He's not talking about losing due to anxiety, he's talking about the anxiety itself. As someone who has struggled with severe anxiety most of my life, I can completely understand why he quit top-level competitive chess. It isn't about the mistakes you make due to the anxiety, or losing. It's about the fact that the anxiety that's experienced is so intensely unpleasant and upsetting that it makes something you're supposed to be passionate about an absolute nightmare, and it becomes extremely distressing to your mental health. I completely understand his decision to bow out of those situations. Ultimately, if something is having that big of a negative affect on you, you have to choose between the thing you're doing and your own health

Levy, I think this problem comes from hyper self-awareness. It's easier to progress when you don't understand the difference between them and you. "Them" being the greats. It's easier to climb a mountain when you're completely unaware of how high it is and you just assume it's only a few more meters. I totally get the anxiety that actually knowing the difference brings, been there many times. *So how did I get rid of the performance anxiety?* I told myself, "Ok, that mountain's tall but all I really have to do is keep reaching up. There's literally no other way through it." The anxiety dropped off. I stopped caring about the gap. I stopped caring about how long it'd take. I stopped caring about slipping backwards. I just accepted my fate. I've decided I'm on the mountain. I'm climbing. This is how it works. You reach. You reach. You reach. Take a break when you need. Reach. Oh shit. It's the top. No stress needed.

    • @mrsenxo

I used to compete at a high level in a sport and found myself in a very similar position. I wasn't competitive at the highest international level so that type of competition was fine but just below that, when I had an actual chance to win, I had paralyzing nerves. Everything would shutdown and my body would go into flight mode. I had to tell my coach that under no circumstances would he let me resign from a particular competition and when I made it to the semis, I begged him to let me forfeit. He didn't and I got bronze. It's not joke. I did that sport for 15 years before I had to call it quits, it was just too much for me to deal with and it had become too overwhelming, mental help would take too long to be effective. I know what your going through and definitely don't recommend continuing to force yourself to do it unless you know of a way you can resolved it. I didn't and I can't look at the sport anymore.

I'm in my mid-thirties and for the first time have begun to seriously try to get better at chess. I randomly came across your Wired interview and have been compulsively watching your videos ever since. Aside from my 'Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess' book, you've been my main -- in fact, only -- [online] chess 'mentor.' Not just because you're great at the game, but due to the clarity, insight, humor, and wit you bring to your videos.
And so it breaks my heart to see this video so shortly after becoming a fan of yours. Of course you need to do what's best for your peace of mind, and I don't think chess has to be played at the highest levels to be enjoyed, but this feels to me like a bump in the road and not the end of it, or so I hope.
It's okay and sometimes good and necessary to take a step back from something, and maybe some time away will help rekindle what brought you to it in the first place. Or maybe blitz just isn't a good fit for you (which I only learned about from this video!). Not trying to preach, just hate to see such a talented and charismatic player with so much potential step away from the board, and I hope you'll one day return. Thanks for all your hard work.

My anxiety is next level when it comes to Chess, and I think it comes down to the fact that I take a long time to consider each move. It's not the fact that I have to take that long, sometimes I just analyze positions multiple times to make sure it is an optimal move. When playing Blitz, or basically anything besides Classical or Rapid, I feel like my anxiety gets so bad because there is a time limit that seems to move faster than I anticipate, and the feeling of being rushed makes me super anxious and prone to silly mistakes. I used to think that I was a terrible Chess player since I could only physically take playing Classical or Rapid games, but recently I've realized that you don't have to be the fastest, or the most forward thinking to be good, everyone has their own unique talents and style of play and it's all about believing your preparation for each encounter and trusting that you will put your all in every match. You are 1000X better than I'll probably ever be in my life, please don't allow your nerves to make you forget that you are one of the best on the platform and millions of aspiring chess players teacher.

If you learn to navigate the workings of your mind like you recognize chunks of chess strategy and act accordingly (lovingly, that is), chances are your anxiety will take a back seat. I dont think you should quit, you are just letting your anxiety control you at that point. If you love chess that much, keep playing. Eventually as you continue to be put in those situations your anxiety will lessen. Increase confidence, decrease anxiety. But if you quit for the very specific reason of your anxiety, you are doing to yourself in life what you did to yourself in that game. Dont check mate yourself. Reassess and overcome. We all have faith in you. Think of all the triumphs you may loose out on as a result. They are worth more than any blunders.

This is a good faith message, but pushing people into suffering further from mental health issues is not a healthy idea. Levy obviously made a great choice when he retired, his rating shot up and his chess playing improved as his stress level went down. Maybe he'll come to a better mental place about it, but maybe not, and that has to be fine too. Like your heart is in the right place but don't bust into peoples long-fought life choices to say "well I don't think you should quit, you should question every conclusion you've come to about your own well being"

I know a lot of competitive people that suffered from anxiety due to self imposed pressure. There are ways to overcome these kind of psychological effects but they require the person to invest time in learning, practicing, and integrating such methods into their daily life.
Still, if a person feels they are done with competing than there is nothing wrong with that. Can always play chess as a fun game with no pressure.

The point is that for his life as it is, the time involved is simply not worth it.

But if even a part of him still wants that dream than I think he ows it to himself to give it his best. He is still relatively young and has a great career ahead of him if he really threw himself at it.

  • @tactrix1h

I'm going to tell you the reason why you have such high anxiety over chess. It's because no matter how many people claim "it's just a game", It's not just a game. When you play anything you're hardwired to WANT to excel, and in chess that's actually much MUCH more emphasized than in other games. Because unlike other games you are starting off 100% equal on the board. Which means unlike any other given game, in this game you can't claim that some outside force has made you lose, you have to take the full brunt of the loss yourself. And it really does fuck with your morale, and with your self confidence.
You better than most understand that chess is an unforgiving game, you can be on top of the world today and get shattered and crumble tomorrow. This knowledge is in your mind, constantly as you keep playing. However it gets even worse, because unlike other games since you always start even, you are EXPECTED to improve with time. And the pressure of having played for so long and not improving as much as you want or expect to is even more anxiety. All of this on top of the fact that as you keep playing your brain is overloading with a staggering amount of knowledge, positions, and strategies.
If you wonder why people stop playing chess or lose their mind, this is why. It's an enormous amount of compound pressure that gets significantly worse the longer you play.

People who are seen as winners are more attractive and people naturally want to get close to them and they get more benefits. People opinion of you determine how they treat you and we as humans do not live alone so people opinion does matter.
If you play chess for fun, it just a game, if you play competitive chess, you are trying to be better than other people. People will judge you based on that.

If you can get yourself to not care and just play chess for the beauty of the game, you'd reach GM quicky :) I'm absolutely sure you can, and I suggest trying to talk about the issue with a psychotherapist. I'd love to see you get that prestigious GM title, and it'd be the greatest redemption story for you aswell. I've studied psychology and I'm sure that all you need is a different perspective on things, which you can absolutely achieve! You made it to IM, you can make it to GM, it's just that last obstacle, and it might look like it's a huge and insurmountable one, but breaking that barrier, launching yourself through it, that'd be a feeling of fulfillment that will empower you a lot and give you not only tons of confidence, but overall quality of life, to know that you fought against your inner demons and won. And even if you lose, even if you don't succeed? What is there to lose? Yes, it might be a struggle, but we could argue life itself is.
