  • Bulgaria is a country often overlooked, but extremely interesting! It could be seen as the most historically significant country in all of the Slavic world, being the birthplace of the Cyrillic script and Old Church Slavonic. Although modern-day Bulgaria is not as important as it once was, it is still a great country with beautiful landscape and fascinating culture, that's on the right path to becoming a tourist hotspot and economically stable nation.

е. Tsardom is not equal to Kingdom.

I read this through google translate and I think I kind of understand it. Thanks for the clarification! You're right about the language barrier with empire/tsardom/kingdom. Let me give ya a better translate *Because google translate sucks*.
"I may not be a expert in this area but I would like to tell the Bulgarians that say we were not a empire. That is because in the english literature is said that The First/Secound Bulgarian Czarsdom/Tzarsdom is actually The first/secound Bulgarian Empire. Thats because Tsarsdom isn't used that much in the English language because on its base it is a slavic word. The important thing is that Tsarsdoms isn't equal to Kingdom. The Kingdom is a bit lower as a title than the Tsardom ( Because the western nations were under the control of the pope and the papacy at the point of the creating of the titles was weaker than Byzantium ). After the bulgarian patriarchy gained and "independece" from the patriarchy at Constantinopole the Bulgarian ruler wasn't under any authority. I wanted to note that some people already told that the word Czarsdom comes from the word Ceaser. The title of Emperor ( Ceaser ) could be only used by the Roman emperor. And after we saw that Ceaser = Emperor = Tzar = Basileus ( Tzar being the slavic word for Basileus ). After the Bulgarian leader Simeon The Great became stronger than the Basileus of Byzantium he proclaimed his title as Tzar of bulgarians and romans ( The greeks still were thinking they were romans at that point ) which made the Bulgarian Empire. That is why Tzar Kaloyan wanted from the pope his title to be Tzar not King. It was not because he was in love of the storys for tzar Simeon or something it was because he wanted the title of Emperor. Also the whole title of Tzar is strange because it is a word for basileus which gets stranger because Byzantium actyaly gave the title of tzar to Simeon's son Peter which just makes it stanger because they defacto gave the title of Ceaser to the bulgarian Tzar. Soo ye it is just a mess...

My dear Bulgarians, please dont forget to remind Russians that they speak a dialect of your language, and that their bigotry and ambition to rule over all other slavs, and Russinize them will not work. When Bulgaria was celebrating their anniversary of being freed from the Ottoman Empire, Bulgarian president thanked all of the slavic and non slavic nations that took part in freeing Bulgaria as part of the Russian Empire. The Russian Patriarch that came to this occasion, snapped in anger, yelling at the Bulgarian delegates that they should remember that it was Russians alone that freed them and they should not rewrite history. :). This pathetic excuse for a country with never ending imperial ambitions has the nerve to invade my country and kill my relatives and fellow slav countrymen yet again after what it did to us in the 20th century. Remember that Ukraine is an Orthodox slavic nation, Russia only cry about Orthodox brotherhood when it suits them, they dont care for it. As u can see they have no problem killing slavs, for they are not!

Its fact and there are many evidences, literature and ofcourse personal memories prooving there was forced change of indentity. Bulgarians (about 80% of the population) there had to agree otherwise were killed or kicked.
After the communism kicked in Yugoslavia started program of creating new nation out of these people once again forced. Now macedonians are very offensive against Bulgaria and there is anti-bulgarian politic. So do you think its fair? Greetings from Greece neighbors! Beautiful, educative video, Bulgaria has a rich and respectful history, worth to visit it and see all this beautiful and historical places that they are mentioned in the video. I recommend you to visit Veliko Tarnovo the great medieval capital of the 2nd bulgarian empire, maybe the most beautiful city of the country. Plovdiv is one of the ancients cities in Europe and this year's Cultural Capital. Lot of archeological sites and monuments, in fact, bulgaria is in the 3rd position in Europe with regard to visitable archeological sites after Italy and Greece. I love Bulgaria, I've been almost everywhere! The nature is amazing and the capital Sofia is one of the most upcoming cities in Europe.

If you are talking about the Slavic tribes who were allied with the Bulgars, they have names, The serbian tribe is not one of them. Serbs are just one of the MANY slavic tribes that settled on the Balkans, just like Croats.
In fact your origin might be Bulgarian, considering the entire Shopluk and Torlak regions (today Eastern Serbia) were ethnically Bulgarian up until the 19th century.
Your alphabet is Bulgarian , created by Bulgarians in the capital Veliki Preslav in medieval Bulgaria. Even your only emperor Tsar Dushan was half Bulgarian his mother was Bulgarian and his wife too. Not that you had an actual empire, it lasted only 25 years.

      Filip Colovic
A peculiar Slavic-Mediterranean gene admixture is in the core of the Bulgarian nation, a new Bulgarian-Italian genetic study has revealed.
Gene probes of 855 Bulgarians, including individuals from the country's Islam population, have been gathered and compared with other European nations, Professor Draga Toncheva from the Sofia-based Medical University has explained in an interview for the Bulgarian National Radio.
The results have failed to show any Turkic connection in the Bulgarians nation's genesis, contrary to popular beliefs.
Croatians, Poles, Ukrainians and other Slavic nations are closest to Bulgarians, according to the study. However, Bulgarians are a peculiar type of Slavs, since they also have Mediterranean genes, head of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences' Microbiology Institute Angel Galabov has pointed out.
The Bulgarians' "peculiarity" has probably been the result of their contacts with ancient Thracians, scientists reckon.
The place of origin of the Ancient Bulgarians is most likely Eastern Iran, a group of anthropologists and scientists claimed in 2010 after an exploratory trip to the Persian lands.
Long-established theories about the making up of the Bulgarian ethnicity state that the Bulgarian nation was formed through the mixing of the Bulgarians with the local population made up of Slavs and some Thracians. Before 1989 the Bulgarians were believed to have been a minor tribe of Turkic origin.

One thing I want to point out is that Simeon I adopted the title of "Tzar" and all bulgarian rulers after him called themselves such. Albeit considered empires, the first and second bulgarian states are called "tzardoms" and their rulers "tzars". Before that (with exception of Boris I) the title to the monarch was khan.

    • @Ghipoli
      @Ghipoli  6 лет назад +5

It's just that the title "emperor" holds a different meaning than "king". For all intents and purposes "Tzar" and "King" are interchangeable in bulgarian where "Emperor" is a ruler who rules over more than one nation and this is true only for a handful of bulgarian "Tzars". Great video overall.

    Proven facts about Bulgaria
There are many more facts but I can't write them here which I regret..
    1.The oldest country in Europe
Bulgaria is one of the oldest/ancient country in Europe. It is also the only country that has never changed its name since its foundation in 681.
2.Bulgaria is the homeland of the Cyrillic alphabet and the Slavic script.
The Cyrillic alphabet is Bulgarian, not Slavic.
Today it can be assumed that when it comes to the celebration of May 24, Bulgarian society understands that this is the Day of the Bulgarian script. It is identical with the Cyrillic alphabet, which was created and spread among other Slavs by Bulgaria. It is unique and different from other graphic forms among the Orthodox Slavs. It has been used by hundreds of Bulgarian authors who have created thousands of works that have remained in the national and world literary treasury. For all these reasons, the correct and historically correct definition of the holiday celebrated on May 24 is - Day of Bulgarian Literature, Education and Culture.
Among the countries that use the Cyrillic alphabet are Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, Belarus, Macedonia and Mongolia and Kazakhstan. Until the 19th century the Romanians also used Cyrillic script, but due to political reasons the Latin script came in its place.
3.Bulgarian phenomena are the greatest in the world, for example: Baba Vanga,Slava Sevryukova,Peter Dunov,Pregodobna Stoina
4.The oldest orthodox church is the Bulgarian
In Bulgaria is the oldest Slavic Orthodox Church. It was recognized as an independent church in 870 AD.
    5. The most accurate calendar in the world
In 1976, UNESCO declared the Proto-Bulgarian calendar to be the most accurate in the world.
    6. The world's first digital computer
John Vincent Atanasoff, the inventor of the first digital computer in 1937, was of Bulgarian origin. He is the son of the Bulgarian immigrant Ivan Atanasov.
    7. Bulgaria on three seas
Before it fell under Ottoman rule, our country was twice as big. It rested on three seas - the Aegean (White Sea), the Adriatic and the Black Sea.
8.Macedonia is Bulgarian land. Macedonians are Bulgarians and they speak the same language this is a nation divided purely politically.

One quick issue. I notice it every time any foreigner talks about bulgarian history- Bulgars were not turkic. There's already genetic studies that show the bulgars had less than 15% turkic genes, instead the majority was east asian aka mongoloid.
The thing with the turkic descent is because of the inaccuracy of historic sources and it seems most historians wouldn't even think about searching for genetic evidence.

    Im bulgarian
U should have said about how Basil II The Bulgar slayer captured the whole bulgarian army (of 20k while other 10k are killed in the battle of Klyuch)
These 20k were blinded and every 1 of 100 was leaved with only 1 eye so he could lead the remaining 99 soldiers
Samuil, after seeing this, recieved a heart attack, followed by decline of the bulgarian throne until its fall 1018.

so what ? he should have also said how we Bulgarians wiped out the entire 80.000 Byzantine army and made cup from Nickiforos's skull !
why always talk about Basil II ? let's talk about Bulgarian victories which are not few
      he should have mentioned that
WE Bulgarians were the ONLY people on Planet Earth to defeat Basil II in battle ! it took Basil 30 years to conquer Bulgaria 30 !!! STRONG BULGARIANS

To the fellow Bulgarians who are saying that we are not turks, turkic and turks is not the same thing. The turkic tribes are a group of people originating in central Asia (Huns, Pechenegs, Mongols, Bulgars etc). The Turkish people (turks) also have some connection to this group of people but they are not the same thing
