- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- The Pioneers is a two-part documentary that follows the USA Rugby Sevens team on their quest to make it to the big time.
America isn’t your traditional rugby powerhouse. In a country full of amazing athletes, rugby is overshadowed by the major American sports of football, basketball and baseball.
But there’s one team out to change that.
The USA Men’s Rugby Sevens team have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Despite their incredible talent, the team are relatively unknown in their own country. As they prepare to host the Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco, the stakes are huge. A win could catapult the team into mainstream sport conversation and set rugby up for years of success. Fail, and the chance could pass them by.
Part one tracks their journey from pre-season training, to traveling around the world on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, through failure and success, to the build-up to San Francisco.
The Pioneers was created by Zoomfiji and produced by Hill + Knowlton Strategies.

I'm a Brit who loves rugby above everything and have craved for the 'US Eagles' to join the world beaters. It will now happen, because of these passionate pioneers and I'm sure the game will soon explode in the America.
Love seeing the USA are part of the Rugby family. The game that brings cultures together. Much love from NZ.
Hell yeah brotha 🤘🏻
Same from UK guys.

I fell in love with usa rugby watching Perry Baker for the first time man he's fast yes the sky's the limit as far as usa rugby it's like soccer and American football mixed together it's a very fun game America will only get better with more resources put in go team usa!!!!!!!!
They all seem like great professionals and their coaches are breeding a great rugby mentality among them. Big things to come for them
Hopefully one day they can also reach the very elite level in 15s rugby too. Well done U.S.A
Good luck Guys! What you talk about Rugby is what fans like me see on the field.
Glad you liked it Romeo - we're wishing the Eagles all the best for the future
America has the potential to be the best in the world, from New Zealand they are an awesome team.
My brother went to the US with Paeroa West in 1976 and played a few games. In 1980, I played against Tri-Counties from California, in Tauranga. They've come a long way.
Im Fijian but i admire your team and passion for the game
As a Fijian... America is just on the right path...
Love it. Rugby is brilliant get everyone involved!
Great passion brothers, from New zealand
Watching this video after watching the Fijian 7's video explains much as to why Fijian 7's RULE
Respect to America for getting into rugby
Much Respect and love from NZ
Great stuff guys..hope to see alot of you people help develop the game more and you'll become Great roll models and coaches for the future of the game in America..from New Zealand 🇳🇿
The giants r waking up... Watch out, I'm from Fiji🇫🇯 no. 1 in Sevens rugby... Looking at America wow!! America can become the greatest #underdogs America🇺🇸
Only just seen this...from. New Zealand get the states moving you guys can do great things
USA have more of a chance in 7s than 15s because most countries take 15s more serious than 7s.
yes they can in my point of view I think USA should give they 15-side rugby to NCAA and open the women's pro-rugby or WMLR they yes it could happen but that my point of view
Hell yes! 🇺🇸🏉
Thanks for the comment. Look out for part two which will follow the team's journey at the Rugby World Cup Sevens.
Wish all the best to the USA eagle 🦅. Win that World cup.
Thanks for the comment. Go Eagles!
Because samoa cant
its a challenge for you to beat tonga or samoa how you going to beat the top 8 nz, Ireland, wales, England, austraila, south Africa, scotland and france
I just wish these sevens rugby players play in the 15-side rugby for club and country
7's is a training game played to practice cutting lines and tracking runners. Good to see the USA getting into Rugby but focus on 15s! That's the big boy sport.
Kev Bot 7's is the best place to start for them
Such a great team. I'm a fan.
Sometimes it's just getting the younger generation involved,to love the sport like they do to NFL and Basketball,USA might not dominate in the 15s,but they sure working.
whenever USA decides to focus on rugby it will dominate, we are the sleeping giant!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gridiron was born from Americans thinking Rugby was too violent
You’re a giant because of huge population. That’s nothing to be proud of
Bring it on...NZ is waiting for you...
Paul A,youre right bring em on.They will never dominate rugby whether they take it serious or not.America is totally overrated in sports for their population. They cant even beat NZ at softball and NZ took the Americas cup off them.Theyre even struggling to come up with a better heavyweight boxer than New Zealands Joseph Parker and they think they can dominate rugby haha, dream on.
Thanks for the comment, the Rugby World Cup Sevens is only the beginning for the USA for sure
What does it take to be on the team? Not saying I’m the best player but I got heart 💯💯
Those who doubt that USA would dominate rugby if they focused on it are outside their minds. Keep in mind that a dude like Perry Baker who is one of the best rugby 7s players ever play, only went to a division II school for football.... America is full of athletes like baker.
Yea thats rugby sevens its totally different theres no money in it, rugby stars play union. Its like dominating canadian football and saying see he dominates the nfl. Perry baker is too skinny and weak physically to play rugby. Also nobody doubts the US would produce great players its a huge country the US population is bigger than all nations that play rugby combined.
Mo S he could've played 15's on the wing, there are people skinnier than him in tier 1 nations in that position
@@DJ-ce3hq yeah but they have skill and situational awareness to read a game, if u just play 7s u not going to get all that, 15 man rugby is the big boy version of rugby, u can't just go from 7s to 15 it's a totally different game
ashish d it’s not totally different. I’ve seen people like him in sevens move to 15 a side and play well. Not the best, but and amazing all round player but still very good running and attacking Rugby
@@DJ-ce3hq u do realize the 15 man rugby is 80 minutes a game, to be part of a 15 man team u have to have the whole package, can Baker tackle does he have the endurance to last 80 minutes, can he read play and defend, by me watching him all I can see is speed nothing else, he would need alot of work to make it in 15s it's not just about speed
Only in America.
Mike friday is the best coach in the world
This best
Welcome US, to the game played by large part of the world, unlike American Football
Crazy America has the world's best athletes but when it comes to rugby our best players aren't playing rugby.. They're playing American Football and Soccer..
They already changed rugby...they called it Gridiron #historylesson
Thanks for watching Andrew
Get the NFL player to play Rugby now !!
When Americans call sevens rugby, pure comedy
As long as the sleeping giant doesn't become woke, we're all good!
where has the usa changed rugby its 7s a whole different format where speed is king its that simple. they say the u.s is the sleeping giants because of their athletes yet s.a .england .wales .scotland.ireland . australia have more athletes than new zealand in most sports yet nz still punch above their weight . england alone has 1 million registered rugby players and still can not beat southern hem teams on a regular basis
Not really, how many registered players aren’t where you should look. In fact, England have less than 1m registered players, not 1m. But they do have over 2m unregistered players that played last year. But that’s still not a good place to look. Where to look is High School Males playing the sport. I’m New Zealand there are less and less boys playing at High School every year and their teams are strong weaker compared to England and South Africa. In the past NZ had around the most High Schoolers playing and now thy have less and less playing every year. Rugby has been being governed horribly in NZ and it’s starting to make large changes. Schools pulling out of 1st XV comps because they don’t have enough money, Schools stacking their teams. Things like that can’t happen in NZ because it’s too small of a country for people to go around making the sport impossible to play at High School unless you’re rich or luckily get into an all Boys School. Most people these days in NZ are moving to Basketball or Volleyball because of the more even competition
@@DJ-ce3hq v
Why are you calling them pioneers?
They are only referencing the guys in this video as 'Pioneers' in order to grow it's appeal for the game. So those who make it in future representative teams in years to come, can see who came before them. For younger generations, I know for me, I grew up wanting to be Joe Stanley, Frank Bunce or John Kirwan.
Bwaaahahaha.Americans.. rugby😃😩
nobody cares about sevens, concentrate on building a decent union side, and maybe the rest of the rugby world will take you seriously
the green man, youre right 15s is bigger, better and more popular than 7s.Its the real deal.
"nobody cares about sevens"?? - Speak for yourself! You are talking utter nonsense. I guess that's why it's an Olympic sport, because "nobody cares about it"!1 Your comment is idiotic.
You may like to know that sevens is physically far more demanding than 15s. Over a two day period the team could play six games each lasting at least 14 minutes (every half usually goes over by at least a minute), which gives a total of 84 minutes - more likely well over 90 minutes. This is more than one game of 15s which is just played once in a weekend. Furthermore, in sevens you touch the ball more, have to tackle and run more and cover more ground (due to fewer people to pass to). Just stop talking BS. Thanks.
7's is a good place to start
USA welcome to the greatest game of all,a real mans game.
I second that statement!
@soflo23 ,well I'm really only comparing it to gay soccer and all the armour they use in American football.
@soflo23 ,well obviously you haven't been reading a lot of the comments I've seen in many posts and it's nothing more than banter, tit for tat so don't take it so serious my friend. What you say is fair but if I see a comment I don't like I will always reply and I may come across as arrogant at times but it is what it is just don't take it so serious.Im not a fan of American football but it's way better than gay soccer lol.
@soflo23 ,haha I think thats just in our psyche,a rather macho bunch of supporters but believe me soccer gets it even worse.Hey enjoy your game cheers.
@@Trajan2401 Combat sports are the only real mans sports, everything else is pussy shit.
They've built a solid foundation with the 7's which has gained more popularity due to the speed and simplicity compared to 15's, once they convert over (and with time) they will become a powerhouse..!
As a Brit, I'm excited to see the American's progress and progress in rugby. Keep it up guys.
Many of those guys should now be experienced enough and knowledgeable enough to make the shift to the nations 15 man squad, they're definitely worth it now I think.
I'd like to see more NFL players or guys with NFL backgrounds take up this game, representing their country in both the Olympics and the World Cup should be a big enough lure.
I have no doubt they will be great potential for the US sports team and I can't wait see them grow in World Cup. Good luck and hope you enjoy the game. From the UK 🇬🇧 😊👍
I think the USA are very similar to England in their style of play.
One day I'll be an Eagle too !
Work hard like these players, and anything is possible. Thanks for the comment, and go Eagles!
Perseus SM,good on you, welcome to the greatest game of all.A real mans game.
Go on bro. I hope you do
Rugby isn’t just about building a world champion team, but about about building world class gentlemen…👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I hope the US hosts either the 2027 or 2031 RWC. That do for rugby in the US but the 1994 World Cup did for soccer in America!!
I will say this for the Eagles, it takes guts to step on the pitch knowing you're going to take a beating!
@DidaLowG Like I wrote, it takes guts.
"Take a beating"? As at the time of writing this, the Eagles are top of the World Series Table, having taken two silvers. Yeah, they got beaten twice in finals, but they win far more than they lose. Other teams must be beginning to feel nervous about meeting the USA. By the way, I say all this as a non-American, so I am not just spouting out of patriotic pride.
@@algraham7177 I can relate, I'm actually Danish so I'm not Really in the fight either. You're right, the Eagles are very good at Sevens, but I was refering to Rugby Union, the more prestigious of the two, wherein Team USA have been less succesful.
@@kristianbrandt3012 then maybe you should make that comment on a video that has to do with XVs.
@@cerberus2654 Perhaps. As it happens it's my prerogative to comment where ever I want, on what ever I want.
Keep your shape and play for each other boys!!!!! Go for the gold, this is your house, your time, your RWC!!!!
Go Eagles!
Wananavu
Daniel Klingelsmith,maybe next time but......
Amazing, and what an inspiration to all the young ruggers out there! Let's take it home USA!
Thanks for the comment Terri. The USA team is a great example to the next generation.
Terri Lewis, sorry to disappoint you but NZ dominates rugby and once again proved it.America has a long way to go and even so will never dominate rugby.NZ will always dominate rugby even though NZ doesnt take 7s as serious as 15s but even so NZ still won easily even though that wasnt even our top team.
Kupa Cronk, thank you for your comment...there was no disappointment here. I am a fan of the sport in general. I am well aware of what a power house NZ is in the game of rugby especially 15's. However my opinion on USA rugby is coming from a mother of a developing rugby player. He has been playing since the age of 10 and and is now 17. So to watch the sport grow here in the US is a great thing. The USA has come a long way and our youth in general is just getting introduced to the great sport of rugby. Congratulations to all the teams that came out to compete.
Terri Lewis, good luck to your son and i hope he makes the eagles or the USA 7s side one day.I see rugbys the fastest or one of the fastest growing team sports in the US now.Welcome to a real mans game. Most rugby fans prefer 15s especially in NZ,7s probably wouldnt even make it into our top 5 most popular sports but well done to the mens and womans team for winning the cup.Id like to see the US improve especially in the 15s game because that is the bigger and more popular form of rugby.Have a good day.
Terri Lewis
England won world cup 2003 too. NZ are beatable. Wales, Ireland, England are good sides ..
The ranking as of now is:
New Zealand
Ireland
Wales
England
Australia
South Africa
I'm an All Black Spring Boks Wallabies Fan As long as USA show their Respect by giving These teams the best game they will ever experience Win or Lose they can from that point on Stand Tall it only takes one game just one game but that one game will demand everything you got Every other game won or lost was just a practice game for this one game All any Rugby fan can ask of All their Incredible Rugby Athletes is play the best game of your lives for your Nation your people your family and never forget your Rugby Fans through out the World
Definitely you're a diehard Rugby fan! You have obliterated all manners of punctuation!
And USA just recently finished 2nd on the HSBC World Sevens Series Standings! Well done guys!
Hope to join the likes of Baker 11 soon🙏🙏🙏
Man at 5:20 , is that a cricket ground written over the walls , that phenomenal, isn't it ? 🏏🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟❤❤❤❤
Awesome video. When does part 2 come out?
Glad you enjoyed it Jonathan! Part 2 of The Pioneers will follow after the Rugby World Cup Sevens - stay tuned for more details!
What is the song in the 12:00
Good players; wow Baker your amazing fast 😟
It's only a matter of time. USA will dominate this sport
Yeah sure in 100 years maybe by then MZ will dominate BB aswell 🤣🤣🤣
Stick to your pads ladies 🤣🤣🤣
All the best for the tournament. It'll be hue if USA win.
Thanks for the comment Mike. Wishing the USA all the best at the Rugby World Cup Sevens.
ttps://www.world.rugby/olympics/history?lang=en
Now this link above is a record of Rugby in Olympics since it's inclusion in the early 1900's - take particular notice of U.S.A. becoming the Olympic Rugby Champions in 1920 & 1924. Of course the competition back then was nowhere near what it is today, but the record stands as fact... and the best thing about facts is, is that they are undeniable.
So before anyone else hops on here to discredit & be critical of the efforts of U.S.A trying their hand at rugby, because you think being from a rugby nation - you simply think you know better.... just let that sink in.
I live in rugby mad NZ. Born and raised in central Auckland during the 60's. People should be glad the game is growing on their shores, because Rugby isn't even the biggest sport.. nor is it the richest sport in the world. The biggest & richest sport in the world is Football!! others known this as soccer.
there is no doubt in my mind that America will have its day soon in the sunshine of world rugby. And remember the greatest moments in this game involve support. That's rugby. Look at Scott Barrets try against Sth Africa a couple of days ago in the RWC . As he cruised in under the post there were two other All Blacks right with him, in support always. that's how the All Blacks roll.
I think the original comment is meant to state how 7s is gaining popularity within the USA. And it's because of the men who played the game for the US from the start.
USA you are overdue by at least two decades, now you here please please stay.
Are you going back to Buffalo or not?
I think the world is finally taking notice, the GIANT is waking up slowly.
What is the song in the opening and ending?
Also, great film! Excited for part two!
Tyler Manu so far I found David Guetta with sia: flames. I think that's the original but I don't know who is doing the cover for this. I prefer this version over sia
Thanks for the comment Tyler - we're excited for part two also!
Thanks for the comment Tyler - the song is called Let It Rain On Me by James Pickering and Matthew Clark
Sorry America, you have a long way to go.NZ now hold the RWC in 15s and 7s with both the men and woman.NZ rules rugby and dont fear anyone especially America, bring em on.NZ dont even take 7s seriously and that wasnt even our top mens team yet we still won easily.
What Kupa Cronk is trying to say is USA is very talented. And we are very proud of our teams for winning the world cup in 15s and 7s. And we know that rugby is a fun game and we hope all countries will enjoy playing it.
Thanks for watching Kupa
Thank you Frank. What Kupa has forgotten is that arrogance should have no place in any Rugby arena.
These brothers are humble and passionate, rugby fams world wide ,from New Zealand
Good luck England I waiting
It won't be any good until they get better at the 15 a side 7s is okay but it's the 15 a side that really matters
Around the world take my. Word for that as I am a 66 year old Welsh rugby fan so I have seen it all
