Ed is young so I get his take on drinking. After about 30 is when I saw the trend with my friend group. At 35 most people I know barely drink. I stopped drinking at 33 when it noticeably impacted my sleep and didn’t have time to be sluggish or hungover
@@TR-lh9yz yup. Just like buying a house together before you're married. I'm not traditional when it comes to societal norms but doing that is a financial disaster waiting to happen.
If you make less money: fall in love with cooking, learn your parntner's tastes, and crush meals for them. A customized thoughtfully prepared meal is 1000x better than a bought meal. It has never been easier to learn even the most complex cuisines with YT, reddit, etc. I'm as whitebread and untrained as it gets but i now can cook a mean lasuni gobi thanks to YT.
100%. Also useful for dating - cooking a meal is something that proves you have a skill, similar taste and costs much less. My rule was second date was always a home cooked meal.
My wife and I have been doing the joint account for bills, and separate (but not secret) accounts for the rest. Best decision of our lives, and it’s been working for many years.
the obsession with needing alcohol to have friends or romantic partners must be cultural. i’ve personally never needed it for either. i will drink if i feel like it. but i can also go months or years without it and not even notice. it’s as important to my life as a handkerchief.
Stopped alcohol 3 years ago and I am healthiest I have ever been and I dont seem to be missing anything. Most alcohol culture is people acting like what they drink is way cooler than it is. Swirling the grape juice in a glass.... oh yeah it has notes of blackberry and cookie dough...
I'm going to see Ramit live at the House of Blues Chicago tonight. He's a freaking rock star! I would pay to see Scott and Ed do a live podcast, just saying.
In a previous relationship, we split expenses on net income (post taxes, etc) and each hand our own pocket money. Eg I earned approximately 60% net income and therefore covered 60% of our household expenses. Loose math, we ended up with the same amount of pocket money. It worked well for us.
Re: money. This woman I know her son is 30. Working-class. He's engaged to a woman who wants an engagement ring she picked out. Cost: $30K. Mother told her son not to spend so much. "Mon, then she won't marry me." Obviously, she is not the "one."
Already the subject is interesting to hear about finance and money, but so much more relevant when it comes to a couple and the dynamics that money can impose or give. Love that one.
Commenting in hopes that Ed or someone on the team can see my comment before the next episode!!! Scott's appearance on CNN commenting on wealth inequality is trending heavily on reddit (the only social platform I use, I purged all other platforms) and several different subreddits. Would love to get his take on his boosted exposure as of late. Love yall! Never stop uploading, your chemistry is infectious. ❤
We moved in together after 5 months of dating. We got a joint bank account a month later to make expenses easier. She did freak out at the spreadsheet I made for total expenses and each of our contributions. Included housing, utilities, food, dining, trips, basically anything 'us' related.
Very nice podcast again! I love the recurring topic of this podcast of the importance of generosity. Interesting thought about alcohol and drinking. Very correct observation that loneliness and not hanging out together anymore has to do with less alcohol consumption. I am not sure though if I agree that young people should drink more in order to socialize better. But we should discuss much more, that health culture (sleeping well, eating well, sports, less alcohol) is an important factor why people spend less time together. Healthy living is strongly discouraged in most groups.
New to the channel. Love you both. Insight, humour, practical. Guests are fab too. Wish I’d had this content in my 20s😂 your circle of influence or mentorship circle is now only limited by your imagination and interest.
Prof G, I immigrated from SA. Curious to learn what your thoughts were of the economic state of the country? There is a very high unemployment rate (40%+) which over time has created a wide disparity in income. Look fwd to your views. I make it a point to catch your pods weekly. Thank you for putting these out and doing u. Ed is wonderful too, I thanks!
As a kid (early 1990s), our family of 4 went for a ski weekend every year, making middle class money at that time. Now, i can't take my son skiing bc I can't justify spending $2k for a weekend on our middle class income.
We gave our daughter an amount for their wedding. Spend it all on the wedding or keep it. They chose to keep most of it… Small wedding and big honeymoon and a downpayment for a house
I’d go further (in relation to Scott’s response to the Democratic Party) and say that the key going forward is not JUST for the Democratic Party to embrace the Middle Class, but for them to embrace EVERYONE who isn’t rich. Most Americans are poor, not by historical standards or by global standards, but by modern American standards, it’s just a fact. We have organizations that define “poor” a certain way to make it seem like it’s not THAT bad, but IT IS. If you haven’t already, please read the book White Poverty by Reverand Dr. William Barber II & Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove. They make a great case for the Moral Fusion Movement and the need for a Third Reconstruction. I’d love to hear you have a conversation with them about this topic.
From a financial perspective, it would be interesting to know what percent of alcohol sales come from objectively inappropriate heavy/binge drinking. You could see an outcome where the percentage of Americans who drink moves very little, but those Americans drink *less* alcohol, perhaps significantly less, as Scott mentioned about himself...and that can still be very damaging to revenue.
Being from Park City from 2002-2020 you can see the inflow of people into the town over the past 12 years. You see the increase in housing prices, restaurants prices, and most especially the prices on the mountain. However, the increase of wage rates is not comparable to everything else, the rest of the state of Utah’s GDP is not comparable to Park City in general but especially now with Vail buying the Canyons Resort in 2013 and merging with Park City Mountain in 2014-15 season. Utah is a state that relies on the tourist economy but the tourist industry do not give back to the state. It makes it harder for these workers to live within 5-10 mi radius. Especially as all routes to their mountain bases has tripled in the time spent to get there. For example, I lived 5 mi away and would take it 15-30 minutes depending on the route and timing, now it takes a hour minimum during its peak hours before the mountain opens
I’d love to watch the video of your pods but they come out too late. Can you offer them when the podcast comes out? I think that would give you a better perspective of the medium preferred by your audience and you’d likely see RUclips really pick up. Thx.
The best advice for paying bills should be proportional to each others income. If one partner makes more then the other then figure out the percentage difference between the two different incomes and each pays that amount toward the bills. Then everybody contributes what is appropriate. If one makes 200k and the other makes 20k that’s 10% & 90% so one pays 10% of the total bills and the other pays 90% of the total bills and that way they are both contributing.
21:10 real talk women don't want a man that they have to support. All this talk about what men need to do. But I never hear anyone say to women that when you make more money you are financially responsible for the ones around you. Men know this, if guy is broke he stuck out of mating and dating.
Not sure about Sethi's take on renting. Landlords/ownership generally don't want to fix anything, and if they do it'll be the cheapest way possible. The dream of home ownership for me is less about an investment vehicle and more about security, stability, and responsibility.
Getting outdoors in snow: Snow shoe and XC skiing are great alternatives to bringing the family outdoors and not be beholden to the ski mountain conglomerate devils. All you need is snow.
14:07 i totally agree with scott here, I sincerely hope the democrats become the party of the working class again and ditch the old school racialized patron system.
the term "Partner" is very unhelpful in this discussion. -- regardless of people's choices/lifestyle there is a Grand Canyon gap between Married and Partner
@ not saying someone can’t tell what they mean, I’m saying it should change the advice. At least in the US the financial implications are very different for “partner” vs legally married.
@ changes based on long-term vs short-term. Generally his advice is gear towards long-term partners. Short term you’re probably not interested in this stuff anyways. But he does talk about this quite a lot :)
Skiing has been too expensive for most people for 50 years - this is not new! it's just worse. Snowshoeing is safer, more affordable, and more nature-centric.
The one thing about housing I've learned is this: If you're lower on the income ladder, get into a house as soon as possible. Those fixed payments are crucial to budgeting, especially as it will likely be harder to weather rent increases, let alone have any money left over to throw into investing. But if you're upper income? Likely better financially to rent and sock the leftover money you have each month into the market and see what comes down the pike. I always wondered why people would say, "owning a house doesn't make financial sense." That's often true if you're wealthy. Perspective and context is crucial to this discussion. Great episode
If you watch Ramit's stuff, he's not against buying a house. He just says run the numbers first. People compare rent to a mortgage payment and forget taxes, insurance, maintenance, upkeep, etc. Rent is the most per month you pay for housing. Mortgage payment is the least you will pay. In the US people seem to get irrationally obsessed with real estate for some reason.
I would disagree. What happens when your roof needs to be fixed? Your AC goes out? Your fridge or washing machine break? Most people low on the income ladder wouldn't be able to afford these. It's just not a black and white situation. Ramit isn't on the side of never buy, but run the numbers. You shouldn't be hard on either side realistically.
More disciplined, more educated and more valued in the workplace. Great line that is tough for both parties to recognize at times. Especially as roles and opportunities change over the years.
Scott we love you, but there are many many ways to have fun without alcohol. Obviously it’s fine occasionally but it definitely needs to be downgraded from being a social norm.
Agreed that the skiing duopoly needs to go away! And they deserve their stock plummet. Side point, the way a middle class family can "afford" to ski is by getting season passes ($700 -$1000) and go up as much as you can. Still incredibly expensive, but if it's your "winter thing" it works out

Sorry, but it really sounds like you did not give Ramit a fair shake. He has spent the past decade explaining to people why home ownership CAN be a wonderful choice, but sometimes it isn’t, and sometimes renting does make more sense. However, there are caveats, if choosing to rent instead of own, you must take conscious action to save and invest more because you aren’t automatically being forced to save for the future via paying off a mortgage and building equity in a home. Personally, I would love to own a home, but I am a data guy and in the current interest rate environment and with how affordable renting is in my area, it literally would cost me more to own, even over the very long-term (30+ yrs). Yes and no... The problem is it gets complicated by not whole facts. But there are some things that are just true disinformation no matter how you swing the facts. Problem is trust and people wanting to learn more - which seemingly 50% of America doesn't feel like doing.
Youth unemployment is over 25% in Europe and they spend their free time drinking and that's a huge issue for the government's...seems like Scott is promoting that sorta behavior🤦

Same. And now that I’ve stopped drinking, I still go out and have fun but I don’t miss the drinks or the hangover feeling.
Agree
One thing I would add - a joint account is something Married couples should do, and not “boyfriends & girlfriends”.
Totally agree. Unmarried people really shouldn't have combined accounts, buy a house together, etc. Just a disaster waiting to happen.

A bit optimistic. Hot(ie not fat) women enjoy “going out” more than the food itself.
I can recommend that. My mother taught me how to cook and it made things way easier. Im now happily married for 3 years at 26.

Skiing us just a status symbol now. It’s no longer the fun family activity it used to be.

Wasn’t generosity the plan for the trickle down economics play? I agree we should all be more generous but that didn’t work out well
Ed, “How early should you talk about it?” (Asking for a friend 😂)
Why are there ads on the RUclips version?

A middle class family cannot afford to experience having kids... let alone go skiing.

A rare decent opening joke from Prof. G. Very Catskills, but I will allow it! "Alcohol brings too much joy to my life" - spoken like a true Brit!
Alcohol is the single worst addiction to have… just stop!
Addiction is the problem. Not alcohol my good sir.
@ alcohol causes addiction FYI
Scott we love you, but there are many many ways to have fun without alcohol. Obviously it’s fine occasionally but it definitely needs to be downgraded from being a social norm.
Note all the shills below for various crypto-related stuff. Anyone note how quickly it falls when there's upheaval?
Your not a Show your an informative Podcast.

Alcohol gives you Cancer?!......I've been blaming this on the Olive in my Martini all these years.....whooda guessed?!
Uhmmm… did anyone else get some manosphere vibes on this one?
Not really, how so? Are you referring to Scott’s comments during the segment about alcohol and the Ramit segment?

Only a rich person can make renting sustainable
Thats objectively false.

I would suggest listening to his argument again :)
