- The World Record History of how Super Mario Odyssey was beaten in under one hour. The road to sub-hour was hard fought but some dedicated speedrunners made it happen with incredible dedication and determination. Here's their story.

I love how a large group of speed runners didn’t even notice that you could R U N
Yeah, how did that happen? Holding the button to run is in literally every 2-D Mario game.
@@JonSmith-hk1bq prob since super mario odyssey doesn't have a run mechanic in the rest of the game so people just never bothered trying and the few that did figure it out prob thought everyone knew considering how fast people were beating that part compared to them and the speedrunners focus on optimizing as much as they can which causes them to overlook obvious things since testing something that might not work would be a waste of time
@@k1llsh0t_87 I mean, sure, but I immediately switched to 2D running control. Didn't even think about it.
Reminds me of how a Rainbow Coin in Donkey Kong 64 was discovered 17 years after release. Some claim that they found it as kids or that they checked their old save file and noticed that they already collected it, yet it wasn't public knowledge until 2 years ago because hey... *surely* everybody already knows about it so there's no need to document it on the internet, right?
Really makes me curious about some of my own interesting observations I've made in games where I thought "This must be something that every expert player of this game already knows about". For all I know someone's "common knowledge" about a game might lead to insane new speedrunning records.
@@Azumongo It wouldn't have occured to me that people wouldn't know this, honestly...
Stuff that was understood in the early days of Odyssey speedrunning: You can throw Cappy with precise timing to collect a moon and then instantly warp through solid rock.
Stuff that wasn't understood: Bowser runs.

I find it quite funny how Nicro confidently proclaimed that sub hour was impossible, then becomes the first person to get sub hour, and then just peaces out, having secured his spot in speed running history

"This skip had nothing to do with [Dram], people just kept naming stuff after him as a joke." I find that far more amusing than I probably should.
dude, there are like 50 trickjumps named after dram
Luigi's Hat Omg, gimme some examples!
I also found this highly amusing.
It is hilarious tho
Same here lol.
It’s crazy how refined these runs are. We’re judging 2 second mistakes on an HOUR long run. These runners are insane.
Go watch a gta 5 speedrun
Tbh, this is pretty exaggerated. If you watch the full runs, there are plenty of bigger mistakes that are more apparent then the 2 to 3 seconds lost in the clips that were shown.
You should see GoldenEye or Doom where they are wrestling for a single decimal
Yeah, it was a little overexaggerated. Especially if you noticed Nicros sum of best segments was a 59:12 when he set the sub-hour. That means he made at least 47 seconds of mistakes.
@@magnusm4 Along with super mario bros
One thing I love about the speedrunning community is how advances are a true group effort. No single person can independently find all the glitches and strats. Tricks are shared and everyone is psyched to see someone discovering and using a new one. Really shows how vital community and shared information is to progress.
Ya. I agree.
Iknow. Every time I hear about a barrier getting broken, its always applauded by every runner. They all love the game more than they want the glory. They still want that glory too, but they'd rather it get broken by someone than no one.

Under 1 hour after the big bang *humans have gone into space*
I've already discovered the Earth to Mars slingshot clip skip, it's just relatively unknown. First you must do a precise series of yoga moves to clip through the ground. Second you must use your momentum to get into a nice orbit just under the Earth's crust. Third you wait for a while, gaining tons of speed. Fourth you slightly adjust your movement so that you clip out of the earth's crust on top of Everest. Fifth you kick off of the top of Everest with a charged jump, along with your previous speed, to reach escape velocity (this is the most difficult part and has ended most of my runs). Sixth you use the ISS to bank off of, and aim yourself right at mars. It's a difficult skip that not even Elon can pull off consistently, but once people start to master it I think it'll become the new meta.
@@enotsnavdier6867 there is actually an easier way if you get onto a horse and then run into a wall to get into the death world you can actually clip into the wall and tp to mars with a loading glich

Yeah, but that requires proton perfect movement. You need a tool assisted life to get it right even once, let alone consistently. It's just not nearly as practical as my method, not until we get the cybernetic brain enhancement DLC.
