We should be flexible when needed and strong when needed. Knowing when to be what goes a long way in our effectiveness in Wing Chun and Martial Arts in general 🙇🏿‍♂️

The great thing about this is that they aren't just teaching Wing Chun, they're also teaching how to fight.

I'm glad and relieved to see another instructor taking a sensible and practical approach to teaching our beautiful art. I also teach and I teach boxing and too many Wing Chun instructors are great at teaching classical training, but we fail miserably at 21st century fighting. Well done brother.

true i may study it but that doesnt mean you wont see me throwing tkd and muay thai kicks boxing hooks and uppercuts stepping in and putting my weight on someone or circling and constantly stutter stepping around to get someone to throw a missing punch simply put you dont need to stick to 1 way of thinking therefore you wont have a 1 track mind

2:05 Very true. Wing chun is an infighting martial art which is what chi sao and the structure is for but to get to that close range you will need head movement especially with higher level opponents. I saw in the third form that wing chun sways the body for head movement but I don’t think it has bobbing and weaving which makes sense when you could get kneed or kicked in the face.

Most kickboxing and mma fighting excludes head movement for that reason. Muay Thai got rid of it altogether. It’s more standing straight up moving back or to the side and hands up protect the head allow the body to get hit. You have to be strategic when kicks and knees are apart of the equation.

I agree. Classical is the food on the table. Non classical is what comes out.

I never understood why some wing chun people say you're not suppose to move your head because your losing your structure , wing chun is based on efficiency so if I move my head rather than my whole body I'm using the most efficient way of evading a force as long as I regain my structure, look at how some boxers move their heads and roll with a punch their timing is perfect because they regain their balance to counter attack, another thing is don't fight with your chin straight up and exposed, look at how boxing has evolved from bare knuckles to today, look at Floyd Mayweather and James lights out Tony are they not using the jab hook upper cut from boxing but in a boxing style suited to them. I love the principles of wing chun to me it has to be dynamic not static

couldnt have said it better myself i dont move my whole body around them unless they throw a haymaker in which case the only reason i do is to move into a better position to counter out of the way of the haymaker killing two birds with one stone

I hear you on the biu or fak sau intercept, that is stronger than tan sau. Then you can grab and strike while inside the arc, you could even raise up your arm to cover the head. Good stuff , I have been practicing some slips and moving, staying loose, also slip then strike. Good to see you and the school in action again!

Yes sir if I meet the energy specifically I’d fak sao karate calls it a knife hand block. If projecting forward I’d do biu. Good to stay loose! Hopefully see you soon Matt! Take care 🙏🏿

Incorporating head movements into Wing Chun is not a flaw. Just look at Karate. We saw a lot of Karate users using head movements in a ring although Karate doesn't traditionally teach head movements right. And Karate users do head movements in the ring. Only thing is to adapt the situations like water.

Correct I believe it’s situational. For sparring or competitions it’s smart especially if there’s no knees you still want to temper it a bit to where it’s not as wide as boxing can be but for self defense 1 or 2 movements and then attack don’t waste too much time dodging if you can attack

Head movement in wing chun is bending the rules, Wing chun theory is there to really on. Like being taught how to cook and clean. Sometimes. You want to order out
