Super Mario Odyssey was the first game I actually saw get absolutely mastered by its players in front of my very eyes. People taking the game way past my own skills and making insane speedruns was actually fascinating to watch
I've only played SMO once. I've never done a single speedrun in my life, yet the ending in this video, where everyone is just screaming and yelling, elated at what they just did, made my eyes well up a little. This is just two years of what speedrun optimization can do to a game. Just imagine, 15 years down the line, when you can beat SMO in under 20 minutes. It'll be SM64 all over again. Damn.
Smallant1 in scripted video: "Let me regale you with the timeless tale of how Super Mario Odyssey was completed in under one hour, and the tremendous communal undertaking that made such a legendary feat possible." Smallant1 in regular stream: "WE BOUNCE DAT BOI" "EX-DEE GUYZ" "So we're going to play Super Mario Odyssey with chopsticks today..."
I've already discovered the Earth to Mars slingshot clip skip, it's just relatively unknown. First you must do a precise series of yoga moves to clip through the ground. Second you must use your momentum to get into a nice orbit just under the Earth's crust. Third you wait for a while, gaining tons of speed. Fourth you slightly adjust your movement so that you clip out of the earth's crust on top of Everest. Fifth you kick off of the top of Everest with a charged jump, along with your previous speed, to reach escape velocity (this is the most difficult part and has ended most of my runs). Sixth you use the ISS to bank off of, and aim yourself right at mars. It's a difficult skip that not even Elon can pull off consistently, but once people start to master it I think it'll become the new meta.
@@enotsnavdier6867 there is actually an easier way if you get onto a horse and then run into a wall to get into the death world you can actually clip into the wall and tp to mars with a loading glich
Tom Cox Yeah, but that requires proton perfect movement. You need a tool assisted life to get it right even once, let alone consistently. It's just not nearly as practical as my method, not until we get the cybernetic brain enhancement DLC.
@Caleb Varcoe that's true, but in games big time saves are always discovered. Eventually there will be massive skips found in Odyssey and the record will progress. Maybe not 10 minutes, but a lot faster than it is now.
Smallant wouldn't have to be as meticulous with finding sources as SummoningSalt as he's an active member of this community, and already knows the vast majority of what he needs to talk about before the video was even thought of. I love how over the years, what was thought to be impossible in speed running became possible by innovation and human ingenuity. I remember always thinking sub 1-hour was possible but it’d take a lot of time.
Every time I see one of these world record progression vids, it seems to start with a bunch of people saying "Can't happen, not gonna try". That seems to spark a bunch of people saying "Bet, watch this" and that always makes me super happy. I think my favorite game to hear that about is Mario 64, because these mad lads are still trying to knock off seconds almost 24 years later. Damn.
I think that unless Nintendo makes updates favoring speedrunners, there WR can be no less than 55 minutes
Smallant1 in scripted video: "Let me regale you with the timeless tale of how Super Mario Odyssey was completed in under one hour, and the tremendous communal undertaking that made such a legendary feat possible."
Smallant1 in regular stream:
"WE BOUNCE DAT BOI"
"EX-DEE GUYZ"
"So we're going to play Super Mario Odyssey with chopsticks today..."
Balance, in all things.
“You can hear the passion in his voice”
WOOOOO, FUCK YEEEESSSSSS

When you realize that if speedrunners ruled the world we would have taken insane shortcuts to become a galaxy wide colony
You're smart, I like you.
Under 1 hour after the big bang *humans have gone into space*
Tom Cox
Yeah, but that requires proton perfect movement. You need a tool assisted life to get it right even once, let alone consistently. It's just not nearly as practical as my method, not until we get the cybernetic brain enhancement DLC.
10 years from now...
"How the sub 10 minute run was completed!"
If SummoningSalt has taught me anything, it's that this is probably the truth.
@Caleb Varcoe that's true, but in games big time saves are always discovered. Eventually there will be massive skips found in Odyssey and the record will progress. Maybe not 10 minutes, but a lot faster than it is now.
Paze Gonya we still haven’t even found a way to skip any kingdoms. I feel a glitch like that is inevitable
@Caleb Varcoe Why do you write a capital letter at every start of a word? No offense, but how do you even type like that? Its so hard for me tbh.
@Caleb Varcoe 100 years from now we will be pulling a sethbling and injecting code into the game and warping to the credits
Nicro: humans can’t get sub hour
Also nicro: gets sub hour
Nicro exposed himself of being an alien
Smallant: you could hear the passion in his voice
His voice: F*ck YEAH
I love how Shaeden just goes 'Tsk, let's do another run.' at one point
Eh I'll wr sure whatever
Ok world record I guess, I can beat that whatever I don’t care

Woooooo gi indeed
You could hear the passion in his voice every time he gets a new world record...
*FUCK YES*
Man, I still remember when you uploaded the speedrun trick tutorials...
The good times
I can’t believe Smallant can be as informative as Summoningsalt.
This vid was rly good but it doesn't have the vibe energy of summoningsalt vids
Fair point summoning slat takes months to make his videos.
Smallant wouldn't have to be as meticulous with finding sources as SummoningSalt as he's an active member of this community, and already knows the vast majority of what he needs to talk about before the video was even thought of. After that it's gathering info, slight fact checking with fellow members, and editing the video itself. Not to diminish either of them, but I'm sure everyone has a game or two that they could give an extremely in-depth history of
50 percent rule: After the first generally accepted "good" world record is established, expect the lowest possible record to be 50% of that time
29 minutes OOF
what about the original super mario bros tho, one of the first few records was a 5:16 and after 12 years it went down to a 4:55
@@angry3195 no 78/2 = 39
Intergalactic Potato ? If the record is 58 minutes, 50% would be 29
@@angry3195 it says generally accepted good record, which was probably 1:18, therefore 78/2=39
Shaden appeared suddenly, trained everyone on how to be good at the game, then disappeared. What a legend.
Smallant: "I made my single contribution to the speedrun..."
He's finally gonna talk about XD skip isn't he?
... nope
preethamrn man that’s a real XD

that one dude in nicro’s stream: IM CHUMMING IM CHUMMING IM CHUMMING IM CHUMMING

Chumming is like cooming but less edible. (God why do I even think?)
@@mgyaya987 no, that's what the guy had said in the chat, or if you meant if what the guy said was a typo, could've just been a different way of saying it, like how people say dud instead of dude
@@solantir3243 Who says dud? No one.
I love how well your voice fits to this style of video. Also when I clicked I never expected the vid to be like this but I honestly really really love it
You should watch summoning salt it's the same style and really good content
@@mr.eeggbert1340 I already watch him in fact recently I just rewatched his mario warpless vid and his coco mountain vid. His content is so amazing and I love that style. And I never expected ant to do something like this and its certainly a pleasant suprise. I wish there was even more content like this out there.
@@zyvan3179 i know it's just such a interesting form of content and i really hope ant does more
This video was put together so well! Great storytelling!

Damn, porn, funny, hah, nice :)
Jeffry Dounut nah it’s really just the ridiculously small time window that he had the record for. I mean, now you mention it it kinda sounds like porn.

I love the subtle change in voice as you say “Wii Sports” when mentioning Nicro Veda.
I come back to this video periodically just because it’s so well-made. Thanks, Ant.

I love how Shaeden is just like the typical anime character that's just 100 times better than everyone and just doesn't care about the others (?
He's the one who shows up to a tournament, sweeps it, and leaves before taking the trophy.
@@ariajacobs5719 that's a much better comparison thanks

WR is now 56 minutes 06 seconds
That’s not even real it’s 56 minutes and 21 seconds
Now 56:04
More insight on to why Shaeden didn't run on 1.0.0-- When he did 1p runs, he was using his roommate's switch. He wasn't allowed to wipe the data to get 1.0.0. He said this in his streams.
He might not have the world record anymore, but he was truly the best runner this game has ever seen.
Awesome video btw :)
That explains his way too casual reactions. Can't yell too loud or his roommate would have noticed he's using the switch again.

Shaeden: *Aight, I'm doing another run*

I love how over the years, what was thought to be impossible in speed running became possible by innovation and human ingenuity. I remember always thinking sub 1-hour was possible but it’d take a lot of time.
But sub 1-hour isn’t a lot of time :)
@@phirb6069 this comment is so wrong but so right at the same time
take my dang like
Every time I see one of these world record progression vids, it seems to start with a bunch of people saying "Can't happen, not gonna try". That seems to spark a bunch of people saying "Bet, watch this" and that always makes me super happy. I think my favorite game to hear that about is Mario 64, because these mad lads are still trying to knock off seconds almost 24 years later. The fierce competition is amazing, and the communities that get built up make me feel like the Internet is worth the problems it causes.
SMO was released 3 years ago
@@MyHandleIsAplaceholder are you referring to the commment above you talking about m64? or "over the years"?
This is the ultimate comfort video for me, it feels like I'm always coming back to it.
