Pretty sure that's Vanina Walsh. 18 years old. She's a professional surfer, model, and owns her own a clothing line. Speaks several languages. I can't do any of that, but this morning I balanced a cheeto on my nose.
I love the smile and little giggle she had when she started the engine. Yep she did good with the go around. Touching down right at stall warning. She was trained well. Great job Pilot!
After 18 hours I finally took off solo and I was a freakin nervous wreck. Man, that's amazing, and I heard the stall warning go off at takeoff and another time during the flight when she was banking to the right. I little high on the approach but all-in-all, outstanding. People don't realize that it takes nerves of steel a bit over-sized cojones to go up the first time. This little girl is like nothing to it. It just blows my mind on the number of videos with young ladies in their teens soloing and flying like they've been doing it all their life.
It takes a lot of guts to keep going when the flight instructor gets out of the plane and says "OK like we have practiced, stay in the pattern- 3 touch and go's and back to the hanger". Even more when the tower says "your clear for take off" and you fingers touch the throttle... your out of wiggle room and the little voice says go for it. 50 feet off the ground and a tingle hits you in the gut. I did it! I'm on own and no one can help me land this sucker.. and I love it. Few things you will ever do can even come close to equiling this feeling of euphoria. Freedom. 😎

Awesome work Vanina! I admire your attention to following procedure and calling out the steps even though you were the only one in the cockpit. That is how errors are prevented and consistency is assured!
Thank you for producing this video - it brings back great memories. I flew my first solo at KCHD back in 1982 in a C-150! My CFI shot my solo flight with a Super -8 movie camera from the ground. Nothing like the GoPro video tech of today but still a cherished record of that special moment in every pilot's life. To the pilot in this video, great judgment deciding on the go-around on first approach. Your landings were smoother than mine - I had a slight bounce on my second landing. Well done and congratulations!
Only thing I would add that I haven't seen in the comments - She scans to the right constantly, but that's expected because she is in a right pattern thus the airport is on her right. But you have to look left now and then, because you never know what selfish, self-centered dimbulb is coming in for a long straight in landing. This behavior is more common at non-towered airports but looking all around is still a good habit to get into.
Great decision to go around on that first one. She showed great judgement (which is one of the most important qualities a pilot needs to have). Well done!
Airmanship was awesome but more impressive is the radio communication. Calm, cool and collected. Nice job V you made it look a lot easier than the first solo is.
LOL...I started watching this, then I realized that it's the same plane I'm learning on! Go 65453 at KCHD!! I have a piece of white foam I keep in the back to sit on (I'm short). Congrats on her solo!
Back in 1987 I rented a hanger at Chandler long before it went to a controlled airfield. I had a 1964 Cessna 150-D , N4243U , white blue and grey, Had my annual inspection at Chandler air service . They always had great service and great instructors ! I now live in Vermont where it gets real cold LOL ! Belated Congrats to Vanina !! You probably got your ATP by now.
Congrats! Very cool to watch. I'm a truck driver who always wanted to get my pilot's license, and been watching as many videos as I can find to get a better feel for procedures. Very inspirational thank you! Congrats again!
I remember on one of my early solos, 20+ years ago, the flaps wouldn't retract after takeoff. Thanks to my instructor, I'd been practiced up on slow flight, and landed safely.
Wow, I was watching through the 9th minute not paying much attention to the airport and was about to close the video when I recognized the airport: Chandler Municipal Airport! This is where I soloed in 1998. I did my two touch and goes on 22L and my full stop landing on 22R. She did all her work on 22R.
Nice going girl! Did my first solo few months ago. I wish I was calm as you were. I was nervous as hell. The airport I was at was busy so there was a lot of traffic. I had constantly had to talk to myself to stay focus.
Looked like a great solo to me. Student was calm, confident, studious of checklist , radio communication sounded good, I didn't see any mistakes, but I have been away from this a long time. Nice job. This gal could someday be a commercial pilot....
Even now the memories come back. Some things fade with time, but not your first solo. Watching this, I can even smell the avgas from my first run without the right-seater. Eventually became the right-seater myself after time.
Your instructor doesn't allow you to solo unless they're very confident you'll do fine. Usually they they mention you might be soloing on your solo day or close to it. Mine did. We went up together the plan was just to do touch in goes. After the third one he called up to the tower and said this one will be to a full stop... he told me to park by the FBO, not the tie down area. I thought the entire time, he needed to use the restroom. I said, oh the temporary parking area, and he just said yep. We got there, and I was about to begin engine shut down procedures, he said oh no keep it running. And he proceeded to get out of the airplane. I then realized what was going on. I couldn't stop grinning the entire time. The long taxi to the end of the about 10,000 foot runway glancing at the empty right seat, I giggled to myself, how do I get myself into these messes. Oh well, I'll be okay. Taking off and turning crosswind seeing my city below me with only about 14 hours under my belt, felt so surreal thing, like a dream both I can't believe they're letting me do this, and this is so awesome I'm doing it. In most cases it happens fairly early in training (10 to 16 log hours)... unless you're having serious learning curve problems. Either way, I think every pilot remembers their first solo. The magic doesn't vanish though, flying people who either never have flown or flown in a small plane before brings that magic back. I don't think I would want my solo recorded though... it would need to be edited... I was thinking out loud including checklist: "Whoops, didn't mean to do that... hmmm wonder if I'll survive... how do I get myself in these messes? I can't believe they're letting me do this... there's the interstate, good thing they're oblivious they got a newbie flying over them... look at the tower... oh head for the numbers... okay, looks like I'm dive bombing the tower... oh now you want me to extend my downwind and follow number 2 behind that airplane... must have scared the tower... hope I don't forget anything... anything critical anyway... that'd be bad... I hope they don't have some audio recording device in here, they'll never let me fly again..." and of course lots of hooping and hollering having the time of my life.
Impressive..!! I love to see young girls executing complex tasks like first solo flying better than big boys She is rock solid... Awesome video thanks for sharing.
0:28 - Technically that would be three (3) landings. In my case, I bounced several times, so I counted them all... Great job on your first PIC supervised solo!!! Awesome decision at 14:15. Beautiful landings. Continued success.
Hypnotherapy conversations with Paul Garth, C.Ht. Lol. I hated WINDY DAYS. Damn it was tuff. About to flare and gust wind comes in then your 10’ high if you don’t add power you go squat I had couple those. But these Cessna are built tuff. I swore I pancaked the bottom several times. Course we never told anyone. Like the old saying goes. Any landing you can walk away from is a good one
Low key if I did that go-around this late my instructor would tear me to shread, you need to decide wether or not you have right angle of approach, are stablized and well centered by 200 feet above the runway (for very light aircraft) which is was very obviously not the case here she was too high and not centered, waiting till you're 50 feet above ground and more than half the runway through is a big mistake. Maybe in the US instruction is different or maybe my Instructor is a big pain in the ass which is likely the case.
I’m not a pilot, know little about flying, but came across this video and ‘rode along’ I don’t even know you but am so proud of you for your first solo flight!! Congrats to you, kid !!
I'm so nervous for the test on August 12 is my flight lesson very first time I am nervous because not only learning how to fly in the video you have to fill out test about how the plane test and everything works perfectly and you have to always communicate with the Flight tower and I'm extremely excited I hope I don't mess up everyone wish me good luck
Yes, well done, never forget my first solo, on finals 27 didn't realise the wind changed, instructor "pretty neat first crosswind landing and all" I had no idea, just fluked it!!
Props to her! She did fantastic! I flew one of these small planes once with a professional pilot of course and I didn’t like the play in the steering lol. It can be hard to line it up. It was just for fun and I enjoyed it! Great job girl!
Don’t consider it,..do it,...if you do your ground school first, and just practice on how to talk to A/C,...oh man ,...things will so much smoother and confident when actually start flying. Good luck to you
Man, I miss flying. I went solo pre 9/11 and was building solo time when fuel was cheap, but ran out of money when everything got expensive after 9/11. Hopefully one day I can pick it back up where I left off. It has been one of my biggest regrets not finishing my license. What a great video! Brings back some cherished memories!
So nice. This is Vanina Walsh….now a commercial pilot and professional surfer. Her dad is a commercial pilot also. She did so good here, so observant. I would fly with her anytime. She is a cutie. So good to see young females getting their pilots license. Thanks for sharing
Your student do very well for first flight, The hardest lesson for me was to not try the fix things when they go wrong, but to get safe and start again. well done Vanina indeed, no doubt a great instructor as well.
Beautiful work young lady. I've been around aviation in one or another all my life and am trying to get back into fight school. You are an inspiration to all young aspiring pilots. KEEP UP THE HARD, AND CONGRATULATIONS.
Mine He caught me off guard we landed Taxi back to hanger. He said keep it running. I had a funny look. He goes. Ok. I want 1 touch n go and final. I damn near died. He shut the door and it was just me. This was 1988. I didn’t have time to think I just taxi back to the active. This was Kansas so it was pretty much me. It was one of the best LANDINGS I performed both of them. Think getting me off guard I didn’t have time to really think about it
@@wakeuppeople7327 Same here. We taxied to the ramp and my instructor called tower and said, “I’m sending one up by himself.”, then said, “Okay, do three laps.” Then, I am told, he went inside the FBO and watched TV. I wish we had GoPros back then-it’d be great to have a record of that day.
This is from 5 months ago, so she's probably got her certificate by now, but she needs to make the go-around decision a little sooner. She was high on the first approach and tried to dive it down to about 50 feet it looked like. When she realized that she was passing the 1000 footers, she decided (correctly) to go around. Also, did she call the tower and announce the go-around?
Yes, I was hoping that call to the tower was somehow missed or edited out in the video footage. Otherwise, that needs to be emphasized. Among other things, a clearance for touch-and-go is not a clearance for a low approach. Going around definitely required a timely advisory to the tower.
This young lady now has a multiengine commercial licence and she is IFR rated... only thing better than that is an ATP licence... Look up Vanina Walsh on Instagram... she has beauty AND brains...
First solo - nothing wrong with when she decided to go around. That is how you learn. Also, she was cleared for a touch and go so technically no need to call the go around. If she was doing a full stop, then yes she should have.
As a former CFII; I was impressed by her continuous monitoring what might be in view outside the plane. Its good to see someone who remembers to always "maintain their head on a swivel."
Overall good job. Very smart call on the go around. However, some details were missed and details count. For instance when she yelled clear before engine start there was a full twenty seconds before she started the engine. Clear should be the last thing you do before starting the engine. Twenty seconds seems like a little time, but in that time someone near her plane could have gotten in her prop space and never heard her call clear, especially on a more windy day. More details: On initial call up she never said where she was or that she had the ATIS. She should be taught to be more direct on the radio. She should avoid saying, "Tower can I get . . . .? She should DECLARE what she would like to do. Her radio work should be better at the solo point in her training. She'd have a hard time in a busy airport. After she was cleared and was acknowledging her clearance she never gave her tail number to verify who was taking the runway. I realize it's not the tower's job to correct her and she is a student pilot, however there are towers who would have come back to her and held her accountable for those omissions. On her initial contact to the tower she never said she was No.1 for takeoff and that she was ready to go. Both landings were way to low on approach. Way too many instructors teach students to aim for the numbers. On her second approach it looked like she would scrape her wheels on those building roofs. Had she lost an engine, she'd never have made the runway. When you have lots of runway as she had, she should be picking a landing spot 500 feet past the numbers which on approach give you much more of a glide cushion. She made it back alive. However, details matter going forward. Her instructor should really work her harder on those details.
I remember my first solo. I was nervous right up until I was lined up and throttled up, then nothing but Bliss and good times! Keep at it, have fun and most importantly be safe! I start my AMEL training tomorrow, really excited for it!
Lol, you're about as quiet as a mouse. You gotta learn to HOLLER, "CLEAR!!!" Other than that, great job!!! It never hurts to verbalize your V-speeds and actions, and if you go on to fly professionally, it's the norm. And keep your head on a swivel. There are others out there. Very important to remain visually clear, constantly. :) Again, great job!
Congratulations! You accomplished something Ihve been dreaming to do all my life. Unfortunately i allowed time to pass without following my dream. I wish you continued success and safe flights.

I took a crash helmet on my solo...luckily I didn't have to use it! Good job young lady!!!
LOL...I started watching this, then I realized that it's the same plane I'm learning on! Go 65453 at KCHD!! I have a piece of white foam I keep in the back to sit on (I'm short). Congrats on her solo!
I knew the area looked familiar. I used to fly out of KDVT with my uncle every weekend in a C172 as well.
Great job. I remember my first solo flight I waved my arms around in the plane because I was excited to be alone in the sky. Amazing feeling.
Seeing you flying I was also imagining my 18 years old daughter on her first solo. Your sweat video brought tears to my eyes. Congratulations
Congratulation Young Lady, good cool decision making. You will become a very good pilot. And well done to your instructor, he did good
saw her going around, and wanted to jump up and cheer! Great call.
Wow... Vanina did a great job!!!! I bet she's a great pilot 3 years later. What a great memory for her to have this video.
When i watched this i thought, wow shes super sweet, then I thought she must have a top notch instructor, and it clearly shows. Awesome.
You will never forget your first solo. CONGRATS !!!!
Congrats hunny! I did my solo on a cloudy day also! And the damn tower changed runways on me :) All of us pilots are proud of you!
This young lady is stunning. Its so cool that she has her license. Congrats
She makes it look so easy. Well done, Vanina.
Nice going girl! Did my first solo few months ago. I wish I was calm as you were. I was nervous as hell. The airport I was at was busy so there was a lot of traffic. I had constantly had to talk to myself to stay focus.
Great Job, Vanina! I remember my first solo 39 years ago like it was yesterday :-))
Girl, this was a great job. The first landing was a little rough, but the second one was perfect.
Looked like a great solo to me. Student was calm, confident, studious of checklist , radio communication sounded good, I didn't see any mistakes, but I have been away from this a long time. Nice job. This gal could someday be a commercial pilot....
Nice, yeah i saw you going long and you made the right call going around. Good job.
The first landing was a T&G. A little off center-line on final, but she greased it onto the pavement. Really nice job.
The way she smiled when it started. Made me say that i might feel that too once i stepped up in that plane.
Very nice job! Go around for first landing, perfecto. Using good judgment. Congrats to her and her CFI.
Even now the memories come back. Some things fade with time, but not your first solo. Watching this, I can even smell the avgas from my first run without the right-seater. Eventually became the right-seater myself after time.
I Would Probably Crash Into a Water Tower and Drown 50 feet in the Air .
@@stt.9433 That’s exactly what I thought when watching this. The go-around decision was a bit late, but at least she didn’t try to land.
I’m not a pilot, know little about flying, but came across this video and ‘rode along’
I don’t even know you but am so proud of you for your first solo flight!! Congrats to you, kid !!
I'm so nervous for the test on August 12 is my flight lesson very first time I am nervous because not only learning how to fly in the video you have to fill out test about how the plane test and everything works perfectly and you have to always communicate with the Flight tower and I'm extremely excited I hope I don't mess up everyone wish me good luck
how did it go!
I enjoyed that solo flight. Very nicely done. Love her confidence while flying.
This is literally my dream 🥺 I wish i could afford the education
Yes, well done, never forget my first solo, on finals 27 didn't realise the wind changed, instructor "pretty neat first crosswind landing and all" I had no idea, just fluked it!!
We don't know each other, but i'm proud of ya! :)
Props to her! She did fantastic! I flew one of these small planes once with a professional pilot of course and I didn’t like the play in the steering lol. It can be hard to line it up. It was just for fun and I enjoyed it! Great job girl!
Who else is watching this during Quarantine!!
I am because I'm strongly considering becoming a private pilot
Me too.
Don’t consider it,..do it,...if you do your ground school first, and just practice on how to talk to A/C,...oh man ,...things will so much smoother and confident when actually start flying. Good luck to you
@@gregbrock3274 Why don't you think so
I'm watching this video , she was a good pilot for the future.. She follow the command from the tower.
Man, I miss flying. I went solo pre 9/11 and was building solo time when fuel was cheap, but ran out of money when everything got expensive after 9/11. Hopefully one day I can pick it back up where I left off. It has been one of my biggest regrets not finishing my license. What a great video! Brings back some cherished memories!
can't wait to start my training :D this must be so much fun!!
Very nice flying and excellent communication with ATC.This pilot will go places
When you get the audio fixed can you re-upload? Very educational for my daughter who's training.
Nicely done Vanina! You certainly got presented with some common elements of busier airport traffic patterns and handled them all quite well.
Awesome first solo! Congratulations, very impressive.
Congratulations Vanina...looks like you enjoyed yourself too. ..😊😊😊 👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
Well done - congrats on your solo!
So nice. This is Vanina Walsh….now a commercial pilot and professional surfer. Her dad is a commercial pilot also. She did so good here, so observant. I would fly with her anytime. She is a cutie. So good to see young females getting their pilots license. Thanks for sharing
We need more women Pilots ! Great to see ! Great achievement Vanina !
* Firefox Why do we need more female pilots?
@@matts3729 Good question.. we need good pilots. Thats all.
Your student do very well for first flight, The hardest lesson for me was to not try the fix things when they go wrong, but to get safe and start again. well done Vanina indeed, no doubt a great instructor as well.
The pillows are kind of cute though 🙋
Beautiful work young lady. I've been around aviation in one or another all my life and am trying to get back into fight school. You are an inspiration to all young aspiring pilots. KEEP UP THE HARD, AND CONGRATULATIONS.
Nice job! And good decision on the first landing attempt. Plane sure performs better when there's no instructor on board doesn't it? ;)
That controller reading the atis report was about as exciting as paint drying.
great job! my heart was pounding...
I'm not sure why but this video just thrilled me. I was so happy for her.
Good Job. first solo="I've never felt so alone in my life" lol
scubaemt25 never even thought about my 1st solo as stressful
Congratulations Vanina. You have achieved what I am aiming for. You had a great instructor. Well Done.
@@Gilles45 She'll be the next Global Girl, keeping this pace!
First solo - nothing wrong with when she decided to go around. That is how you learn. Also, she was cleared for a touch and go so technically no need to call the go around. If she was doing a full stop, then yes she should have.
I gave my son flying lessons for 16th birthday. Self confidence went sky high after is solo.
Im coming back here after one two years as pilot
How is it going?
Very Very Well Done from Australia.. Longs you learn from mistakes you make a very wonderful pilot. But well done from Australia...David
What make of plane is she flying, it seems to very stable and smooth
Cessna 172
Its not the plane thats smooth its her
Danm that was smooth
As a former CFII; I was impressed by her continuous monitoring what might be in view outside the plane. Its good to see someone who remembers to always "maintain their head on a swivel."
The ATIS was so enthusiastic
LOL
o0prince They always are.
Yeah, Automated Terminal Information Services are often full of emotion. Next step: Skynet.
Gr8 work ...God bless yOu 4 ur future decisions..!!
:) Again, great job!
its a self clearing prop
All props are self clearing!😄
She is great, I wish her all the best, she can be a great pilot in the future.
Not a fan of the checklist and charts on the yoke. The Cessna yoke isn't designed for that. A kneeboard would've been better.
Concur! Kneeboard FTW!

These days you even see more and more iPads on there ...
Congratulations! You accomplished something Ihve been dreaming to do all my life. Unfortunately i allowed time to pass without following my dream. I wish you continued success and safe flights.
