It's even more messed up in the book. Kat gets a sprained ankle or something, nothing serious at all but he can't walk. Paul offers to carry Kat back to the lines. On the way they talk about stuff and are very relaxed, except for one time when a shell or bomb lands near them. They are well away from the blast radius and Paul is not hurt at all. So he keeps walking and talking to Kat. Few hours later when they finally get back and he puts down Kat, Paul finds out that Kat is dead. A tiny piece of shrapnel from the exploding shell had hit Kat in the back of his head, killing him instantly. Paul unknowingly had carried his dead friend on his back all along. Edit: wow, i don't know what's in this comment to get so many likes. Anyways, so many people are asking for the book title. It is 'All quiet on the Western Front' by Erich Maria Remarque.
The book and movie are masterpieces. No glory, no victory, just a fictional but true story of a man who slowly loses his friends and sanity, just to show that he is one among millions of soldiers experiencing the exact same thing.

I couldn't explain how much I could cry to all quiet on the western front, truly an amazing film with amazing images and devastating scenes. Couldn't begin to describe how good it is.
book is masterpiece, read it in ninth class of middle school and i really got attached to Kat and him dying just so sudden was extremly shocking for me since it was so relaxed it looked like he had just minor injury and then after shelling we realize he got killed by shrapnel and Paul has carried his dead friend
the fact that kat was just a person who repaired shoes for his family makes his death more tragic he had dreams he felt like a real person more than most movie characters and later in the movie after kat gets shot drunk celebrating german soldiers pass by them with cars and paul begged them to take them back but they just left paul and kat there just for fun causing the death of kat.
@@revivalofnutrient It's amazing that even though most of us are Americans or are in allied-affiliated nations, "the enemy" letting their own soldiers die managed to piss us off. Amazing movie and book
Those Germans in the trucks were celebrating the end of the war, they weren't ignoring Paul and Kat "for fun". With Kat's situation and him leaning on Paul, to the Germans in the truck it looked like Paul was carrying a drunk guy back to the base.
My teacher had us read All Quiet on the Western Front when I was in history back in high school. It was for my honors US History class, and we had to keep extensive notes on it. We took notes on the emotions of the characters and who they were and where they were, and so on. It was a very impactful book to me as a teen, and I think I should re-read it again as an adult.
For those who do t know the movie is called All quiet on the western front It's about 4 friend who join the military at the age of 18 and fight in WW2. The main character (Paul) lost his friends to the bombing and was so sad so he foun a new friend named Kat. Kat and Paul were stealin eggs and chicken from the farm so they could survive, they did it a couple of times. The tactic was that Paul was standing outside while Kat was stealing, but one time they switched places and the kid of the farmer saw Paul. He followed them in to the forest and shot Kat in the liver. Paul took him to the medic but the bullet poisoned him and he sadly passed away.
When going through hardship like they did, the simplest pleasures of life tend to be all the more greatly enjoyed. I remember the series "Band of Brothers". In one of the episode about the Siege of Bastogne, one of the former US paratroopers recalled to the camera that, as they had very little food supplies, he had once been served some creamy mint alcoholised liquor by one of the remaining Bastogne inhabitants. And the American soldier said that he had enjoyed this mint liquor so much in that moment that even some 60 years afterwards, he was greatly fond of it.
The thing that really sucks, the war was basically already over at this point, the peace treaty was signed and the war would officially be over in a number of hours, they were basically on their way home when they decided to come back to that farm to steal more livestock. But the worst part of all? The general overseeing the troops decided not to let the war end peacefully and sent the troops at gunpoint to trudge through no man’s land to launch a surprise attack on the enemy. There were mass casualties on both sides.
@@Vsm426 Potato, tomato. One side just couldn’t accept a peaceful conclusion out of injury of pride, and led to even more deaths that were somehow even MORE pointless than those that occurred during the war. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's still affecting us. My great grandfather was a disturbed man from the time he spent in your country. My family had wealth. Substance abuse, poor discipline, and bad decisions destroyed everything. We now realize it was PDSD. Now his decedent's live in squalor and every single male that is his heir is an addict or an alcoholic save for one, including my good self. Trauma is generational and epigenetic.
@@flipwhale5494 No, not really, to both questions. I just know he fought Nazis in Germany but I never talked to him about it and he came back a different person and basically destroyed is entire life and fortune. Left his children nothing when previously it was assumed they'd inheret a good deal of land. He also killed a man after he returned in a bar fight. I learned of all of this after his death and the the fact my family was rich just a week ago I'm almost 40. It still blows my mind and I didn't believe it. I did some research because I called cap. It doesn't matter what war you fight in. If you are actually going on missions and in direct combat, it changes you forever. Being at war is the exact opposite of civilized life in every aspect. You can't successfully adjust to a war zone without re-wiring how your brains works. It's the same as lighting a match. It can never go back to what it was.
All Quiet on the Western Front was such a damn well gripping and intense movie. Every second of it was outstanding and the raw and often raging emotions it made you feel (especially during the Saint-Chamond tanks scene) was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Not ashamed to say I cried at a lot of parts, feeling sorrow for these young men having to die for the glory of the old. Only complaint is that I wish the end of the movie followed the book more closely but apart from that it was done well. A definite watch and the book is a must read. Both I feel can be freely called masterpieces.
All Quiet On The Western Front really made me realise how deadly war is, a masterpiece of a movie. I also like that at the end despite getting bayonet stabbed and could have survived, he just sits looking like he is finally at piece that the war ended

All quiet on the Western front is deserves an Oscar because it doesn’t just show the American, British, or French perspective, it shows the perspective of what those countries saw as the “enemy” and giving the viewers more of an understanding of what it was like from their perspective. Plus Kat didn’t deserve to die because chickens lay eggs like everyday and the chicken is probably gonna lay more overtime, so the farm didn’t really need to go to the extreme

I’m from Russia and I’m learning German in University. This movie is perfect , looks realistic and language is easy to understand we read in classes Drei Kameraden , Remark is our favourite author
Why this scene is so good? It shows that the germans never were bloodlusted, violent demons. They also experienced fear, torturing, kidnapping, raping, getting murdered and also cared for there people, kids, parents, siblings, husband/wife, friends.. Beeing a sadistic soldier and being a soldier who follows orders and want better life for his familiy is a huge difference.
If you saw the movie you’d know how messed up it is. As you know he gets shot and injured the dude who gets shot didn’t want to get carried so they just kept on walking, after a while they saw a group of partying Germans on a bus. He begged to get on but they just laughed and made him walk, has they let him on kat’s story may have been different.

He was eventually captured by France but escaped and was pronounced dead In Germany until he finally came home one day 2 and a half months later. They moved to the US In 1925 and the rest is history. this whole movie REALLYYYY messed me up. ESPECIALLY the ending omg… I probably cried. Went through so much, before the last push, you can see it in his face how tired he was. He had nothing to lose anymore. Bearing so much weight on his shoulders. Then at the end of his life, he didn’t have to fight anymore, but it was too late because he was killed. Whether for better or worst. He no longer has to bear that weight that would have stayed with him for the rest of his life. Friends killed in front of him by artillery, suicide, lead poisoning. All that suffering he went through to die a slow, painful death. No one deserves this. War has no winners. Each person killed had a family, but it’s just a statistic in the end of it all. 10/10 would watch again 😁👍
Not accurate to the events at all though. Whilst its a good movie and portrays the same message i dont get why producers stray away from the REAL SOURCE MATERIAL

It's about 4 friend who join the military at the age of 18 and fight in WW2.

It's sad that he went through war and survived, then died in the way back home, just for an egg...

Man losing your mates in war is the worst
The thing that really sucks, the war was basically already over at this point, the peace treaty was signed and the war would officially be over in a number of hours, they were basically on their way home when they decided to come back to that farm to steal more livestock. But the worst part of all? The general overseeing the troops decided not to let the war end peacefully and sent the troops at gunpoint to trudge through no man’s land to launch a surprise attack on the enemy. There were mass casualties on both sides.
In truth though it was the french who made that last attack but with artillery

"All Quiet on The Western Front" is the movie. I don't say this lightly, but it is a masterpiece!
He didn’t even need the food because they already had food. They just liked stealing
Yeah right. You haven’t been trough shit in your life yet, kiddo.
This was one of the most messed up wars in history. Even if you survived you had to deal with bad ptsd
That is all wars. No one ever actually “survives“
War is war.
"bad ptsd": The term PTSD hadn't even been invented yet; at the time, they called it "Shell Shock" and regarded anyone with it mildly insane.
That's what I meant pretty much
All Quiet on the Western Front was such a damn well gripping and intense movie.
This modern movie is garbage. It's only good that comes from the visuals. The older movies were stunning.

Plus Kat didn’t deserve to die because chickens lay eggs like everyday and the chicken is probably gonna lay more overtime, so the farm didn’t really need to go to the extreme
