Massive White Oak on the Sawmill

- My sister helped me saw up this giant white oak. The idea was to cut an 18" x 18" white oak post for my friend Nate from @BissellMapleFarm. It was more of a challenge than I expected.

Oh I love how you as his wifey loves his big wood more than he does. It’s fun to hear you both. That’s is a big oak log, I get huge cedar and pine logs but no hard woods. My mill will handle 36 inch logs, but unfortunately I don’t have a tractor or skid steer yet. Take care and God bless you folks. Thanks for sharing!!
Well, now, I do appreciate big wood (and that log was close to the limit), but I'm just his sister. George tends to use the double-meaning terms for woodcraft, so it would be difficult NOT to tease him.
For (lignin-type) wood: It's actually kind of good not to get all the best tools at once. Gives you the chance to hone your skills. Best wishes for future upgrades, though!

That was a lot of turning for such a big log, but it sure made a difference in the end product. You have the little skid steer that could. Fun process to watch.
Yea a lot of turning considering I usually just make one turn when I'm slabbing. That was a huge log and I've got another white oak that is a little bigger.

I have the same Sawmill as you have. However I have extra extensions for my Mill and can cut over 24' in length. These extra length logs are extremely heavy and they take extra care to put on the Mill. I use my bulldozer with a logclam to load the big ones and a Kubota GX135 tractor to load the smaller ones equipped with a logclam. Enjoy your videos. Good luck in 2024.!!

the 5-gallon bucket to collect sawdust is a great idea.
I use a bucket on my mill too. My son uses the oak sawdust to grow mushrooms. No bark. Clean dust.
i also have a WM and I noticed one problem. It is the source of the wavy cut starting. You need to clean the bark with a brush, the dirt and sand (rocks) dull your blade. It also knocks out the set and that is where those lines come from parallel to the blade. Your blade life will be much longer if you're cutting into clean bark. It is a nice 18" cant. Also I keep the framing square at the mill and use it to verify the squareness before the cut by putting it against the underside of the blade and down the cut side of the log. Oh I'm aware. This log the second day was frozen, we tried to brush the dirt off but It wasn't moving so I said heck with it, I got more blades...

I got him a nice, wide wire (grill) brush for Christmas...and painted "blade saver" on the handle. He used it in a later video.

In 2021 my dad helped me heave the butt end of a 10'6" long bur oak long onto my mill. It was January, just barely above freezing, and my mill was in my garage. We did it all with ramps, chains, and prybars. This was after I had my mill on a trailer frame. We did the same thing, heaved a log (ash) that maxed out my mill, prior to setting it on a trailer. GUT BUSTERS.
I really like sawing the big logs. I have a video called curly maple, way past max size for my mill

It is likely the best of the hardwoods we have to cut here in N America.
Rot resistance, strength, Beauty as well usefulness. It is hard to beat overall other than hard to cut...

I just found your channel. Looks like you have some good content. New sub. I have an LT15 with bolt on wheels. I am finishing up a 30” red oak log that was about 6 ft long. It is all my tractor would pick up. I wish I had a skid steer.
Welcome. If you saw much oak, order the stainless bunk covers for your LT15. They are worth it so you don't get metal stains and to protect paint on the bunks.
@@mcsawmill I got some 3/16 stainless and covered mine a couple of years ago. Really makes a difference.
when i was growing up we had a live edge nut bowl filled up for Christmas like going to a family reunion lol nut was all over the place, and the top cut you made the heavy end would turn that into a nut bowl to

I forgot to ask, did you have to get longer bolts to hang your sawdust bucket? I'm guessing just flipping them won't leave enough length to hold the bucket?
Yes longer bolts and added a second nut. If I can remember will show it in next video.

Thanks for filling in my ignorance! George (MCSawmill) got a whole lot of subscribers from Indonesia all at once, and at the same time, got a lot more female subscribers. So we tease him a bit about the many Indonesian women watching his videos (yes, we know, the two aren't necessarily the same). I think I may pick a common Indonesian name or nickname (Siti? Nina?) and tease him about his relationship with her, like, "Oh, Siti will like that!"
It's not the brand of the sawmill, it is the quality of the sawyer! I have seen plenty of non square cants come off of a Woodmizer. Even seen a few on your videos.
I agree 100%, But it's an 18x18 and his sawmill maxes at a 30" log. That makes it more difficult for him.

I have woodmill and I never got any straight and square like you did. I consider woodmill is for very lite use and small logs. Better than no saw but not close to lt 15
There are a lot of things that can get out of adjustment on a mill. I recently did a full alignment. That helped.

Could try making a lil ramp up to the mill, would prly help a lil with the tippy tip of the skid steer, if ya plan on doing big logs like that in the future 👌🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
I actually have steel ramps for the mill, just haven't tried them yet.

Nice job cutting so accurately. Huge heavy log to handle but you made it come out great. Now tell me WHY does anyone need 18" x 18" x 97" ??? Way to heavy for such a short length, IMHO
It's for a post to hold up some sort of steel structure. I'll video it when they build it.

I can't afford my own sawmill but I can afford a dust broom. So many videos with so few brooms. That is one sweet log though....
we actually did use a broom on it the first day but the second day everything had frozen in place. So I just sawed it.
Curious of what blades are you using on the big white oak
woodmizer 737 blades 7deg .045 thick. I'll be trying their carbide blades in an upcoming video, I believe they will work much better for the really big logs because they have no set. We'll see...
Pretty Oak log, I love getting to cut those big boys too! Have you thought about an I-beem with electric hoist over your mill to load and turn those monster logs. I have loaded and turned 8,000lb+ logs on my mill with my modifidy log trailer from an old propane tank trailer with a 12k winch on it. Thanks for your videos and your time!🤩
I have thought about it but the skidster works and is portable like the mill.
I was wondering if you ever use a metal dectector prior to cutting. 😊
I do sometimes use a cheap detector but I usually forget about it unless I suspect there is metal.
I've done some 30" x 10' with manual labor winches etc
what were you checking in the sawdust bucket at 8:35 ?

What kind blades are you using
woodmizer 737, they are 7deg blades .045 thick
Someone can use a T70. The much extra expense, is worth the extra work. Not no mention your safety.
Its gonna shrink a lot more than 1/8"

That they would. About 10 months ago I cut a. Huge 33" dia cherry, those would make a heck of a table! There's a video here of that log.

I almost never cut trees down on my property unless they fall. What I do is take trees that others have cut down and were going to sent to a landfill or turn into firewood and turn them into something useful. I hate wasting trees, there is such beauty in the wood. Watch my bridge out video, at the end there is a little bit about my trees and how I feel about them.

I don't think there is a debarker option for the LT15. I could get one that goes on the chainsaw but I want the live edge to remain untouched.

thought the saw and motor would complain more with that hard wood.
I listen to the motor and adjust cutting speed accordingly.

I had earplugs in a lot of the time. I have a sheet face mask that I usually use when I have to get close to use the camera (otherwise I get dust in my eyes, very unpleasant and risky). But, yeah, it's a tradeoff. Kids, don't do this at home!

Well I got a mill to keep me active not to produce lumber. Think of it as my version of going to the gym lol...
Plus, you don't have to wear gym CLOTHES! Nothing that shows your barely-there back end. Although, there are those other sawmill videos you watch, with the women in snug clothes...maybe you should try it anyway. (They get a LOT of views.)🤭

I don't cut trees down, I get my logs from tree services and homeowners. I also don't do this for money so you could not be more wrong
