Extremely nostalgic with a tinge of sadness for those of us whose fathers survived the war and were transported to and from the antipodes on this remarkable vessel. For the troops, the voyage was uncomfortable due to sardine tin-like packing of men and uninteresting, often greasy food, but she always got there without either causing or suffering loss of troop lives. But sea-sickness was another matter and my dad (born the year Aquitania was launched) and was never seasick in his life, recounted the particularly harrowing passage through the Great Australian Bight when 80% of the men were struck down with sea-sickness and the all-pervasive, lingering effluvium it created in the close quarters!!
Aquitania was also scrapped on 2004, and was the last surviving four-funnelled ocean liner.Widely considered one of the most attractive ships of her time, Aquitania earned the nickname "Ship Beautiful".In her 36 years of service, Aquitania survived military duty in both world wars and was returned to passenger service after each. Aquitania's record for the longest service career of any 20th-century express liner stood until 2004.
i agree especialy titanic's first sister olympic she was built before titanic and survived four major refittings she should have been made into a floating museum like the queen mary was
hello please answer and sry my bad english. i know the aquitania did not sink but what let it for the ship? like olympic destroyed for iron or like queen mary somewhere have one dock plz answer
Can you imagine if they cared about the historical value of these ships if they were saved today? I believe they'd have more fame being of the Titanic era.
Aquitania served thru 2 wars and far more, but never was known to have had a serious mishap during its long life. She turned out to be a very safe ship for those who sailed on her.

I wish this ship and the RMS Olympic were preserved and not scrapped. I would have loved to have walked through them. Making the liners museums would have been a great investment. Plus would give people a chance to see what Titanic, Britanic, Lusitania, and Mauratania were like.
The cruising industry changed from transportation to vacation. People traveled by sea on steam ships because they were the 747's of the day. "We've gone from elegant wooden masted ships to imposing iron new steamers so gross in size, so fast and full of gaudy luxuries that one barely is aware they are at sea at all, gone are the days of the beautiful wooden masted ships with their connection to the sea." ;) The QM2 is a deep keeled liner designed in the spirit of the old ships BTW.
Olympic class liners used powerful blowers in conjunction with several large vents; other vessels had passive systems, that required a whole lot more vents to achieve the desired effect. I rather haphazardly stumbled into that recently.. all those little vents are kinda.. interesting!
My Father sailed from England to Canada on this ship in April of 1947 and I have two pictures of him on deck and four menus from April 8th 9th and 10th 1947
You are actually right. There is an Australian billionaire who is funding the construction of Titanic II in China to the exact dimensions and features. The differences will be invisible such as modern navigation systems and diesel power. No steerage class cabins but there will be 1st class parlor suites and all common areas faithfully reproduced. Can't wait!
no the plans were based off the Lusitania, and Mauritania I can see why you think that. She was bigger than the olympic class ships because she was built after, and ships ships getting bigger. The Aquitania's original bridge was below the boat deck. The Aqutania was bigger than the Lusitania, and Mauritania.
+Saras Hajirnis Aquitania was 901 feet long. The Olympic class ships around 872 feet long meaning they were smaller. Lusitania and Mauretania were fast but could not compete with the luxury offered by White Star with RMS Olympic and so Cunard played with this idea and came up with a larger vessel than anything any British competitors could throw at it, RMS Aquitania.
You have to remember the times. Rebuilding or saving ships that were like the Titanic would be like the world of today deciding to re-build the WTC exactly as it originally stood or suddenly coveting and treasuring every building designed by Minoru Yamasaki. That may happen still 88 years from this moment. These ships were and are memorizing but just as it is impractical to hang onto old ships now, so too was it then. I agree, it is a shame, but se' live.

I love all 4 stackers! White Stars 3 sister's are my favourite Olympic, Titanic and Britannic. Although Cunards 3 Aquatania, Mauretania and Lusitania were just as nice in their own right! I just didn't like how Cunard went to nuts with deck vents top side and on the "poop deck" on their 3..
I hate how they scrapped these type of ships so much wonderfully hand carved details gone today's cruise ships will never live up to the majesty of these ships never you could have all the best entertainment and all sorts of things that would cater to adults and children a like but nothing, nothing will ever surpass these great ships question to all of you youtubers What Happened To These Ships Not Only For Entertainment But To Make Them Massive Pieces Of Art made with the blood sweat and tears
Probably the most beautiful ship after Titanic's very short life. I feel sorry all of them are no longer here and still oporational... (and I probably spelt that wrong but you get the chiz)
Actually Lusitania and Mauretania predated the Olympic-class by at least five years. They were meant to compete directly with the German lines who were dominating the Atlantic routes with their Kaiser-class. The Olympic, Titanic, and Britannic were bigger and more luxurious. That's why Aquitania looks more like the White Star ships.
There's a the SS United States which isn't scrapped. She has spent around 40 years in the Philadelphia harbor just rusting and rotting away. A scrapping would be preferable than slowly rusting away and be "forgotten". The Queen Mary is still around.
I'm with you, it's tragic. But it absolutely had to happen. I've had the privilege to tour old ships waiting in Piraeus to be taken to the scrappers (often Gadani beach) and they are almost all beyond any further economic use, and an enviromental liability. If you can, go and stay on the Queen Mary in Long Beach - if you're an old ship junkie like me you'll love it!!
If you ask me, cruise ships today have no purpose. All they do is run around in circles in some tropical island paradise. I love ocean liners but I think it's better to not exist than exist with no purpose.
Yeah, a grand piano falling through one deck to the one below it was definitely a safety hazard and this was it for Aquitania, but it is too bad that they didn't build four funnelled steam (or motor) ships after this one! At least it wasn't the pipe organ or orchestra such as the one playing the music in this video, then somebody would have been hurt or died, whereas with the piano, from what I heard, Cunard and White Star were quite lucky!
Britannic was only better than her two previous sisters (Olympic and Titanic) but Aquitania was a new kind of design. She and Britannic came actually in the same time....
Yes but it is meaningless. Aquitania was a Parsons turbine powered ship with four propellers. Britannic had only two four-cylinder triple-expansion reciprocating engines and one turbine in the center shaft (three propellers). Read some information about both vessels before you start writing nonsenses.....
I never said that the Olympic Class ships had a better powerhouse...I said that they had better safety features and were more luxurious. Maybe you should thoroughly read my posts before writing nonsense XD
the ship i know was scrapped was olympic in 1935 havent done enough research on the others other than olympic titanic britannic that is the order of construction for the three
Well, today's ships are designed for a different purpose. Modern people want modern accommodation and modern safety standards. Ships today have a lot harder to make ends meet since those old ocean liners made most of their money from immigrants and a tidy sum from overseas travelers. Today almost everybody travels by plane, so ships need to have something that validates people's interest to travel with them.
Aquitania was the only ship to survive both world wars for Cunard Line. And held the blue ribband, and was bigger than the Olympic class. Cunard copies and copied no one, they were the first, and still are original.

Imagine if the Olympic, Aquatainia and the Mauritania were never scrapped, they would’ve made great museums.
They would fall apart with rust.
@@jimcrawford5039 They would be renovated ffs.
Most of the Olympic because it was more famous than the Aquitania and Mauretania probably the Aquitania and mauretania got scrapped
@@enriquemalparidabermejo8332 Mauretania was legendary for its speed and Aquitania was the last of the four stackers and the largest
My Mom was a War Bride. We arrived in Halifax on the Aquitania.
my great granddad travelled on this ship to NY. Now i feel the past so near and imagine his great adventure. Im proud of him.
Just thought I'd post a comment saying this video is great. Thanks for taking the time to make it! Love the song too.
Actually, Aquitania was the culmination of a Cunard trilogy; her earlier sisters were Lusitania and Mauretania.
I wish we would have saved more of these old ships.
You can see why she was called the "Ship Beautiful' one of the greats.
Cunard Line VS Vhite Star Line! The great rivalry!

Aquitania was very beautiful and her name has a ring to it everytime one says it. I love it!

Can you imagine if they cared about the historical value of these ships if they were saved today? I believe they'd have more fame being of the Titanic era.
Well Cunard DID make a Britannia. First ship they made. Also Aquitania's sisters were Mauretania and Lusitania so really she didn't need one.
Aquitania served thru 2 wars and far more, but never was known
to have had a serious mishap during its long life.
She turned out to be a very safe ship for those who sailed on her.
For me "The Grand Old Lady"was the most beautiful of all the four stackers. Proportions of hull, superstructure are perfect!
4:50 Cunard White Star Line
yes
lo20s what happend to white star line???
During the economic crisis, White Star Line and Cunard had to join together to survive. They were recommended by the British Admiralty.
lo20s ah ok thanks

Aquitania, the most beautiful fourstacker in history.
in my opinion the Olympic Class was nicer looking
Didn't have as many vents on the deck
The vessel was retired and scrapped in 1950 in Scotland,

Aquitania is sister ship of Lusitania and Mauretania
not exactly, not really even a half sister. They just shared an overall "similar" design
I wish this ship and the RMS Olympic were preserved and not scrapped. I would have loved to have walked through them. Making the liners museums would have been a great investment. Plus would give people a chance to see what Titanic, Britanic, Lusitania, and Mauratania were like.
Same place as where the RMS Lusitania was made. :)

Many of the ships were larger than the Titanic, but at least for me it is the Titanic ship thank you very much, it was particularly due to its story!

Her life was longer and happier than the "White star" "Olympic" Trio.

Cunard's Aquitania was much better designed vessel than all three White Star Olympic Class ships.
Safety wise, Britannic was far better as it came later and had better features. Beauty wise, its also hard to go against the Olympic Class.
Britannic was only better than her two previous sisters (Olympic and Titanic) but Aquitania was a new kind of design. She and Britannic came actually in the same time....
