In this video we discuss how to transition into data science. Today, we’ll be making the switch from economics and examine the good, the bad and the ugly. We’ll answer some of the most important questions running through your mind, like: “Can I”, “Should I” and “How can I” transition into data science from economics. And we’ll discuss the pros and cons before finding the best way to transition into Data Science.
Let’s start with “Can I make the transition into data science?”. The answer here is a resounding “yes!”. Roughly 13% of current data scientists have an Economics degree. For comparison, the most well-represented discipline is data science and analysis, which takes up 21% of the pie. Therefore, Economics is a competitive discipline when it comes to data science.
First, unlike STEM disciplines, social studies help develop great presentational skills which are essential for any data scientist. Through presentations and open discussions, students learn how to present a topic, as well as argue for or against a given statement. These activities result in developing a confident and credible way of showcasing actionable insights. Moreover, most econ majors deeply care about human behavior and response to different stimuli.
Furthermore, Economics frequently intertwines with Mathematics, Finance, Psychology, and Politics. Therefore, an economist’s approach is always meant to be interdisciplinary.
Finally, the technical capabilities of an economist are often quite impressive. An average economist has a good understanding of Machine Learning without really referring to it as such. Linear regressions and logistic regressions are studied in almost all Economics degrees.

I think that would would be harder , you don't do much stats/programming in accounting as you do in economics. If you really want to go for Data Science try a DS bootcamp for beginners, I know a Polisci student who has done it and is currently doing an internship in Data Visualization .Why do you want to go for DS anyway ? I believe this video was meant for economics graduates because they don't have a defined career path ; Accounting however has tons of jobs out there. Unless you discovered a true PASSION for Data science , don't go for it just for the money.

I'm curious what skills should an economics graduate have?
In my opinion, an economics graduate with a basic knowledge of programming skills and SQL can be the best data scientist. The knowledge needed for most machine learning algorithms is taught in econometrics. An economist can see beyond the raw dataset to discover meaningful behavioural and business insights. The challenge, however, is having the desire to develop these It skills.

I think these is a great background , in my casa i got a economics degree and i m starting a master in data science. I would say that our career is better than other because when you finish economics and data science you will have technical and communication skills. Mix both is a plus .

Hi, I'm in desperate need of help, how can I apply for a Master program in Data Science with a Bachelor in Economics when all Universities (at least in Europe) require background knowledge and credits in programming,algorithms, data structures etc and often even more credits in math that a BSc in Economics does not cover? I have the knowledge but can't legally prove it in a way that the University accepts.
I'm in a dead end. I looked up for every possible way to earn credits online, doesn't seem possible unless you re-enroll in a new university program again. My BSc in Economics is totally useless for this purpose... I regret every single day and hour wasted studying to finish this shitty degree. 240 ECTS in total, all straight to the garbage bin, wasted.
