    Thanks for this video. There's a lot of confusion out there on charging the Spectres. A couple people said the RAVPower would work but it's good to see it in action and also know that it's got good enough output to be really useful. Very helpful that you gave the model number too. I'll give it a shot and hope my results mirror yours!

    hey thanks for the helpfull video,
    btw the reason why the HP does often charge when its of but not when its own is:
    Some customers were complaining that the display is flickereing from time to time when using not the original HP charger. Therefor HP disabled charging while on with 3rd party charges. Then they startet to enable it via BIOS updates for at least USB PD chargers which supports 20V

    Really useful video. I think it could benefit from some editing to clarify your measurements & summarize your testing. It's hard to keep all the numbers in your head as you're watching the video.
    A simple excel etc. chart that shows all of the devices & measurements, and a minute or two of "___, ___, and ___ will work to charge your device while you're using it. ___, ___, and ___ may slowly charge it while the device is off. ___ was the better charger, and ___ was the better battery pack"
    Am I right to conclude that:
    The RavPower 26800mAh iSmart 2.0 did the best job out of the external battery packs
    ~10 watts using USB A to C cable
    ~30-38 watts with laptop on or off using USB C cable
    Anker PowerCore+ 26800mAh
    ~6-10 watts using USB A to C
    Is it @ 9:53 you're using USB C And only getting 6-10 watts?
    HP charger (in the spectre): 38 watts on, 44 watts off
    Apple charger (in the macbook): 78 watts on, 70 watts off
    Apple charger (in the spectre): 41 watts
    HP charger (in the macbook): 42 watts
    Anker charger (in the macbook): 14.3 watts

    • @nthatomoagi6452
      @nthatomoagi6452 2 года назад

      @@thebeard9264 Hey man. Wow, it's been a LONG time since I got this. But short answer is yes, it did serve my needs. I used it to charge my MacBook Pro (with Touch Bar) and Nintendo Switch (Original release unit), but it wasn't that fast. I'm sure it will work the same on other USB-C laptops.
      By the way, if you are using the device while charging it with this power bank then you may not see the battery level increase, you may actually see it decrease over time. But you'll notice that the rate of battery level decrease is slower than if the power bank was not connected. So all this means that the rate at which the power bank is putting power into your device's battery is slightly lower than the amount of power your device is currently using at that time. So it kind of prolongs your battery life while you're using your device, instead of getting you to full battery - which is still a nett benefit IMO!
      I'd suggest you buy the power bank off Takealot or Makro, then open the packaging VERY carefully without damaging it. Test it with your devices for a few days, and return it for free if you're not happy with the performance.
      Hope that helps!

    Very useful mate, thanks.
    Only problem I find is that I don´t know how much power a 15" laptop can draw at any time, so if I try to use one of this powerbanks because my battery is about to die, I may or may not be able to keep using the laptop if it´s charging slower than it´s drawing power. Correct?

    • @techable7524
      @techable7524  6 лет назад +2

      Yup, that is in fact correct! Depending on the size of the battery you'll only get 30W max charging from this battery pack per hour so I'd say it's best to keep it topped-up when getting near 40% charge (laptop) or something, or do something a little less power intensive.

    • @1650million
      @1650million 6 лет назад

      That´s what I thought, thanks for the clarification. I guess it´s just a matter of using the powerbank ASAP, long before the main battery is about to die.
      I´m not sure, though, if that kind of slow battery (dis)charging can be detrimental to the laptop battery, since I wouldn´t want my non-replaceable battery to go bust by using this procedure. Do you happen to know if it´s OK to do that?

    • @techable7524
      @techable7524  6 лет назад +2

      I actually know a great deal about battery tech - there is a lot of stuff protecting your battery (both laptop and battery pack) so don't worry about it. The main things that kill a battery are overcharging and letting them get too low in charge. To give your battery a long life (x 3) simply don't charge to full (90% is just about right) and never let it run down to 0%. If you're not going to use your laptop for a bit store at 80% charge and you should give it a long life. Your battery protection circuits in your laptop will prevent any damage to the battery. But keeping it around 80% is best.
      But also, replacing a battery in this day and age is pretty easy too.

    • @1650million
      @1650million 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks again for the advice, mate.
      Not so sure about the "pretty easy" replacing of a battery though, in a time when an ever-growing number of laptops seem to be designed not to access them at all. And even if you can access them and you can actually change that battery without causing damage, there´s no telling if the manufacturer will ever sell you an internal battery X years down the road. More like they´re designed like that precisely to have the laptop replaced exclusively by the manufacturer at disproportionate prices. Still not as bad as modern cell-phones, but getting there pretty quickly...
      P.S. Message written from my Surface... ;)

      Most likely not too well, if it has a normal proprietary charging cable then that typically means it’s cuz it’s needed
      And usbc charging will likely still decrease the battery if you are using it, so really only possible to charge with usbc when the computer is off
      This is cuz windows laptops typically draw too much power and usbc is nice and convenient but don’t give enough wattage to charge normally, especially if trying to use the computer at the same time
      Only really Apple has gotten usbc charging down right with even the biggest and most powerful MacBook pros still being capable of usbc charging and while using it
      Like my 13 inch 2019 MacBook Pro I can use it while charging from a battery bank
      But I also have a dell 7370 13 inch windows laptop that does have one single usbc port and will technically charge from it but only when off cuz otherwise it still losses battery life
      I also have a 3rd laptop, being my gaming one, the Razer 15 which has a usbc port as well but definitely doesn’t charge at all with just a usbc cable
      The Razers charger needs to meet its massive 200watt requirement where as for example all MacBooks can charge through usbc with just a 60 watt usbc block and from many battery banks

      All usbc devices aren’t created equal, windows laptops typically draw too much power to charge over usbc properly
      Apples MacBooks are perfect for usbc charging
      Outside the smaller Razer 13 inch, which only has usbc charging like a MacBook and doesn’t even have another normal charging port, it’s pretty hard to find other laptops that can do as efficient usbc charging as a MacBook
      Even other windows laptops with very similar processor specs and lower resolution screens than MacBooks like the LG gram which is very similar in power to a MacBook still comes with a proprietary charging cable and isn’t meant for usbc charging

      I tried with both USB Power option on and off. In BIOS it says the option stands for the laptop ability to charge other devices while sleeping, so it should not influence the opposite direction. In fact, with both option on and off HP would still charge powerbank from TB3 port, so that is also not affected. Laptop is HP Spectre x360 15", 2017 edition.
      It won't charge from power bank in both cases. For TB3 port, it would start to charge laptop for minimal currency (19.5V at ~ 0.2A - measured using Pluggable usb-c volt meter) for 1-2 sec, but then stops and start charging power bank. Pressing button on power bank would get back to laptop charging for 1-2 secs and then everything repeats.

      I too had a few problems with the HP Spectre and USB-C charging from a power bank. Sometimes they don't play well with each other. It does take a few times for it to 'catch' and you may have to press and hold the button on the powerbank (about 8 secs) for it to go the other way. It may take a few attempts but it does work and hold eventually. It's not perfect I know. Hope this helps.

      Also having this same problem. My spectre x360 will always draw charge from the ravpower if the laptop is on, but if its in sleep/standby, it'll show that its charging for only 1-2 seconds then reverse itself and start charging the power bank instead. All the times ive tried to hold the button for 5 seconds just does the same thing...charges the laptop for 1-2 seconds then reverses. Did any of you figure out a solution or any new info about this?

    Can I use the anker 26800 plus/pd to charge the 65w Lenovo 720s. Will charging the laptop slowly hurt the battery?

    • @techable7524
      @techable7524  6 лет назад

      If the laptop supports PD on the USB-C port then it should work just fine as they both conform to the USB-C PD standard. PD works in stages and both sides of the charging process communicate together to see what each can send and accept - they both start low and work up from there. Also, the laptop battery has a good charging and discharging circuit and will keep everything safe when it comes to charging and discharging. Slowly charging a battery is actually better for batteries but you can just let the laptop battery do its job.

    I have a Wacom Mobilestudio Pro. According to the company it needs profile 5 which means 5V + 100W. I bought the Ravpower pack but sadly it does nothing. Any advice on charging or powerbanks I can use?

    • @braydenkenney3313
      @braydenkenney3313 5 лет назад

      This is a bit late of a comment but I believe you mean 5 amps at 100W. If it was 5 volts that mean it'd have to run at 20 amps to achieve 100W of power. That much current on a DC power cable would be unsafe. For that particular device I don't think a power bank could provide the power you need. Best of luck (though I'm sure it's too late now)

    Very interesting video. I want to buy a new laptop and I have a couple USB Type A power banks that I want to use to charge it with. I don't have a type C power bank. It just takes longer with a Type A power bank than with a Type C power bank. Now all I need is a Macbook pro 13 inch and a USB Type A to (micro) USB Type C cable. Thanks a lot.

      Just make sure the laptop can take a charge from your powerbank before you buy either one :-) Go USB-C PD PowerBank if you can as think it's a better solution. Best of luck!

    hi, I have the hp spectre 15 inch laptop and my charger just broke, does it affects the laptop if I use a lower voltage charger? ( hp spectre 15" uses a 90W ) and I can't find the original charger anywhere, so my only solution is to buy a lower voltage ( 45W or 60W) or a powerbank battery. which one do you recommend.
    If you know about any store that sells the 90w spectre original charger please let me know.
    PD: very useful video

      Hi Leonel, As long as it's a USB-C charger you should be able to use it! I mix and match USB-C chargers all the time. I sometimes charge my Macbook Pro 15, HP Spectre x360 and Google Pixel phone using the one charger, which is mostly my Pixel one (30w) and they charge it. Just depends on the power output really. My 30W charger will charge my MAcbook 3 times slower. All out the watts! USB-C charging is a standard, so you should be golden.

    • @braydenkenney3313

      Chromebooks are pretty low power. I used a Chromebook for school for a semester and I could even use my Qualcomm 3.0 car charger to top it off if I needed to. 19v isn't that specific though, you'd also need to tell us the amperage or wattage. Current fast charge standards for mobile phones are typically around 18w. That could be sufficient. If you have access to a USB C phone charger I'd honestly try that.

      Thanks man. This video was really helpful. I'm looking to get a new laptop and want to take it out in the bush car camping. Need an easy method for charging. 3.7 hours in reasonable. Could charge it while I'm asleep. Why do you think the Spectre is fickle with power banks. I was testing some power banks last night with my tablet and it also had issues. Aside from the macbook, do you know of any laptops that pair well with the battery banks?

    • @techable7524
      @techable7524  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Chris, You're very welcome.
      I've lost a lot of faith with the HP Spectre, there are a few things putting me off using this outside of the home. Battery seems to self discharge when completely off (around 10% per night) which is a huge issue for me. I'll be doing a video on it soon. I would not recommend the HP Spectre x360 to anyone at the moment.
      I'd love to test out more laptops with the powerbanks but they are hard to get my hands on to be honest. I'm a very small channel so no offers of a demo unit.
      I'm considering getting a 12" Macbook for travel or the 8th gen asus zenbook 3 deluxe but they are an expensive gamble without knowing for sure they are perfect for me. I know the Macbook works great but sometimes I need Windows for some things.

      I broke my Samsung Ativbook last night......
      The Spectre is officially off my list. I definitely want an 8th gen Intel. I wish there were more choices right now with those CPUs. I'm probably going to wait it out until Cyber Monday but I'm doing research now. I'm not into Apple. I got turned off back in the early 2000s. I don't like their customer service. I don't like MacOS. I don't like how controlling and restrictive their machines are. Repairs and parts are controlled. Also, don't like their prices. I'm a big fan of W10. I think it's the best version of Windows ever. I also like linux.
      I have a list of specs I need on a new machine but I haven't found anything that looks ideal yet. The Dell 13 XPS is on the list. I wish the Samsung had an 8th gen. Samsung is my favorite.
