"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on RUclips. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on RUclips, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

"We need a strong Republican party!! :)"
*- Nancy Pelosi*
We DO need two functioning political parties. Unfortunately, one of them has turned into the Donald tRump fellatio club.
But never forget that the magas are the real rinos.
She's an evil POS. Let's not mention the inside trading she's involved in
God save us from this aunt who is loyal to Israel
My hatred for her is off the charts 😡🤢
I honestly don’t even know what to say to this. There has been a running theme of the Democrats not really caring about the people’s interests as much as they should, but this is ignoring your own self interest
The legislature has to be able to you know....actually pass legislation. The MAGA sect of the party (MTG, Boebert, etc) literally halted all legislative activity by threatening to vacate any speaker that brought legislation out for a vote. Democrats offered to temporarily protect Johnson from this in exchange for him allowing votes on legislation.
Hilarious, that you're still playing.
Johnson will actually negotiate. MTG and the rest of the clown caucus want only chaos and total governmental dysfunction. Letting the clowns oust Johnson would just let them achieve their goal of rendering the government nonfunctional. This already happened once. The dem's don't have the numbers to get what they want. They just need to make lemonade.
Uniparty, bro. All disagreements between them are pure theater
@@thedoublebill Good luck. Remember where you are.
You know the house Democrats are getting NOTHING for saving Mike Johnson’s ass
Yes they are. They get more $ for genocide, wars, corporations.
They got money for Ukraine and Israel, which is literally the ONLY thing Dems have cared about for the last 8 months.
Protection of Zionism , it's your politicians no1 priority.
They got a deal over Ukraine, Israel, Gaza and Taiwan funding. Looks like they had a pretty good deal. All after MTG threatened him.
You know he'll still call them baby killing communists. The Dems are so weak and incompetent.
Wasn't there an agreement, though? If Johnson brought the Ukraine spending bill to the floor, then the Dems would save his ass.
We're altering the deal. Pray we don't alter it further.
Republicans wouldn't hesitate to lie to the Democrats if it benefited them. Turnabout is fair play.
@@FNLNFNLNThe timing doesn't play well politically because key bills still need to be passed between now and the election which is still relatively far off. If Democrats remove their protection right before the election the Republican dysfunction will be more politically devastating to Republicans and wouldn't threaten basic legislative functions.
@@TheSpartan3669 Which bills? The budget has been passed for this fiscal year and the foreign aid bill got through. All keeping the House open now does is give them a platform to do McCarthyite investigations into student protesters, violate the first amendment, and fearmonger on the border.

Democrats can’t blame the republicans for not getting anything done if they get control of the house.

Doesn’t the MAGA hate Johnson at this point (and if not now, certainly if they follow through during the vote)? So what goodwill are they really receiving for this move?

Might be a smart move. But then again I don't agree with Kyle in wanting to stop aid to Ukraine or Taiwan, Isreal I understand though.
I mean given Ukraine's average soldier is now in their mid-40s, I agree with Kyle it makes ZERO sense to send another 60 billion dollars to a country that doesn't even have a snowball's chance in hell of beating Russia, which has 10x the population, 10x the military size, and 10x the economy. We could send the entire US Treasury to Ukraine, and it wouldn't fix their lack of soldiers. So, why bother flushing 60 billion down the drain? 60 billion could solve hunger globally for a year or fix our homeless crisis, but no, we have to flush money down the toilet to Raytheon and Lockheed instead.
Money for Ukraine is not good, it's a complete waste of money given Ukraine doesn't have the soldiers and average age is now in the mid-40s. We could send the entire US Treasury and every taxpayer dollar for the next year to Ukraine, and it won't solve their lack of soldiers. Throwing the legislature into chaos this far out of the election when key bills and basic governmental functions have to be passed isn't the win that you think it is. Especially if the GOP replacement ends up being even crazier.
Why do they even pretend to be two parties anymore?
Because they want to keep placating us so we don't move toward revolution.😤

If there's no speaker of the house, then no bills get passed. Biden looks incompetent, and essentially becomes a lame duck president. This would eventually turn into a national security issue if no speaker is elected. Any Republican who voted against Johnson, including MTG, would be barred from the Republican party. They would cancel all her funding and completely dispose of her. The Republicans would become far more united and would return the favor to the Democrats if any party split arose in the future, aka Fetterman.

I'm European so I love the money for Ukraine
I like Ryan Grims’s ideas that they are doing this because Johnson is a terrible fundraiser compared to McCarthy which would let them get majority in 2024 keeping a leader like Johnson guarantee Democrats much majority in November
There is a key fact that is incorrect in this video and that is that the House is one seat away from a Dem Majority. What is true is that the Republicans are one seat above 218 which is usually the amount of seats needed for a majority in the house. However, the Dems are many more seats below 218 so they wouldn’t get the majority if one or 2 Republicans resigned
