- Isle of Man and the Viking Castle in Peel, Peel Castle. Let's go visit the historic Peel Castle which is a castle in Peel on the Isle of Man, originally constructed by Vikings. Peel Castle is a castle in Peel on the Isle of Man, originally constructed by Vikings. Peel Castle stands on St Patrick's Isle which is connected to the town of Peel by a causeway. Peel Castle is now owned by Manx National Heritage and is open to visitors during the summer.
Peel Castle was built in the 11th century by the Vikings, under the rule of King Magnus Barefoot. While there were older stone Celtic monastic buildings on the island, the first Viking fortifications were built of wood. The prominent round tower was originally part of the Celtic monastery, but has had battlements added at a later date. In the early 14th century, the majority of the walls and towers were built primarily from local red sandstone, which is found abundantly in the area. After the rule of the Vikings, the castle continued to be used by the Church due to the cathedral built there - the see of the diocese of Sodor and Man - but was eventually abandoned in the 18th century.

I loved every thing about this place.. except the wind was about to blow our Vic away! The wind blown look suits you though!! My children will love this! They found out through DNA that they are descendants of the Vikings on their fathers side. I'm doing my test on Mother's day lol! Thanks for this Awesome documentation!..Hope your ears didn't hurt from the wind! You make this widow smile!😊
OMG.. Early experimentation with videotaping here in this video... Creating videos is an evolutionary process, I hope the quality has improved since 2011...
Your comments gave me a chance to watch this video once again.. It seems like yesterday that I was there, I remember every moment.......
In my opinion all your videos are priceless! Yes your videos today are professional, this one however is sweet and beautiful. We love anything Viking!🕊️♥️
@Cassandra McLean Thank you for your wonderful comments! I wish I could go back there once again, I could create such a beautiful video with my SONY camera.. The musical piece is called 'Drone in D' by Kevin MacLeod
Im actually a direct decedent of magnus Barefoot. I need to go here so bad
I live in Canada now, but I was born in the Isle of Man. My family was from Peel. My Grandfather was a well known builder in Peel and he was asked to shore up some of the walls of Peel Castle in the 1950's (As you can imagine the relentless wind and sea takes its toll). He used the original sandstone as much as possible and was very careful to make it look untouched. I can remember him taking me around the castle as a little boy and telling me all the wonderful stories including the infamous Moddey Dhoo (Black Dog). It is a very special place for me. Thank you for your beautiful video.
Thank you for your wonderful and very interesting comments..
Man I want to go so bad. I live in Florida lol. Visiting Isle Of Man is a dream
Hello, thank you for your comments!! I hope you can make it there one day!
I used to live with Peel castle and the break water as the view from my front window. So thanks for the video brings back many happy memories. Not to sure about the wind though, it use to howl through the sashes and spread salt across the windows, sand from the beach would dust the window sills. No I don't miss the wind. I would like to point out that PC predates the vikings by some considerable time and most of what is seen today is very post viking.
Hello, thank you for your comments!!
It's amazing to think about. Here in Norway we have some few artifacts and a few boats left of the viking age. But in Scotland you have well preserved castles! Never seen anything like this. Proud to have viking blood running through my veins. Can't wait for my motorcycle trip around Scotland next summer, defiantly going here.

This is an awesome video of Peel castle. I am a direct decendant of the last caretaker of the castle. My mother's family name is Cashin formerly spelled "Cashen" or "Casian". I will be in Peel in 2023 to replicate the famous picture of the "Old man" near the castle walls

Maybe we will be there at similar times. Anxious to go.
I am Manx, and born in Peel, and having just had my DNA taken, it turns out I am around 80% Scandinavian, so given my birth place and where many of my family lived in the past, it is very likely I am of Viking heritage. I now follow the path of Odin and Freya and other Norse Gods, as I have always been Pagan, but not able to find a path I that felt right to me, but as soon as I found my heritage out and have been studying all things Viking, I finally feel that this is the path I belong to. Far more than any other path I have learned about. So, its all good, I really feel like I have at last found out a rough idea of where I belong and belonged to. And judging by my strength and build, I can see myself as a Shield-Maiden!!!!!!
Gag-worthy fantasy. You are no warrior unless you enlist in an armed force.
You don,t know the Peel girls!
I’ve traced my family roots to this using ancestry... blew my mind!!!!

Hello, thank you for watching my videos!! 👍👍👍
Although these ruins are very humbling....For those of us who are researching our heritage it would be good to see the names on the tomb stones...as this sight is in england to which we have to weed through their deceptions formost and vikings were not known to have churches.
Thank you for your comments!
excelente!

It was built in 1093 by the Vikings under the King Magnus barefoot majm
Thank you for this information and for viewing my videos!!
Light ancestors also are from the Isle of Man it would be an interesting to be able to read some of the signs Unlike other comments some verbal information about the Isle of Man
I need to go back for another visit, th.ais video (unfortunately) is from my early days of videotaping..
That's the 1st time I have seen in peel Castle since 2002 Yes It was built in 1093 by the Vikings built for King Magnus he was called barefoot their was already stuff their at the time and some more stuff added in the 14th century like some walls and tower with sandstone in the18th century it was Abandoned don't no why and in 1980 something they found graveyards in the Castle all so King Magnus barefoot in a wooden fort they all so found a grave of a lady dating back from the 10th century they called her the pagan lady and we all so have a famous ghost called the moddey Dhoo A black dog but it's not a dog ghost it's a demon only a few of us have seen the beast no one really goes to peel castle at night like I found out one night in 2002 I was with a few friends drinking I went for a walk and what came out of that wall that was scary they look right at me you can call peel a town or a city dose not matter fella I would call it a town it's just peel to me keep it up fella 😊
Hello, thank you for your comments and for sharing with us all this information!!
I live in peel I live in bully spittle num 12
+Silly billy I hope that you liked my video, it was one of the first videos I ever made when I was experimenting with my camera and my introductory style...
Great video really enjoyed it! Came across it by accident and glad I did, I'll be planning a trip there now with the the family! Nice one, can I ask the name of the piece of music in the video? Sorry for being thick but it will really bug me if I don't find out
One of my favorite musical pieces... It is by Puccini, the Humming Chorus from Madame Butterfly..
Great many thanks
Does the Manx language derive from Irish Gaelic as is the case with Scotch Gallic?
If it does it's either an Ulster or Leinster dialect given the proximity of both of these provinces to Inis Manain Mac Lir. ('Man').
Hello, thank you for watching my videos!! I am not really sure regarding the origins of the manx language, maybe someone else can help us on this subject..
My Manx ancestors came from Peel
Hello, thank you for watching my videos!! 👍👍👍
3:12 anyone else see something happening to that stone in the wall? its moving
Did you know that peel Castle is haunted by a phantom dog called the moddey dhoo mmmmm
Hmmm.. No, I did not know that...
That sounds like Irish "Madra Dubh (doo) meaning "Black Dog".
Cool
graves in the cathedral?
There are many places around the world that have graves inside and/or around the Cathedral... Thank you for viewing my videos!!
ive seen burials in cathedrals in Italy but not with tombstone markers.. pretty cool!!
I would say these burials with tombstones happened after the cathedral was no longer in use...
This is not build by vikings. Or northsmen. Maybe it was taken by us but not build by us.
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍
Music is to loud. Gave me a headache.
Sorry, an early video of mine from my experimentation days!
can't hear any of the sound
+Madison Cicotte The sound works perfectly from my laptop...
+Vic Stefanu I think it was the computer I was on :( I can hear it perfectly clear on my phone
You should have used proper Scandinavian music, far removed from viking halls.
I will be replacing the music soon, thank you for the suggestion!
