  • First lets give around of applause to the men and women at the La Plata, MO Fire Department for responding and acting quickly to this locomotive fire on BNSF Train F-ZG4TU1-02Z. Here's the story on what happened. I had just missed a train while coming into La Plata, MO from Kirksville, MO. I figured it was a UP Z Train due from all the EMP, HUB Group, & UMAX containers it was hauling. So I parked my car by the Amtrak Station to wait for the next train and not even there for ten minutes I hear someone dialing up the BNSF Marceline Dispatcher on my scanner. It was the conductor on UP 6455 telling the dispatcher that they're stopped at Hilton Avenue due to their second engine catching on fire. The conductor said to the dispatcher that they already used two fire extinguisher for the fire, but it's still smoking from inside the engine and was afraid to open the doors on the side of the locomotive. The BNSF Dispatcher contacted the La Plata, MO Fire Department to let them know what's going on. I got on my phone to see where Hilton Avenue was located and was just under three miles from where I was. I quickly got on Highway 156 West to head towards the location of the train. While less than five minutes on the highway a La Plata Cop or Macon Cop flew pass me with his lights and sirens on which had me thinking that he was going to the same location I was going to. I finally get on Hilton Avenue which was a muddy gravel road. I had to drive slow because it was kind of slick from the storm that swept through the area that morning. When I got to the crossing where the train was at the second engine (UP 6766) was still smoking from both sides of the engine. I had to stay on the other side of the tracks so I wouldn't be in their way. When I first got there the policeman that passed me on 156 was already on the scene. Then five minutes later the La Plata, MO Fire Department showed up and got to work fast. It was amazing seeing those men and women getting it done out there. It was my first time seeing this in person. After everything was cleared with the smoke it was time to release the train traffic that was being held up from the train fire. Again, thanks to the hard working men and women at the La Plata, MO Fire Department.

Those GE's are notorious for catching fire. You would think they would have it figured out by now.

Who would of thought, 2 old diesel locomotives would last fine but a new diesel locomotive catches fire?

UP #6766 is actually older than #6455, which already caught fire, judging by the exchanged side panels. SD60M #2337 is just 7 years older, that's not so much for locomotives.

To : Nicholas S, It's hard to look at the American Flag on that Union Pacific, alot of people have died and fought for that flag and it's way too hard to watch this video! But I have to give my love for those firemen who are so brave and tough to enter anything including a burning train like the Union Pacific? When 911 came around, I alway's support the men and women in uniform and especially this and it takes alot of guts to do a job like this & just want to say thank you for what you do gentleman and my heart goes out to all of you ? ( USA,USA, USA,USA ) ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
