He has been recognized as one of the leading practitioners of contemporary classical architecture. Schafer's work has been featured in many publications. He specializes in building "new old houses" as well as renovating historic ones. This is his first book, and he begins with three essential cornerstones of a great traditional home.
Architecture, landscape and decor. When these three things come together in the design of a home, it creates an unspoken harmony. Schafer also explores ways in which to retain the well-loved proportions of detail and character. while balancing it with the needs of our 21st century lifestyle.
He also discusses the important connection between interior architecture and the way we decorate using fabrics, furniture, and wall treatments.

I watched this although I already own this book. It is at the top of my list for books I look at again and again. Gil's own home is the epitome of coziness, charm and beauty. It reminds me of my favorite houses from Traditional Home magazine in the 90's. I wish I had those issues back!

Gil Schafer He's a great architect. Just how Schafer places the buildings in the landscape and shapes it around them is very beautiful. His eye for detail makes these traditional buildings very authentic.

Really enjoyed this video! Again---you have showcased a designer I was not familiar with. And I agree: in creating spaces to be lived in, the architecture, interior design, as well as the landscaping---function as a whole! My library is growing---just received a few days ago, The Art of Collecting, from Victoria! LOVE YOUR CHANNEL, your choice of books, and the gracious way you present each book! Your channel keeps me in touch with the warmth of Southern charm! Thank You!

Wonderful book review, thank you! I would love it if you could review the books Private Newport and Living Newport by Bettie Bearden Pardee. I toured the grand homes of Newport a few summers ago and it was magical.
