  • Filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos has created with his “Poor Things” the first true fairytale for the 21st Century. It features the kind of warped and twisted characters that made the Brothers so grim while being laced with a modern approach to the moral of the story.
Those who have seen other works by Lanthimos - “The Lobster,” “The Favourite” - come to this film equipped with an open mind to the absurd, outrageous and bold. A warning should be issued immediately to those who are only a fan of traditional cinema that seeing this film will either open your eyes to the wonder that can be created through painfully original thinking or send you shrinking back into the safe confines of your predictable film world.
“Poor Things” revolves around Bella Baxter who is brought to life through an Oscar-worthy performance by Emma Stone. Bella is a pregnant Victorian woman who is Frankensteined back to life by Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe) after her suicide. The re-animation comes with a medical twist as the doctor replaces Bella’s brain with that of her baby.
Bella’s rapid mental growth starts with her having a toddler’s approach to the world with an adult woman’s body. She quickly goes from awkward baby steps and a limited vocabulary to a more adult version that comes with a massive curiosity about the world, especially anything having to do with sexual matters.
Bella’s overwhelming desire for knowledge leads her to running off with a scoundrel lawyer, Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo). He eventually fails to keep up with Bella ‘s maturity and passion for equality.
“Poor Things” - based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray - works because of Stone (who is also an executive producer). Her courage to push past conventional acting to play a character who goes from innocent to provocative sets the perfect tone for the entire production.
