I'll thank you now
Thanks
As a roadie, I enjoy these every week! Doddy is so informative, and doesn't just answer the question, but gives personal insight that people might not have considered otherwise.
Keep up the good work!
When you guys name the video some title that is ONE of many questions answered, the least you can do is add a time stamp so viewers can jump to that question.
What's the point of making a whole video then...
@@Albkiller22 well whats hes trying to say is he most likely searched for a video to see the right width of tires he should be running and wants a direct answer instead of having to watch the whole video. So the whole video isnt pointless but i would be nice to get a direct answer instead of having to watch or search through the whole thing which i what just happened to me.
@@epicalty8474 yeah but they earn money with watchtime so jumping to see a 1 minute part doesn't really support the channel
Giuseppe ahh your right that makes sense
@@epicalty8474 that makes sense if you really like their content and want to support them like I do
2.6" Smart Sam is a great tyre, rides really smooth on the road, plenty of footprint on the trails.
I Run 2.40 / 2.50 Excellent Traction To Weight Ratio 😎
It would be really helpful if you all had your questions with timestamps in the video description. Thanks for providing such great information!
Doddy, you are the Oracle of MTBs. Thanks for all the info and researching those bikes for me. Much appreciated. Love the look of the Whyte by the way, but you're right there's nothing wrong with the Yeti, so sticking with that for now. I demoed a YT Capra with 650b wheels and loved how it rolled over the terrain and my hardtail is 650b too.
I could watch doddy talk about tech all day,.
With yer old chap out?
Phantom Big Balls hahah funny that bro
I like how Doddy seemingly pulls various items out of his ass
Some sewer covers in my town are across the street with longitudinal cuttings. If one ride a street bike it must pass diagonaly or the front wheel get stuck between. And its dangerous to do that because you cant always go sideway in traffic. So i chose an MTB for commuting in town (6km) and for fun ride. At my old bike i replaced 2.1 default with 2.2Continental. At my new bike i still use 2.1Maxxis but with lower pressure.
Really informative Doddy. These shows get better and better. Really appreciate the hard work you must be putting in to produce this material. Cheers.
What the hell am I missing? How come you blokes only have 39K subs? I've learned loads from you, and by now you should have millions of subs!

I Love the New 2.6 Specialized Butcher Gripton Grid @ 20 PSI for only $60
The whole point of a dual air fork is the tuning capabilities don’t add oil, you adjust the progression with the air balance between the chambers.
A medium cage 11sp XT RD-8000 GS will even run with an 11-50 tooth cassette in the back, although the chain tension is near borderline, and the B screw might reach its limit. You can pimp it with several upgrades though (Wolfcage, Goatlink, Garbaruk cage, etc), which all should improve things. I was running the XT SG with the massive 50 in the back for some time though, and it did work. I eventually upgraded to a Wolfcage though to improve shifting performance.
I love my Orbea Occam tr m10 2018. Just got it and love it. Light, fast, and playful. I also have a spare wheel set in plus that fits on the frame depending on where I am riding
The first question on the nukeproof i have the same bike and same issue i took it down to my local shop and it was a collapsed bearing
Doddy is right about the 3M tape. It's fantastic at frame protection. However, if you change your mind & want to take it off for some reason it can be a bit of a nightmare to get off. I'm speaking from experience here. So if you're going to use it try & make sure you're not going to want to take it off in the future.
I've found that as you go bigger, it is more about the capabilities of the bike and as you go smaller it is more about the capabilities of the rider. That is the feeling I get with sizing. On a smaller bike (within reasonable limits) I feel more like my bike follows me. With bigger bikes the feeling changes more towards me being the one that "follows" the bike. This makes sense. Imagine an adult riding a small 20" kids bike, the bike can just follow the adult on top, but if you put a 10yo kid in a XXL 29er, the kid is the one following the bike. I rather have a happy medium with tendency to downsizing for it to feel more playfull, nimble and agile but respecting the limits of "bike size to my size ratio"
On the cassette question. I ran a 25T capacity zee mech with a modified 11-36 cassette to 11-42. Worked well without the need for a goat link or longer b screw. Only think to consider is maybe chain growth so yea. The “No chance” statement is incorrect. It s worth trying.
For the question from @ArronHold about trying to fit a bigger cassette, I'll sugest to buy the wolf tooth goatlink. It's a little mech hanger extensor wich is screwed into your original mech hanger dropping 2cm your derailleur. This allows you to fit a bigger cassette no matter if you are running a 9, 10 or 11 speed derailleurs.
i recently did this upgrade with the goatlink on a shimano xt 786sgs (long cage). i'm running a 11-42 shimano hg-500 cassette, oneup components 34 oval chainring and a shimano xt hg-95 chain and it works great!
Or the one-up RADR cage, which is what I did to move to 42t.
I live in the dry desert. With of course alot of sand. In order to get all the grit out of my chain. I need to degrease it,clean it and relube after every ride. Is this overkill or good practice for preserving my drivetrain.
hi ,
i have a 2021 giant stance 2 with 2.3 tiers .i upgrade the front to a 2.5 and the rear to 2.4 ,is it a good upgrade?
The Trail King (former Rubber Queen) is the largest non plus tire I know. I think I measured it with 164mm bead to bead, which is about 8-10mm more than other 2.4" tires. Note that this is not the tire width when mounted, but from one end of the carcass to the other. Which means that this tire has a huge volume. And actually a wide rim will make the tire less tall, as it stretches out the tire and makes it wider. On skinnier rims the tire grows even more in height.
Apparently Continental has overhauled their "noble" tires (Baron, Trail King, Mountain King, etc) for 2018 with a unified carcass, so it might not be as large as before. But I haven't seen a new model yet, so I can't tell.
My tires are 2.5 Minion DHF front and 2.3 Agressor on the rear on NOBL tr38 wheelset. But about the gear box. Wouldn't it also feel better having all the weight centralized and low (for handling purposes) i would love to hear doddys thoughts on where the weight is distributed
Ahhhh tecky tecky tech tech... This is what GMBN should have been like from the start boys. Keep up the good work Doddy. I feel like Johnny 5 - "input input!"
Commencal meta tr is a super underrated trail bike, with agressive geo + it’s a direct sale brand (the top model is $5000 AUD and it comes with a lot of good stuff)
I like the Goodyear 2.6 Escape on the front, the cornering teeth are a bit small but it looks better for durability. The sidewall support at low pressure is tough to beat.
I bought a Giant XTC 26+ with a 2.8 inch (71 mm) wide tire but as I ride mostly on tarmac I want to switch to a tire that has a street profile. What is the widest street tire? I found as the widest only 2.5 inch wide tires like Maxxis Hookworm. Aren't there any wider tires for streets?
Im running a medium cage XT on 10-46, works perfectly!
My name is Jeff I do fix place on the side and getting back into mountain biking and every type of writing you think of but my question is was the big difference between the hybrid bike with a 700 C rooms and tire to mounting bike like 29 or a 27.5 mountain bike because I am converting a hybrid bike from Academy Sports to a mountain bike with 29 rims and tires instead of the 700c and changing some parts from breaking your combo to a separate braking system like a hydraulic brakes and separate gears from. 8 gears to maybe 10 or 12 gears. 800 millimeter bars with or 45 stem
I really resonate with what you said about the getting the biggest frame you can get away with. Even as a medium size rider.. This video has me seriously questing my choice of a size medium frame on my new purchase. Even with a 60mm stem w/6 degree rise and 40mm rise bars I still feel I'm over the front end with the reach too short. I'm 5.8 and and purchased a 2020 Ragley mmmbop with some modern slacker geometry.. bike is awesome maybe should have got a size large.
Is there really anything special about shock oil or can you just use motor oil?
The csu isn't different for the different travel forks... they just print 2 different markings to reduce the amount of unique parts... u can run an pike at 120 to 160 regardless of what sag markings are on it...
Well... they are different... but its just the markings... the stanchion tube are the same
I have 4". My back tire blew out. I have 7 gear derailleur. I dont have a clue. Dont have many tools. Im 70 yrs old and fairly active but my bike weighs over 65lbs. I had a blowout and I tried to fill it back up. It wont go past 12lb Then the valve which seems loos syatys pissing out the air..FAST.I think that the air might have leaked out whie rideing and blew out. BTW this is an Ebike. Is this a repair that a beginner should attempt?
Hi GMBN,
I am quite a newbie with MTB... I recently bought a Rockrider st100. Could you please advise what could be the best upgrade I can make on this bike ? And if you don't mind, an approximate budget I can spend on that... Thanks.
Should the rear tires be smaller than the front tires? I running 27.5 x 2.6 (continental trail king) for front tires now.
please answer my question
Two Years ago i bought Orbea H30 Occam which came with High Roller II 2.5WT on Front and Rekon 2.4WT rear. These WT Tires are actually optimizer for 35mm RIM but my RIM is 25mm. I don't know why they put WT Tires on such a small RIM. Next year i'm gonna switch to non WT Tires but i have to go with 2.3, because Maxxis from 2.4 are almost all WT. Is it huge difference between 2.5 and 2.3?
Hey doddy, in regard of gearbox bikes you should definatly have a look at the effigear gearbox and cavalerie bikes. I really like the idea of the pivotpoint of the swingarm beeing coaxal with the sprocket. It would be the only way I would consider a gearbox on my bike. This combined with a low mounted rear shock would be perfect in regards of weight distribution.
Can I reduce my tyre to 2.4 tyre? I am using Bontrager Line 40, Tubeless Ready, 28-hole, 40mm width.
GMBN, don't you guys think it's high time you did an indepth review on different fullsuspension system to look out for when buying a FS bike and how they ride?
I've been in a state of dilema since half a year now, contemplating what to buy.
Another idea is, what are axle sizes in forks, 9mm,15mm and the other bigger ones. If my bike came with a 9mm QR axle can I buy a 15mm QR axle fork to replace it? will is fit my frame?
You often mention doing a lower leg service on forks, however the manual for my 2017 Fox 34 only mentions checking after each ride and an annual service - nothing about a lower leg service after x hours.
Should I be taking it apart and changing the oil? Or just following the advice in the manual from Fox? The same goes for my shock.
If i want to use 2.35 or 2.40 tire how do i chose the correct rim width?
27.5 x 2.25 Schwalbe Smart sam, will try it tomorrow.
Should I put a dropper post on my specialized chisel expert xc bike? And if yes, is there a dropper route through the frame?
I run up to 3 inch (77mm) and like to ride 50 mm on my touring bike.
At more than 110 kg I need the stability of a wide tire on multi purpose trail at slow speed.
My rim is 26x1.15-2.25,
Can i use tire with 2.30 width?
I am running a 1x11 Shimano XT setup with a RaceFace narrow wide chain ring. I have noticed I must have caught my derailleur at some point as the paint is scuffed off the metal frame over the lower jockey wheel. It is now not changing gear very smoothly so I thought the rear hanger or mech is bent, looking at the chain line it appears to be perfectly straight. How can I tell if things are bent, is there a way to use a ruler or a straight edge to measure things or should I be looking at other things like replacing the gear cable (had it on for over a year now). No matter how many times I try to index my gears I can hear a slight clicking in certain gears and it jumps occasionally.
Thanks Doddy, loving the new tech channel!
ultiss checked all that and all good.
It seems very difficult to understand what rim width and what tire width will equal actual tire width in the end. With each rim and tire manufacturer having so many different standards. Is the only way to know what the end tire width will be is to actually mount the tire and the rim and then measure? For instance, I am curious about running a Light-Bicycle 30mm internal width rim with a 48mm Switchback Hill tire. However, my frame will accommodate 52mm maximum clearance. Will this rim and tire combination equal out to over 52mm? Is there any way I could figure this out before actually buying the rims and tires? Thanks
With the question about will the derailleur fit on a wide range cassette wolf tooth make a thing called the goat link which allows a medium cage derailleur to fit on a 11 - 42 cassete
I think a short cage will get away with a 40t cassette if u put a derailleur hanger on your derailleur hanger lol , I forgot what its called but it drops your derailleur to where it should be apparently
I got a 27.5 moutain bike frame but the tyres rub on back they are 2.25 was wondering if I could put 2.10 instead
I'm wanting to start riding and need new tires. Is there any issues if I run 26x2.25 rear and a 26x2.40 on the front? Unsure my 2012 giant boulder can run 2.4 rear. Thanks.
I have a question... What bike do you think will be better for trail riding... canyon nueron 7.0 or spectral 5.0 as there is only a couple of hundred pounds between them. Im 5'9" and inseam roughly 34" what would your recommended bike be aswell. Thanks love the channel 👍
Is it possible to use a Michelin wild enduro 2.4 front and a Michelin wild enduro 2.6 at the rear.
Love your channel. Some of the best videos out there... but this title was a bit misleading. I came for the width of tire.
As always, great video Doddy.
Hi need help i had purchased a fat bike 26*4 inch
Can i use a smaller size tyre in same 26 inch frame or any solution to my problem its too heavy to drive
Is Kashima coating worth it
I have. 65 mm width and 26 inch wheel and I want to put a 4 inch tire is that possible ?
Is there anything you can do to adjust an older 170mm coil fork.
Doddy im probably wrong but ive had 3 rear mechs
1. Shimano deore 10 speed w/clutch
2. Shimano zee 10 speed w/clutch
3. Sram x1 11 speed
My shimano zee was the best rear mecg clutch wise as its about 30% better than the deore and 20% better than the x1 (clutch strength wise) anyways those numbers are rough estimates but just though id let u know about my experience
yes different types of drivetrain video would be awesome , hub gears anyone????
My 2018 Spectral 6.0 came with DHF 2.6 front and Rekon 2.6 , rear has a tube now and I just got an EXCELLENT deal on Conti Trail King 2.4 but I haven't installed them yet, good idea? 2019 Spectral comes with 2.4
I ride 27.5x2.3. Can I put a wider tyre on there without changing my rims?
So bigger on the rear and smaller on the fron? I tought it should be the other way around
can i run 2.80 wider tire on a 35mm rim? please let me know asap. i need new tires but a want to go a bit wider coming from a 2.60 currently
What do you think about belfort bikes????
Hi my wheels are 23c 29er can I put 2.5 maxxis minion tyres on these?
Great vid, but I'm still a little confused. can a 52 - 622 tyre replace a 57 - 622 one?
Cheers!
Why didnt you recommend the yt jeffsy? It is an absolutley machine and costs "only" 2000€ (the cheapest but awesome version). 150mm front and rear!!
what tire size should i put in my 27.5 rims 32mm wide (outer) & 27mm (inner) to fit my 26er frame in the rear?
Hay doddy, I've seen a trek fuel ex8 26"wheel bike, for a bargain. I'm taking the plunge from road to mtb. What are your thoughts, it has odd shifters? Anything else I need to know?
Edward straka I started out on a Trek stache 5, and I absolutely love it. I think starting out on a solid hard tail is a great way to set a solid foundation for your skills. A full squish bike allows you to get sloppy on the trails, whereas on a hard tail you have to pay closer attention to what you are doing. They are a hell of a lot of fun and just as capable as a full squish just a little rougher ride.
i have a rockshox deluxe shock on my trek. There is a lock out on it but i dont know if it is 2 or 3 steps. when it goes from open to closed i goes all the way, but the other way around there is like another step. It stops in the middel.
is there 2 or 3 steps on the lockout?
I've said it before that a two minute video answering one question that way when I search for a video it pops up. Often a search won't pop up questions that has been answered that is not related to the title.
Best show our there!! Awesome work Doddy... You can really tell how much effort you put in!! Keep it up!
i ride 2.5" everywhere, except for my dirt jumper which runs on 2.4" Holy Rollers - that's the wide version and coincidentally the widest tyre i could squeeze in the rear anyway
Is that Scotch 3M tape the 2228 or something different?
Hey doddy, I too am a big fan of long slack geometry, being a huge fan of pole, Nicolai and my favourite mondraker🤙🏼 I’m currently riding a 2016 Santa Cruz Bronson C(the pink one😉). It’s the best bike I’ve ever ridden, I do a lot of trail riding, but also street riding on it, Fabio Wilmer style, just not as good. I really want the mondraker dune RR, but with 170mm up front, and long slack geometry, I’d be afraid I couldn’t do street riding on it? Should I just get the thought out of my head and stick with the Bronson? Or could I street ride the slack mondy? Cheers GMBN Tech
29x 2.5 DHF / 2.4 DHR II
Can we have a video on adjusting mechanical disc brake cables?
Hey i have a roscoe trek 7 and i changed the tyre on them to a 2.4 and the bike is more so down Hill so is that a good size
very useful advice, having a fatter tyre at front. Thanks
Doddy, I wanna know does J-Bended spokes have barely any difference in performance, durability and stiffness when compared to straightpull spokes?
If I have a bike with a Fox 34 Float Factory fork (120mm travel) with a head tube angle of 67.2, how would the head tube angle change if I changed to a Fox 32 fork (100mm travel)? Trying to turn a trail bike into a XC race bike.
MI-XC you want to measure the length of the head tube to the floor and then take away 20mm. If rhe Head angle changes by over 10% then don't do it.
Doddy , you’re overall knowledge and realistic advice seems to be quite extensive..I love hearing your take on things. Kudos👊🏻👍🏻
I have a 10mm clearance both sides in the rear whell im planning to go 27.5x2.25 tires does it still fit to my frame ?
I just got a Niner jet 9 RDO , I’m coming from a 26” and I wanted a 27.5 bike (I’m not a fan of any 29er I have ever ridden) and not sure if you know but the jet 9 rdo is 27.5 plus bike (that can fit 29” wheels) and it comes with 2.8 27.5plus tires on it, my tires being worn out I’m throwing a set of 2.6 DHR 2s on it, I wanted to know if there would be any adverse effects on throwing smaller 27.5 tires on a dedicated 27.5 plus bike that is capable of 29er wheels ?
Hey Dody , broke my wrist pretty bad last year at antur ... just getting back on the bike but have the fear .. can you recommend a good wrist support/guard ? Cheers fella.
my dropper post takes two presses to get it fully extended. the first to get 90/95% of the way up the second to get the last little bit. i've tried adding pressure but this didn't change much. any ideas? for reference its a cube dropper that came with the bike when new. cheers
vonpupees Probably cable tension. When you reset the lever, you get your tension back.
Can you make an older 170.. coil fork fit a 27.5 insteas of a 26in.
Question I have the enve M60/40 boost wheels how wide of tyres can I go with?
Have you guys had a review of those chaoyang Tires.. .
I’ve got a Whyte t130s. It rocks!
29 x 1.95 mtb tyre.. can I up to 29x 2.25?
So I needed a new back tire. The one I’m replacing is 26x2,1. As I now put air in it, I realized that it’s a full centimeter thinner than the one that was previously (the one I’m running in the front). I don’t get why, and what size I’ve to look for. Can anyone help ?
2.5 WT maxxis minion dhf front, 2.4 maxxis aggressor rear
27.5x3.0 and i LOVE it!
I recently installed a new Sram gx 2X10 deralliur to my bike. But when it’s in the highest gear (smallest rear cog) the chain is way too slack until you pull it by hand. Any suggestions on what to do?
I've converted from 2x to 1x using the same cranks. The chainline seems too far over to the right when viewed from above, and looks a bit dodgy on the largest cogs of the cassette (it comes off if I back pedal). Is there a way to space my chainring over to get a more central chainline? Thanks, love the show
Check the page from OneUp, they have an explanation somewhere, and also offer chain rings with spacers or offsets that might help.
