He was a self destructive, abusive, manipulative piece of shit alcoholic who uses the term "sacrifice" to justify him being an asshole to his family and others around him. A real father does makes sacrifices but not to the extend that it causes him to become the monster Clay was.
You can still be a good father and still have hobbies outside of family life.
