channel so far, really enjoyed them all and this one's no exception. I have a suggestion tho, I'd love to see how big is Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi group and its subsidiaries seem to make everything that can possibly be made, and they have a really long history as well.

    GE is known to have supressed many technologies. For example they did not release the technology to build CFL lights and tubelights until it was profitable to do so. There are some who claim that we are still being trickle-fed from large companies today, and the reason why smaller start-ups seem to be coming out with new tech is because all the larger companies trickle-feed the technologies.

    • @yomelbourne
      @yomelbourne 8 лет назад +4

      +ColdFusion That was mostly because of the new banking regulations came out after GFC. It wasn't viable for GE to continue into capital business with regulators requiring very high percentage of capital to be reserved for the rainy day. There is more to that but that regulation pretty much forced GE to sell it capital business coz its capital business had the potential to make to it bankrupt in the event of another GFC.

    GE currently has a stranglehold on EMD in locomotive manufacturing. They've already started to manufacture their Tier 4 (GEVO) diesel locomotive the ET44AC and almost all of North America's Class I Railroads have purchased them. I've never been a huge fan of GE but I'll admit it, they really have put out a superior quality product.
    EMD has come up with a Tier 4 locomotive, the SD70ACe-T4 but GE is already a few years of locomotive manufacturing ahead of EMD. It looks like the GE plants in Fort Worth Texas and Erie Pennsylvania are going to be busy for a while.
    EMD's Tier 4 locomotive better surpass expectations if they expect to make a comeback.

      It's not a coincidence that GE stopped supporting the construction of nuclear weapons right after the cold war ended. The boycott may have stung but it was likely minimal to the profits they made from government contracts.

    You should do other military industrial complex countries, like Lockheed, Boeing, Rockwell Collins, or United Technologies (parent to Pratt&Whitney). It might just be me, but it seems that those are the defense businesses other than GE that stand a good chance of having some interesting and dark facts.

    Actually JP Morgan is the one who merged the companies. Also, JP Morgan was the one who told Edison to do anything to destroy Tesla. If you don't believe me go watch the show "The Men Who Built America" the show on History channel, please watch that and re-check those facts. Also, JP Morgan owned all stock in GE. He bought Edison out, then thats when he merged the companies and made GE.

    Now that we are in the 2020s decade, it does appear that GE is getting smaller, and here's a breakdown. The shrinking of GE in the 1980's included the boycott of GE (because of their nuclear weapons shenanigans), the HVAC division being sold to the Trane Company, and their small appliance division to Black & Decker. But in the last 1 to 20 years, GE sold their small motor division to Regal-Benoit in 2004, large motors division to Wolong in 2018, large appliances to Haier in 2016, plastics to SABIC in 2007, and their Oil & Gas operations to Baker-Hughes in 2018. More recently, GE sold their train and transportation systems to Wabtec in 2019, both their consumer-residential lighting division to Savant Systems and their commercial-industrial lighting to the Daintree Group (both in 2020). On top of that, GE was actually booted off the stock market in 2018, and now that they are only in the financial business, aviation systems, and healthcare equipment markets, they are now just a small shell of their former corporate dominance.

    9:29 Whether or not GE was involved with the entertainment industry, it would have been impossible to report accurately on the Gulf War without commenting on the effectiveness of the new generation of precision attack munitions.

    I think my favourite part of watching Coldfussion is the female voice in the intro and finally followed by gogo's voice. That combination gets me nice and tucked in ready to absorb the mass of information provided by the videos

    There used to be both a GE and an RCA manufacturing plants in my neighboring town making fridges and televisions. As those jobs were outsourced to other countries for cheap labor and even cheaper parts, those plants eventually closed. Sad that these companies that started in America do much of their manufacturing elsewhere now to make a few extra bucks.
