  • We begin with the 1991 British Open Thursday morning broadcast opening, then skip to the Sunday coverage as Ian birdies 17 to clinch his victory. After that, we jump ahead to round 1 of the 1993 Colonial, where Baker-Finch had achieved his other PGA Tour win in 1989. This time, he apparently exploits a loophole in the dress code to make himself more comfortable.

"Sparrow" was an unbelievable putter.......in my top 5 of all time
and his chipping and pitching was great.
His irons were hit like they were laser guided
He was not long off the tee but he was no where near the shortest
To top it off he is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.

In 1984 "Sparrow" won the NSW Open at the Lakes Golf Club in Sydney
He shot -17 and won by 12 shots against a field that included Greg Norman and David Graham....I have played that course at least 20 times and over those 4 days the Lakes was the most DIFFICULT I have ever seen it in its old layout.
The greens were fast and HARD......In the Tuesday practice round...you could actually throw the ball into the 2nd green's surface and it would bounce up waist height for you to catch it. On the 3rd green there was a 35mph tail wind so the 2nd shot was either a 9 iron or a wedge. If you actually tried to land the ball on the green it would bounce 8 ft or more in the air and fly over the back of the green.
They watered the greens quite a bit on the Tuesday evening for the Wednesday Pro-Am .....but even with watering for the 4 days it played like a Open Championship course in a dry UK summer only with more grass on the fairways. You had to still land the ball short of quite a few greens and run it on.
Sparrows -17 is probably one of the greatest 4 round performances in the history of the game!!!!

Paul EJ Thanks for that recollection. I wasn't familiar with the event, but it seems to have been a top-tier Australian tournament during the 1980s. Also in 1984, Baker-Finch led the (British) Open Championship through three rounds (tied with Tom Watson), although his Sunday was disappointing.

Absolutely....We used to get many players from Europe and also the US who would come out here to Australia in our summer
In 1986/87 Greg Norman did something that no over golfer will ever do again...He won every mainland State Open Championship

Paul EJ Wow, that really was an incredible period for the Shark. His travel schedule must have been completely insane.

He was T7 along with Langer in the Australian Open at Metropolitan in Victoria
Baker-Finch was actually 2nd to Roger Davis in the Aus Open that year by 1 shot at Metropolitan
4 Major winners finished in the top 13

I thought Ben Wright and Gary McCord were a fun duo for CBS. Within a couple of years, both men would be punished for "PC" violations. Wright was permanently exiled for comments about the LPGA, and McCord was banned from the Masters for general irreverancy.

fierra76 LMAO...McCord's "crime" at the masters was to make the accurate and funny observation that the greens that year at Augusta were so fast that they hadn't been cut ...they had been bikini waxed!
