Inside Brazil's Biggest Prison Beauty Pageant

  • Brazil, known for its beautiful beaches and beautiful people, is home to the biggest pageants in the world. Each year, Miss World, Miss Universe, and Miss Earth are crowned in the country. And at the Penitenciaria Feminina da Capital in Sao Paolo-South America's largest all-female maximum security prison-so is Miss Max.
    Unlike traditional pageants, the contestants competing for the title of Miss Max are currently serving long sentences for crimes like drug trafficking, kidnapping, and even homicide. They are, however, judged using the standard pageant criteria: beauty, poise, and talent-plus their record of good behavior. This year, LGBTQ inmates can also vie for the title of Mr. Congeniality.
    We travel to Sao Paolo, Brazil, to capture the days of preparation leading up to the crowning of Miss Max, which includes runway training from a professional choreographer and a day of hair and makeup courtesy of some of Brazil's best stylists. We also talk with the incarcerated contestants about how a beauty competition can help them temporarily escape the monotony of their lives behind bars.

      i truly wish this was the reality, this video shows only that specific prison. the government couldn't care less about anything other than stealing money from the population. i just found out about this video and i'm so impressed that these things actually even happen here. most prisons are overpopulated, in horrible conditions, with 15 people in cells meant for 5. while this video shows the reality of that prison, it might give the wrong impression that they're all, or mostly, like that, when they're really not :/

      It also has to do with their social status before getting arrested. Most of the time, rich, white women who come from influent families do not get the same jail time and punishments as women that come from poor families and/or are a part of a racial and sexual minority when caught with drugs.

      The actual maximum security prisions are federal facilities located in the middle of nowhere. Those are the ones dangerous criminals go to. Our prision system is similiar to the US. People go to jail for ridiculoud, victimless drug charges, that most of the time are to blame on the their economic status that forces them into to dealing to et some money, and not on them. We have overcrowded prisions that target mostly black and brown people or immigrants. It's a shame.

    This might just be the most positive prison program I have ever seen. Unless they're all faking it, they seem truly excited, encouraged, and most importantly happy by doing this. Good on you Brazil. Stay awesome. I can only hope that here in the States, where we have an obscene amount of incarcerated people, that we get it together the way they have here.
    Addendum: I'm not saying this prison is perfect, because I'm sure there's some bad stuff we didn't see in this video. Jail is jail after all. But this was a really positive and beautiful thing.

      Kennedy Walker I do a little bit of course because everyone makes mistakes but... This isn't fair. While some other women out there who did horrible things because the world was so unkind to them are being executed or sitting in real prison, these women just get no punishment for their actions. I forget what her name was but there was a serial killer and she was a prostitute, that already tells you life is very hard and degrading for her. She would kill a lot of men that were unlucky enough to find her and there must be a reason. She hated men, was sexually abused at a young age and she was still being used as an adult. She was in prison and then executed and I think she was hurting inside more than all of these women, I think she also cried.

      Marla Nicole I understand all you are saying just reading your comment hurts me but I honestly do not agree that when someone was raped or in any other form sexually molested that you would turn to the same thing that hurts you. I was molested and I don't prostitute myself. Actually I hate men and i dont find sex exciting i actually would prefer being a man. so dont blame what happened to you in your pass for what you eventually become. what i strongly believe is that you the individual that was hurt should deal with the issue and let others know about what you went through and pray pray and cry cry and hope for the best

      Please...you have no idea what the prison system is like in Brazil. If you would like the english version, go rent a movie called Carandiru. They responded to a riot by going in and slaughtering everyone. And why wouldn't the prisoners riot? They were stacked in cells like library books and diseases such as HIV/AIDS ran rampant without even doing an easy thing like giving them condoms. Brazil's prisons are a cesspool of violence and human rights abuses. I found it ironic that this prison is also located in Carandiru.

      People go to prison for various reasons, and most of these girls are there for smuggling drugs if you saw the entire video.
      I am not justifying their bad actions and what got them there in the first place. However, I do believe that if you make a mistake you pay for it, and have all the right to rectify those mistakes and live a decent life. I am no one to judge, nor am I excusing the reason why they ended up there. Everyone deserves a second chance in life, even if you pay lifetime in prison you can rectify your mistakes and positively impact society within the prison system.

    The choreographer's way of thinking is so admirable and I wish there were more people like him! People who are shocked by all of this happening in a prison need to remember their humanity, and imagine how rehabilitating positive activities like this can be

    I really liked this. I have a Justice degree (criminology major), so it was interesting to me how this pageant is used as a form of both mental health program of sorts and rehabilitation. Women in prison are most often inmates as a result of being a victim of abuse (physical, mental, sexual) and more often than not just need to regain their confidence, so they don't fall back into it after release.

      The sad thing is the people that cost society the most money through insurance fraud, bank constructions and all other monetary scams never get caught and if they do they only get a lighter sentence especially as 'first time offenders' even though they've been stealing other people's money for almost a lifetime.
      I bet that if you would give all these women some of that fraud money and say: you can make a better life for yourself with this check, they would start companies employing other people and especially women in the same position whilst taking great care of their families. I would put my hand in a fire pit for that.

    This would only happen outside of America. God bless Brazil for considering to do anything that even dares to allow a prisoner to feel human. In America, where our prisons are privatized for profit, we like to them full no matter how frivolous the charges and keep those prisoners caged forever. What a breath of fresh air this documentary was.

    • @DG-ig1rb
      @DG-ig1rb 3 года назад +5

      Well, I can not talk about prisons in US because I don't know enough about that system in your country. It is not that 'cool' here in Brazil too. Anyway, this is a female prision, so I really believe that, by nature, it tends to offer a different environment. It may also vary from prison to prison, state, city and so on.

    • @EyeLoveTheStars
      @EyeLoveTheStars 3 года назад

      This is for women. Think they'd do something similiar for men? Doubt it. Besides, prison isn't supposed to be easy or comfortable. It's prison. People need an incentive to NOT GO TO prison.

    • @joycemelo88
      @joycemelo88 3 года назад +2

      Unfortunately this documentary shows an exception to the rule. I was very glad to see this kind of environment in a Brazilian prison. I also think that a female prison is very different from the male ones. Those are usually crowded, and offer little to no chance of rehabilitation for the inmates. They are just tossed there.
      And this does not serve as "an incentive to NOT GO TO prison" as @EyeLoveTheStars mentioned below. Most of them come back after commiting even bigger crimes then the ones that got there the first time, often after being tied up with gangs inside the prisons.

    THIS is reporting. I have so much respect for this documentary, and for those who put this on in BRAZIL. I love Brazil for this. The humanity in this event, in their prisons, the reporting, the prisoners is incredibly beautiful, inspiring and educating. It had me in tears with the mother who came all the way from the amazons, and the humanity of the guards and the director of the pageant working with the women. Countries around the world, especially my own, the US, need to take A LOT from this example of how to rehabilitate people from mistakes and prison, usually due to POVERTY. We and our governments need to do more to protect women as well as all people from turning to crime as a way to survive. It is not their fault alone. These women are so beautiful, so intelligent and are so deserving of this and more. May we all seek ways to enact this in society, programs and opportunities like this, including legislation that HUMANIZES and rehabilitates peoples in prison rather than capitalizing on it and creating a cyclical nature to offenses so that people never escape its system and design. More Humanity everywhere.
