Not the episode I expected... I forgot about the DLC lol. There is more about Ellie even before this episode, there is a comic which explains how Ellie came to be at the FEDRA school/orphanage and how she met Riley. This episode is set 3 weeks before Ellie met Joel. Ellie didn't turn... but Riley did. So it's safe to assume that Ellie had to kill her. This is what she meant when she told Joel, 'this wasn't my first time.' Very sad ending to the DLC. Now NEXT week for sure, you are going to need your tissues AND your blankie. :D Dawwwwwww Tori, you sweet summer child lol.
@@popculturallychallenged It had just been shut down as they were tearing it down to build something different. It is only a single floor mall. The sequence showing two levels was CGI.
18:26 You are going to have to fill in the rest of the back story. Ellie told Joel in episode 5 that it was not the first time she shot someone with a gun and when Joel asked about it later she said she did not want to go into it.
It's kinda obvious what have happened after - Marlene and Fireflies showed up for Riley to take her to Atlanta QZ, buut they found Riley turned or dead and Ellie instead.
Hey Toni & David, hope you guys are well and blessed. This episode was pretty mellow...no tears, yay! At least we know how Ellie gets bitten, and I think Joel and Ellie will become tighter now, and even perhaps he'll share about his daughter to her. Looking forward to the next one. Until next time guys, take care!
@Pop Culturally Challenged, 14:26 I would be very surprised if this back story is revisited--we've been told enough to piece the story together. Riley told Ellie that she's been shipped out to the Atlanta QZ in the morning--they left Ellie's room just after 2am. Ellie's also wearing the same clothes we see her wearing in episode one. We know from Ellie's story in episode one that Marlene kept her in that room in their Firefly safehouse for three weeks. When Joel tried to console Ellie for playing a part in Bryan's death in Kansas, she tells Joel that that wasn't the first time she had killed someone. That someone was Riley ='( The full cordyceps infection timetable in episode one--found on the poster of the QZ hospital--told us that bites on the arm and hand take 2 to 8 hours. We already know from the epidemiologist in the cold open of the first episode that Cordyceps wall of the brain of the host and hijack the body. Bites closer to the brain won't take a person very long to turn. Ellie's bite was on her forearm, while Riley's was on her hand. If Ellie weren't immune, she would have shown symptoms before Riley, but we know she didn't. Ellie and Riley already chose to wait things out, but at some point, I think Riley begged Ellie to kill her. They both knew what was going to happen and Riley didn't want to be the one to kill Ellie, and as hard as it was for Ellie to do what she had to do, she did it. I think she killed Riley before she turned because doing so after would have been a struggle and there was no guarantee that she would have been able to fight her off, especially in the mental state that she was in. I think Ellie killed Riley with her knife, and that would explain why her knife is so precious to her. In this flashback, her life meant little to her, but in the present it is very dear to her. Why is that? I think it's because it's the last thing that connects her to Riley. This would also explain why Ellie approached and killed the Stalker in episode three in the basement. She was doing it for Riley. This episode was amazing. It's based on the DLC that came out after the first game's release and they did a great job with it. I like how they made it part of the greater story, using what Riley told her about family, and Ellie making a choice to save her family, Joel. Ellie couldn't save Riley or Sam, but while things were very bad for Joel, there was still a chance to save him, so long as Ellie didn't leave him. Everyone that was in Ellie's life had left her or died and when the time came for her to make a choice, she chose to stay and protect her family the best way she knew how. The next two stories should be wild. I cannot wait to see how HBO pulls it off, but I do not doubt this team's ability to do it. They've done an amazing job up to this point, and I'm confident that they'll stick the landing. Nice reaction =)
Thank you for all the insight, it helps understand it it more. I’ve surprisingly enjoyed it very much even thought the first couple of episodes gave me anxiety and put me in a different place. - Toni
Ellie's resolve at the end of this episode was super inspiring, especially with the music. She's not going to fail this time. She's gonna help.
Ellie is incredible! 😃
Toni's too.
13:10 david struggling with the stitching 😆
David can’t stand the sight of needles and I was super surprised he looked. lol - Toni
You guys are such a wholesome couple. I love seeing an older generation reaction compared to all the younger kids on youtube. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
I died laughing at “you think she had a good life”
😂

I’ll be ready! So excited to watch it but a bit nervous. -Toni
My high school (30 years back for me) is across the street from that mall.
That's cool! Is it an abandoned mall now or did they just shut it down for shooting?

This story line was part of the DLC. It was not in the original game
