My son and I made ours today and it was crazy easy! And inexpensive, as you mentioned. The only thing we did differently was hook it up to our downspout. I got that converter on Amazon as well as the kit and garbage pail. The whole thing cost about 50$ (the kit came with 2 sets) and maybe all of 45 minutes, mostly because of the downspout attachment. If we hadn't done that, 30 mins with me learning how to do it all! Thanks
great DIY project, i have a few older garbage bins that i use for harvesting rain water, but haven't added the spigots. This motivated me to do so! Thanks for sharing.

I make homemade wine in 5 gallon buckets and the spigots are used there, too and they are sooo easy to install! One word of caution about drilling holes into plastic - go slow and let the drill/bit do the work. Excess pressure can easily crack the plastic and ruin an entire bucket or garbage can!

I live in a Caravan which has a 2nd paradise roof on it, which is angled slightly, I am thinking about doing something like this, this way I have fresh rainwater, to collect for drinking purposes, this has motivated me in doing something like this, I was thinking along these lines, but wasn't sure how to set it up, but I will be putting a little gutter system on the paradise roof, and putting a little down pipe on it to collect the rain water, Also too I would be using the same principle for my trailer, which sits besides the van, and so items don't get wet, I would be doing the same thing there as well, so I would have 2 container's collecting the rainwater for drinking...and washing dishes. I was able to siphon it out, thanks to videos on the rules of siphoning. The spigot came in today but can't find my 1 3/8" hole saw so out to the hardware store.
Thinking* of using your idea but attaching a drip hose in order to water plants in a 20 ft. strip. I think I can get enough gravity push to do the job. I could even plug up some of the holes to keep the water flowing. In fact if I put the hole high enough I can aid the gravity. In addition, my downspout is presently directing water to the side of my house and is making a muddy mess. So if this works, two problems will be solved! Thanks for getting my thinking going.

@@debrawilliams-buss4694 seems odd that he did not show how to connect to a downspout. Last nite I got 2 measly inches of rain in a wheelbarrow out in the back yard, but filled three 32 gal trash cans from the roof gutter-downspout; that is where to collect rainwater from.
How many gallons is the barrel? Is 32 gallons big enough? How big is the hole you drilled in the barrel? What size hole bit did you use? Can I use just a drill bit then make it bigger with a knife?
In a survival situation yes, but in general the plastics in garbage cans isn't food grade so it can leach chemicals into the water. The same idea could be applied to a food grade container for drinking water though!
Do you know where one can buy this heavy duty Rubbermaid trash can? I have searched the internet extensively and cannot find another "Rubbermaid Bruiser" model trash can (with wheels and lid that clamps shut) - which is what the trash can in this video looks to be. I have found a few places that appear to list this model trash can but in reality it is not in stock. I would love to find a couple more Rubbermaid Bruiser cans. I think rubbermaid may have discontinued the model and now they have something similar, without wheels, called a Rubbermaid Animal Stopper but that is hard to find also.
This might be a dumb question: The kit is 3/4 inches, but your materials list has a 1 3/8" hole saw. I already have a 1 1/4" hole saw. Will that fit the kit you linked to?
Drill a hole into the lid and fit it with a metal mesh drain cover, then flip the lid upside down to sit on top of the barrel. This will help keep debris out of your collected rain water. Place the barrel under your downspout for faster water collection.

I’ve also used a can to make a composter. Also placed a garbage can under the downspout
Just be aware of all the chemicals that the rain rinses off of your roof if it's asphalt.

No, you will need to build a collection system. Most houses have one set up already (your roof). Just needs to be diverted into the barrel

It's a Ryobi 18v for sure. P215BN would be my guess, but the plastic of a garbage bin is thin enough most any drill should work!

I am pretty sure no one could give me a reason that I cant collect the water that God sends down from the sky.
