  • After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, many of Port-au-Prince's displaced population moved to an area called Morne L'Hopital. This mountain range starts near Petion-ville and ends near the sea in Carrefour. The population of the area has more than doubled in the last 7 years as more and more Haitians are choosing to move to the capital in search of opportunity.
Unfortunately, this area where they have chosen to live is not safe for many reasons. The hillsides are too steep to build on, meaning at any time a landslide could wipe out hundreds of homes. Most of the trees have been cut down to make charcoal and build homes, leaving the area especially vulnerable to erosion, landslides and flash flooding. There is no infrastructure to support the thousands of people squatting in this area. No clean water, no public sanitation services, and no hospitals.
