    Cyril C is absolutely brilliant in this: that mixture of pride in his work, apprehension and plain fear as he knows he is dealing with a monster…

      In the book he states he keeps a ledger of all the appointments, and should he go missing or DOA the Jackal would be his last noted gun client. The forger tries to leverage his position . Blackmail gets him a lethal karate chop to the neck /Left dead folded into a steamer trunk .......................alas his luck he fucked the duck..........

      He's dealt with a lot of "monsters" in the past. It's referred to in the book. That's why the Jackal doesn't kill him, he's a "solid" armorer.

    I think there is a misconception from watching the movie that the Jackal respected the gunsmith and therefore didn't murder him like he did the forger. In the book, it is clear that he thought of killing him, but didn't because the gunsmith kept records of schematics, appointment times, etc that could be released if he died. So he didn't kill the guy because it could compromise his mission. The scene ends so abruptly that I suspect that there was a conversation alluding to the above but they just decided to cut it out, probably because it would make the forger's fate more predictable since he made the mistake of assuring the Jackal that only he knew where the negatives were stashed and nobody came up to his room - oopsie. So gunsmith had insurance to prevent a customer bumping him off, while the forger didn't but the cut implies professional respect for one and not the other.
    It is also notable that the crappy remake The Jackal did something similar, flipping the gunsmith and forger around but otherwise playing out in a similar way.

      that remake was aweful indeed

    • @bobjoe1593
      @bobjoe1593 6 дней назад +4

      The cut makes it make more sense if you think about it. An old professional craftsman in a field where confidence and secrecy are crucial would know how to operate and both that it is poor taste and unprofessional (and bad for your health) to lean too far in to implying that you have dirt and leverage over the other guy, and they also would know by the nature of what they do that the other guy always has dirt and leverage over them since theyre doing dirt together. And rule 1 or 2 of being an arms salesman is not to get shot with the merchandise. From the Jackals side, being able to get weapons means keeping a network of people, and it would be hard to keep that network of people if you either wipe them out or pick up a reputation as a literal backstabber. And the forger was definitely trying to extort him and go back on the agreed upon price... once somebody establishes that their mind works on blackmail and threats, even if you abide by their current demands you know that any time they have a need they might try leaning on you... there can never be trust from that moment forward

    • @travisbickle4307
      @travisbickle4307 5 дней назад

      Like The Jackal, the gunsmith was a professional. Sells and manufactures weapons to the right customer, and no questions asked. The forger on the other hand tried to blackmail The Jackal, with some identifiable negatives, and that was his downfall.

    £1,200 in 1962 would be the equivalent of £32,000 or $42,000 in today's (2024) money. A good rate for 2 weeks of work.

    There is an outtake with the old gunsmith when he turns his back and says he has a a bit more expenses, and the Jackal considers chopping im, and when the gunsmith says its only about £20 and not trying to rip him off, he decides to spare him.

      I thought that was in the original cut. Jake Black getting offed for dishonestly trying extort Bruce Willis in the remake was a nod to that scene. I remember how frightened the gunsmith was when the jackal took offense.

      In the book, the gunsmith explains to the Jackal that his lawyer holds a letter with all the available information of their interaction. If he doesn't receive a call from the gunsmith at an appointed time, the lawyer will mail it to the authorities. If he does get the call, the lawyer burns the whole thing without reading it. He apologizes for this, simply states in his line of work, this is necessary. The Jackal understands completely.
