VRC6 chip blows away the US NES audio chip in most ways -- although there are some sharp and chunky bass sounds the VRC6 can't do. There's an extraordinary remix of the entire soundtrack that uses both the VRC6 and NES chip for the best of both worlds.
@feldon27 Thanks for explaining that. I’ve always grasped the added quality of the Japanese version but felt something was missing, too. Good to know they’re different but one is not 100% superior than the other.
