I like how Shen doesn’t sit in his father’s throne but instead throws it out of a window and replaces it with a cannon. It says a lot about his character and how he viewed his parents.

I think this scene highlights something extremely interesting about Shen. The soothsayer is constantly antagonizing him by saying he will be defeated and fail and not to mention all of her trolling. She also plucks a feather off him and rips his robe twice. And yet Shen doesn't kill her or harm her. In a later scene he let's her go to be free and doesn't do anything more with her. I think these interactions with the soothsayer highlight how complex of a villain Shen is and why he is the best and most interesting villain in the franchise.
Good point. Most animated villains would be written as hurting anyone who offends them, but Shen oddly never hurts the Soothsayer no matter how much she intentionally insults or annoys him. By contrast, Shen had zero problem kicking, tackling or even killing Boss Wolf... you know, his own second-in-command who helps to organize and lead his army. Says a lot about the type of people he values and how that shapes the way he treats them.
Well, supplemental material says the Soothsayer practically raised him. He was an extremely sickly child and no one really expected him to live past childhood, let alone be strong enough to take the throne, and his parents were too busy ruling the city to give him the proper attention and care he required, so that job instead fell to the Soothsayer.

The Soothsayer is the only 'family' Shen has.
It is actually confirmed by the creators that Soothsayer used to be Shen’s nanny
Shen is one of the most complex and believable villains I have ever seen.
- He doesn't slap everyone that dares to speak up to him like a Sunday morning cartoon villain, but explains his reasons as to why he wants a pointless detail to be perfect. He does it later in the movie, but he does it with a reason (his underlings missing every shot, aka incompetence).
- He acts menacing against his enemies, "aristocratic" towards his underlings, and goofy towards the only one he considers "family" (even if he doesn't admit it), the Soothsayer.
- He is a villain that actually LISTENS to suggestions, especially his "family", and follows their advice. He has no "I know better than you" mentality.
- Him listening actually makes him reflect on his actions, especially in the scene when the Soothsayer attempts to convince him to stop one last time. In that scene you can clearly see how Shen is reflecting on his actions, and his face at times gives the vibe of "Have I really chosen the right path?", and reaching the conclusion of "It's far too late for that", which you can hear only in the hesitation of his voice.
And that's why I consider him the best villain cartoon character.
It's funny cause I've seen Helluva Boss fans hating on Shen explaining how Stella is a better villain and using Shen as an example of a "bad villain"

I do sometimes wonder if he was given a real chance to basically turn good if he would not only take it, but actually try to do that? Like he's done some awful stuff but because he believed he had to.
Like in the film every person we saw him kill was for a reason. With the three masters he tried to beat them non-lethally first, only when that wasn't possible he went with the lethal option. And then despite the risk the other two posed, he just Jailed Ox and Croc.
And when he was speaking to Po once he was defeated Shen sounded pained when he was talking about what he did to Po.
@@jammygamer8961 Rewatch his final battle with Po. If you pay close attention, you can see him deliberately cutting the lines around him. And, when the cannon begins falling on him, a calm expression comes to his face. He knows that he has lost to Po but can't bring himself to admit it, instead orcherstrating his demise.

She is right. For it is what we do now, in the present, that affects what will be, the future.
Remember the key detail mentioned in the backstory that Shen never replicates, that a Panda would defeat him IF he continued on his current path. He could have stopped the prophecy if he stopped trying to prevent it.

He may of done horrible things but as long as his emotions aren't getting the better of him he seems quite reasonable.
People talk about how Shen was abusing his men but thats because something was going badly wrong in some way. If he was really that bad all the time they would of overthrew him in the 30 years they worked for Shen.

2:40 seeing how Shen treated his Wolf Boss (and the closest thing he possibly had to a friend) made me realize that Shen and the Wolf were the real "warrior of black and white"
White: Shen. Pretty much goes without saying; he sheer sadism and ruthlessness is what led to the Furious 5 and Po bringing him down. Had he just been a good dude, he'd have made no enemies and lived a full life.
Black: The Wolf boss. In the end, The Wolf refused to obey Shen when he ordered to him to kill his own. Had the Wolf been as cruel as shen, he would've fired the Canon in time and killed Po and the others.
It was Shen's lack of compassion and Wolf's hint of compassion that meant death.

I thought of it as shen in the end being covered in soot (black and white) [accidently] splintering the last piece of wood holding the cannon and accepting his death when he could have just moved a bit and won the fight. Hence, defeated by a warrior of black and white

Lord Shen is the best villain in Kung Fu Panda. why? because not only does this character have a cool design and a brilliant voice, but he manages to be both funny and intimidating at the same time. seriously. I didn't think I would ever be intimidated by a peacock of all animals, but this guy is pretty damn evil.

This scene actually shows that Po and Shen are literally 2 sides to the same coin.
They both are kinda goofy in their own ways(some of Shens jokes since his screen time like "Get out of my house"), They both are kinda really picky about the stuff they keep and like (Shen with his cannon and clothes and Po with his toys and the weapons from the jade palace) and with how they sometimes act like kids. But they are also exact opposites with po making peace with his past while Shen just keeps raging with his own past, and with Po primarily using Kung Fu as Shen relies on weapons.

I love how this scene shows Shen still has some sort of connection with the soothsayer later on in the film he threatens his wolf general for saying it’s not the month of the peacock and I want to remind you he threatens him but simply speaking but in this scene the soothsayer 1:36 plucks out one of his feathers and BITES his silk garment or whatever that is and is completely relaxed about along with interrupting him mid sentence and all he does is get angry at her like he’s scolding her instead of just killing her it’s nice seeing him still have some sort of connection even if he doesn’t want to admit he cares for her.
