I came on board just to see what type of glue you used for your repairs and ended up watching the whole video. I learned how to do the repairs, and how to fill the gaps and cracks, plus. I subscribed. you do beautiful work.
I just came home with six Capodimonte pieces with small missing areas. I've repaired these things before, but doing a job from an artist's point of view. I know there are better ways and I found you trying to find them! Thanks for the information! I guess it's time to see if my 50 year old airbrush still works!
Another super repair job. Haven't seen you use that matte restoration glaze before--very informative. Also not familiar with Kaiser porcelain, but this particular piece is lovely.
Wow! I just found your channel. I dropped a box that held some sentimental figurines and shattered 3 or 4 of them . I thought I would see how other people have done repairs and pick up a few tips. I must say watching you just blew me away. I thought wow this guys really good! This is very professional, and looking at your hands , I bet he plays guitar too, and sure enough, you do. My dad played guitar and was a guitar maker so I’ve watched him repair a lot of stuff. I don’t have any airbrush skills but I have his files that he used to file down the frets so maybe they work, they’re really small. I’m going to look for the epoxy for the cracks. My dad would use tape like little clamps and I watched him spray beautiful sunburst designs on guitars. I wish he were still alive to help me fix these figurines but he is with me every time I do a project or watch someone like you who does amazing work. Thanks so much for sharing you talent.
Thank you for your art, I am about to attempt to repair a Tintin porcelain figurine I dropped the other day, and I learnt quite a bit from your videos! Let's hope I don't ruin it. Thank you!
Where in the States can I purchase the Golden Porcelain Restoration Glaze? I have searched and found the only locations are over the pond. thank you so much. I LOVE you videos.
Golden has discontinued this product. The last time I ordered it I had to contact Golden at their corporate email. They said they don't make it anymore and sold me one of their last bottles of it, saying that if I wanted more they'd make it for me but I'd have to by a gallon of it. That'd be expensive. But since their 8 oz. bottle of it will last me the rest of my career, I'm probably good for a while. I'm sorry to say, I don't have an alternative to suggest for this product.
I've been watching a few of his videos, and I've started fixing a few pieces of my own ceramics. I don't have his bonding agent, so I'm just using epoxy from the hardware store. They're not valuable pieces, so I don't mind using cheaper repair materials.
No a hot box is not mandatory. It hastens the curing process. Hxtal take 5 to 7 days to cure fully without a hot box. So be patient, check the alignment occasionally during curing time. My hot box is set at about 150F. So you could probably make a small hot box: a box with a high watt light bulb might work for you. Good luck to you.
Martin it’s so funny I have the same piece you happen to be repairing in this video broken in the same place, except the knee is broken in 2 instead of 3. My wife loves this figure. Can I ask you if you can fix it for me? Please let me know. I would be interested in fixing it right away.
Can I ask you what air brush you use. Because when you go to your link they have you do a quiz to see what is right for you. I don’t know that so could you tell me what your using?
Yes, I've used Araldite. It's a good bonding agent. I've not used it as a fill. I use A+B putty as a fill, not as a bonding agent. A+B would work as a bond but not as good as Araldite.
My hotbox is an old freezer, stripped down to just an insulated box with a door. Inside it there was installed a heating element from an electric oven. A thermocouple and a switch box with a temperature dial was added. There's also a small electric fan inside to circulate and even the heat distribution. There are shelves which I can adjust and add/remove as needed. I just set the dial for the temperature I want, usually about 150 F., and turn it on. The thermostat turns the heat on and off to maintain the set temperature. I use it mostly to preheat objects that are going to have HXTL applied to them, and also to speed curing of the HXTL already applied. Some epoxy gets stronger and/or cures faster when heated slightly. Occasionally, I'll use it to dry something out.
@@GET2222 send a photo to my email address: mscherer@tesserak.net I'll give you an "ballpark" estimate. let me know the approx. size of the object and whether you have all the pieces.
@@marsgitar Hi Martin, I’m contacting you regarding my wife’s Jewelry box that broke. I have a called a few times but no VM picks up. Hopefully you can call back and leave me a window of when to call if we don’t connect. ~JE
I use Goldens brand acrylic paints. Their airbrush paints are ready to use right out of the bottle. If I need to use their thicker paints, I dilute them with Goldens Airbrush Medium for use in the airbrush.
Hi Martin any other question please. I see you use Golden Porcelain matte glaze in this video to matte the surface down. Can i use this product but with the gloss to finish off if i need it to finished in gloss. The reason is i haven't been able to fine the other gloss you use.....here in Australia.I hope this makes sense....lol
It is my understanding that the "porcelain restoration glaze" shown in this video (and its gloss version) are meant to be a finishing coating in ceramic restorations. Check out Goldens web site for more info on their products. They will tell you more than I can remember. Lots of good info there. Have you tried contacting Sylmasta about an Australian distributor, or shipping to Australia?
love your repairs was wondering what kind of glue you used for the lady figurine hysol ?? what do you buy? or what do you recommend for a person who wants to repair a break in a figurine at home. A simple break kind of like the lady figurine you are repairing in the white porcelain figurine with 4 breaks. Thanks :)
Hxtal is a bit hard to work with. For non-porous ceramics, you could try Elmer's brand adhesive called "china and glass cement. For porous ceramics Elmer's white glue works fine. Good luck to you.
It's a high tech epoxy made for glass repair. It's called HXTAL. sometime listed as Hxtal NYL-1 epoxy. Look it up on the web for a good price on a 60 gram kit. Not easy to work with. Takes days to cure.
Cost is determined by how much work it is to repair it. Repair cost is based on the size of the object, how many broken pieces there are, how many missing pieces there are, how complicated t he design that must be replaced, how many colors must be replaced. Basically, cost is based on how hard it is to repair. It is not inexpensive.
Good question Linda. No I haven't. It's a good idea for a video to address this. Thanks for the suggestion. I may be a while 'til I get around to it though.

Yes, I've used Araldite. It's a good bonding agent. I've not used it as a fill. I use A+B putty as a fill, not as a bonding agent. A+B would work as a bond but not as good as Araldite.

How long do you let the miliput dry? Is it air dried?
Yes, air dried, overnight. Dries (cures) in about 4 hrs., but I let it go overnight for a little more hardness.
