    I’m a new sub. I am new to Etsy and a little overwhelmed. I have keywords everywhere and now know I have been adding my keywords in wrong. For example inspirational, women’s, t shirt, ... putting a coma after each keyword 😑 I did not know they should have been long tailed. I keyworded the long tail and saw zero searches. I will be watching your other videos. This is my first time after watching many videos hearing about marmalade. I also have to go back in and add keywords to my many beginning products I have added. Apologies for rambling. If you have any advice for me I would appreciate it. I opened my shop in December and have had no sales 🤦‍♀️ thank you 🙏

    • @KaraBuntin
      @KaraBuntin 3 года назад +2

      Keywords everywhere draws their info from google ads data, so it’s fine but it’s not Etsy-specific. Marmalead is better, but keywords everywhere is fine to use. I would go back and take the keywords you have already and just write sentences using them for your titles. What you described with the commas is actually okay for the search engine, because Etsy doesn’t “see” punctuation. But for ur customer reading it, go back and change it to “inspirational women’s tshirt” without the commas and it will look better.

      I just started like a month ago and have 7 sales. I noticed that when I make the title of the listing long it draws more people in. Like at first I was selling a vintage dress. I had it under "vintage stripe orange dress"....it had 2 views only. 2 weeks later I added "vintage dress, go go dress, fun psychedelic dress, scooter dress" and I got about 30 likes. It sold 1 week after I had updated the listing name. Please don't take my advice since I'm a beginner. But just sharing my experience.

    • @KaraBuntin
      @KaraBuntin 3 года назад +1

      There is no frequency capping, that's a tinfoil hat theory. There are, however, changes in the algorithm that will make things drop off the radar if the thing that was keeping it at the forefront is downgraded in the search algorithm. It's just the natural ebb and flow of ecommerce. I have a silicone mold that was selling like crazy for a few months, and it's totally slowed down in recent weeks. It happens.

    • @KaraBuntin
      @KaraBuntin 3 года назад

      By frequency capping, i assume you mean the mention of that in the seller handbook, but that refers to the number of times a single listing or ship will appear for a single search results for a single customer. I think you’re intending it to mean that they stop showing the listing after a certain number of times that it appears in search results, but that’s not what it means.

    • @kimberlyerin2122
      @kimberlyerin2122 3 года назад

      That's a very helpful response, thank you! My sales for a particular item have slowed substantially and I thought it was the frequency capping -- I interpreted it incorrectly, exactly the way you described here -- but it seems like it is indeed a shift in the algorithm. Thanks for taking the time to explain. I've been binge-watching your videos since finding you yesterday!

    • @KaraBuntin
      @KaraBuntin 3 года назад

      @@kimberlyerin2122 There's also a glitch going on o Etsy's end that they're supposedly working on, and you might be a victim of. People are saying that their best sellers have moved back to the page 17 area, where new listings used to go to wait for ranking factors to be applied. Etsy said that it was a glitch affecting UK sellers and that it's been fixed, but some sellers in other parts of the world said that they saw a change when the "fix" happened, and others said that it's made no difference. If you want to get some action on it, go to Twitter and tweet at Etsy about it, because publicity is what makes companies move fastest.

      If you're just opening your account, Etsy might close your shop by accident because they use bots to screen newer shops. As long as what you're listing isn't copyright infringement (no cartoon characters, movies or tv shows, trademarked logos etc.), and it's legal to sell on Etsy according to their Terms Of Service, you should be able to contact them and see if your shop was closed by mistake. It happens more often with new shops, from what I hear. Email at integrity@etsy.com or trust@Etsy.com (I can't remember which one it is) and see if you can get some answers.

    I have a few questions but I will just start with one (or two?) So in a hyper competitive market like jewelry, it is hard to find keywords, LT or not, with low competition. There are only so many ways of describing a pair of moonstone teardrop earrings. In order to avoid filling title and tags with words that do not apply to your product just b/c they have good engagement, you should opt for occasions like 30th birthday gift for women, for example? It seems so random. Maybe someone could buy them for a 32nd birthday...

      You can't, because Etsy is personalizing search now, and you can't see exactly where your listings are. The idea isn't to know 100% that you're in the top 1000, it's just to look for keywords and use long tail keyword strategy that will give you the best chance of being put in the top 1000. There's no formula that promises that you'll be included in the top listings, you have to do your own keyword research and make decisions about how to describe your listings accurately so that Etsy can figure out what they are and who they're for so that they're shown to the right people.

      @@ioannastekiapantou Yes, that's the best that you can do to tell Etsy what it is. It doesn't 100% guarantee that your listing will show up on page 1, but it's the best that you can do.

      It doesn't help as much as Etsy says, but customers like it and it does help in search placement a little. It won't help you tremendously.

    Really?? Etsy don’t use item descriptions to rank an item? I find that very hard to believe

      @@KaraBuntin how have you come to this conclusion? I’m curious as I’ve actually tested some of my listings with changes to the description... and I’ve seen results from that?
      Also any idea what’s happened to the search results in the last 48 hours? Many people have seen their results drop massively in he forums, and search results aren’t very accurate at all tbh many irrelevant items showing when searching 🤷🏻‍♂️

      @@jonjunior6995 It's not my conclusion, they've never used descriptions, if you look up the "how etsy search works" article in the help section it doesn't mention descriptions at all. The CTO did a tech conference presentation a while back and he said that descriptions were problematic because there are so many sellers with millions of different description formats, and it was too difficult to figure out how to read those.
      The search results have been changing in the last month or so because they're changing the algorithm to use more personalized search factors and browse instead of direct word matches. Don't rely on the forums for all of your information about traffic, though, because the people who are having slow sales will be the ones to answer those types of posts, and it creates a false image of slow sales across the board. My sales have been increasing to the point where I've been putting my shop into vacation mode when I go to bed so that I'm not swamped with overnight sales. It's not the same for everyone, but they are definitely changing the algorithm in substantial ways. I'm going to be talking about this in my Tuesday Live Etsy Chat next week.

      @@KaraBuntin thanks for your reply I appreciate that, I usually don’t take much notice of the forums, but I noticed something around 48 hours ago with my own listings and just the search in general throwing up quite poor results for queries... like items totally not related to the search term. As times gone on this is being noticed in different countries, whilst I appreciate some sellers may not be affected by this, and am aware people love to complain when their sales are down, this is probably the biggest overall change I’ve seen in 2 years and also one that makes no sense from what I’m seeing.

      @@jonjunior6995 It makes sense for what they're doing, because they're trying to show more things that aren't direct word matches to the search query and are semantic matches instead. As they start shifting toward that model it's going to be wonky for a while.
