It's even more messed up in the book. Kat gets a sprained ankle or something, nothing serious at all but he can't walk. Paul offers to carry Kat back to the lines. On the way they talk about stuff and are very relaxed, except for one time when a shell or bomb lands near them. They are well away from the blast radius and Paul is not hurt at all. So he keeps walking and talking to Kat. Few hours later when they finally get back and he puts down Kat, Paul finds out that Kat is dead. A tiny piece of shrapnel from the exploding shell had hit Kat in the back of his head, killing him instantly. Paul unknowingly had carried his dead friend on his back all along.
Edit: wow, i don't know what's in this comment to get so many likes.
Anyways, so many people are asking for the book title. It is 'All quiet on the Western Front' by Erich Maria Remarque.

It's about 4 friend who join the military at the age of 18 and fight in WW2. The main character (Paul) lost his friends to the bombing and was so sad so he foun a new friend named Kat. Kat and Paul were stealin eggs and chicken from the farm so they could survive, they did it a couple of times. The tactic was that Paul was standing outside while Kat was stealing, but one time they switched places and the kid of the farmer saw Paul. He followed them in to the forest and shot Kat in the liver. Paul took him to the medic but the bullet poisoned him and he sadly passed away.

All Quiet on the Western Front was such a damn well gripping and intense movie. Every second of it was outstanding and the raw and often raging emotions it made you feel (especially during the Saint-Chamond tanks scene) was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Not ashamed to say I cried at a lot of parts, feeling sorrow for these young men having to die for the glory of the old. Only complaint is that I wish the end of the movie followed the book more closely but apart from that it was done well. A definite watch and the book is a must read. All quiet on the Western front is deserves an Oscar because it doesn’t just show the American, British, or French perspective, it shows the perspective of what those countries saw as the “enemy” and giving the viewers more of an understanding of what it was like from their perspective. It shows that the germans never were bloodlusted, violent demons. They also experienced fear, torturing, kidnapping, raping, getting murdered and also cared for there people, kids, parents, siblings, husband/wife, friends..

this whole movie REALLYYYY messed me up. ESPECIALLY the ending omg… I probably cried. Went through so much, before the last push, you can see it in his face how tired he was. He had nothing to lose anymore. Bearing so much weight on his shoulders. Then at the end of his life, he didn’t have to fight anymore, but it was too late because he was killed. Whether for better or worst. He no longer has to bear that weight that would have stayed with him for the rest of his life. Friends killed in front of him by artillery, suicide, lead poisoning. All that suffering he went through to die a slow, painful death. No one deserves this. War has no winners. Each person killed had a family, but it’s just a statistic in the end of it all. 10/10 would watch again 😁👍
