A real friend would also want to see you have happiness too. But you’re so called friend is the typical selfish kind he knew you constantly mention in your financial misfortune so he used his material and friendship to bind you to a contract you’d have to die to. If anyone dies, truly loves you and knew you could of benefit from their connections they would certainly give that upper hand to you knowing it would help you rise up. Yet your “friend” continued to bind up your one true opportunity to happiness knowing you had one single upper hand from him that he could not buy. He obviously saw how easily you could get the attention of women and could not handle that and knew he would finally lose to you. Sometimes people like to be your friend so long as they’re not losing. You might of took your friendship seriously but your friend took his wins seriously.
Also you shouldn’t have agreed to make an outrageous promise. You literally gave up the opportunity to be with your secret lover 3x. By the third time you should of stood your ground and asked for a blessing to marry his wife since he died. You may gloat in your loyalty and misfortune but you seem to lack in courage/confidence and making sound decisions. I suggest you take these lessons as a way to do things accordingly, value your capabilities and physical leverages. You can choose to have things respectfully if done right. Are you courageous enough to do that.
The friend was not selfish. His friend helped him a lot. The friend even told him to date the girl since the girl didn't like the friend. However, he kept refusing, and that's why the friend married the girl.

I totally agree. Why would he allow another man to have her and not his best friend when he knew the friend and the wife love each other. Sad his life ended so soon. They were so young, making promises as though they would live forever, the friend fully expected to return. If the friend was a soldier and was off to the battlefield knowing he may not return, he would have released his wife to him to take care of her, knowing he took her away from him, whom she loved more. Even after the friend's unexpected death, the smart and practical thing to do would have been to ask his friend for forgiveness and take his friend's young widower to be his wife.
