Something I thought was a little different, and could be interesting, UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There was an application some years ago for the Great Western Main Line to be designated a World Heritage Site, but it's probably just as well it was rejected because otherwise they wouldn't have been able to electrify it as the overhead line equipment would've been considered insensitive development!
Well, it's gone now, yet Aleppo is still on the list - quite frankly, if a civil war isn't enough to be delisted but a vital redevelopment is then that says a lot about UNESCO's priorities!
@@Inkyminkyzizwoz I know right. It doesn't help that a UNESCO ambassador hasn't visited Liverpool for about a decade. They decided to strip away its status without seeing the positive progress of the new developments.
I’ve lost track of how many UNESCO World Heritage Sites we’ve visited, most not even mentioned here. Amazing how many there are. Thanks for putting it in perspective and explaining how it works. Great video.
There is inherent bias in selection of UNESCO sites thats the reason most of it is Europe and North America. Asian countries have lot of other historical and cultural sites that are much older and beautiful than some listed sites that don't even come close to these sites. The World Heritage Committee is based out of Paris, France. It has held 42 annual sessions till now, with a 43rd in 2019 . Of these, 3 have been held in Africa and Australia each, 4 in North America, 5 in South America, 6 in Asia, and 22 in Europe. In fact, Paris has hosted the annual committee meetings more time than any of the other continents (9). And this does have an impact on the selection in that year. In 1997, the France was the host of the extraordinary session. In that year, 46 new heritage sites were added to the list, of which 10 were in the host country of France. There are many things wrong with the way the committee is selected, the process by which nominated sites are shortlisted, the distribution of sites by region and culture, and so on. There are 4 times as many cultural sites than natural, which favors Europe as opposed to Asia since the Renaissance movement in the Middle ages is studied and discussed far more than it should be, while more ancient cultures like Egypt, India, China are usually glossed over . Both China and India alone hold more than many cultural sites but only few are listed unlike Europe. The Asia Pacific region is home to half the world’s population but only makes up 23% of the sites Whereas Europe with 10% of the world’s population claims to be home to more than 40% of the world’s cultural hotspots It’s the age-old question of “who watches the watchmen?”.
Altair To be fair, it isn’t as if China, the most historically cultured country in Asia, has made it easy. What with the whole Cultural Revolution and all.
You seem to forget one important detail, while indeed a site must fit one of the conditions set from the UNESCO to become a World Heritage, another important part is how determined is the host country to maintain and preserve it, thus, for example, despite Africa having probably a lot more potential Natural Sites than Europe, most countries can't or won't preserve them, so they just don't submit them.
Yeah, honestly there are plenty of places in America that would fit the bill to be world heritage sites. Europe just gets the most with the people deciding what becomes one being biased towards europe.
If i recall correctly, someone has to Nominate a site to be considered vy UNESCO (usually the government of said country) which then has to show will to actually be included on the list. So if we take Japan for example, there is no doupt about their beautiful medieval architecture but doe the Japanese government press on UNESCO to add them to the list? As someone who is from a smaller European country I remember the government pressing on UNESCO to add a site which was being considered for several years.
wow I can remember the discussion about building a bridge across the Elbe Valley in the media from when I was young. It was quite a big thing in Germany. Thank you so much, Wonder. This has been my favorite series since 2014. Possibly Cities could be a topic for a future episode? Awesome video, keep it up!
I visited the Forbidden City many, many years ago and was appalled by who much visitors were not prevented from touching things that were obviously being damaged by doing so. Also, the general lack of maintenance was shocking with small trees growing out of the roof tiles, etc. I hope that this is still not the case or its demise will be at the hands of its admirers and stewards.
Maybe you should do another part of Winners and Losers: countries, and add a category "most hated by outsiders", so my country gets mentioned at least.
yup, its not that the East doesn't have as many good sites, but because the west started it, they have disproportionately more of them. The only eastern country in the list of most sites was China, when it could be many more if they took more interest in it. Not to mention how African countries don't even get any good mention.
Don't say that Europe is "West". America is "West", Europe should be considered something different like "North", because they don't have much in common with the US, except for the language spoken on one european island. The same with White, Black, Asian,... such things don't exist in Europe. There are no "black" europeans, there are just europeans, who look different.
@@Justicsgenie culturally no. I'd say Western Europe is and North America are "western". I wouldn't consider Eastern and parts of southern Europe as the "West", think Greece, Poland, Romania, Czechia etc.
Your videos are excellent. You obviously put a lot of time and effort into these, and it shows. I have been binge watching your channel lately. Thanks for the great content.
Duh! Because Europe is one of the most culturally rich regions on earth and it is the region which protected its cultural heritage the best over many centuries. Asia, which also is very culturally rich, destroyed much of its heritage sites for progress. You will now only find single heritage sites in cities there, whereas in Europe entire cities are heritage sites. That's how well they are preserved.
Agreed. Honestly it's no wonder china is on top as that great wall saved them from what happened and is happening in the middle east, and some parts of Europe, which if wars ever stop and the issue of heritage sites becomes more relevant there, the area will rise to this list because of Mesopotamia and the heavy religious history. Also, Japan is 100s of islands in the ocean so that helped them a lot. which's why the definition is so strict in these countries; they can't add everything that's old as it will make the main things less appealing
@@madapigi1 Ivrea's ugly industrial complex is a UNESCO site, which is ridiculous while hundreds of truly historical temples, old towns, monasteries in China are not under UNESCO. UNESCO is biased

Tbf UNESCO sites do skew heavily European inherently, they're better preserved due to lack of colonization and somewhat better recorded and understood. That said China had it super rough the last 200 years, pillaged by the West then by Japan then by themselves, it's really a shame that they lost so much.
Not just because of that. China started applying for those sights a lot later than the Europeans so it’s only natural for them to have fewer sights on record

I would put Italy in the first place considering how big China is, it's just amazing that they have the same sites when you compare the size. If Italy was as big as China it would have an incredible number on heritage sites, it has to be the first
And China has a lot of natural sites, Italy too of course but it has more sites that were actually built by human beings and not by nature so you need to consider this
There is a cap on how many you could apply as an individual, so scaling makes zero sense, and that's one of the criticisms of UNESCO, in that it favours countries that are smaller and wealthier, that can afford to submit entries, and are overrepresented per capita/landmass.
@@v.f. It does, that's exactly why your scaling argument makes no sense. Even if Italy is the size/population of China, they still could only potentially submit as many annually. Besides, at the beginning mostly only rich nations could afford to submit, so poorer regions such as SEA and west Asia were at a severe disadvantage.
Amazing video. I liked how much footage was from Prague, where I live. Everybody here is super proud of our sites and we want to preserve them and share their beauty with the world.
Episode 5: Islands Biggest/smallest by area Most populated/largest uninhabited Most/least densely populated Countries with the most/fewest islands Highest nominal GDP/GDP per capita Largest/smallest coastline to area ratio Largest/most populous artificial islands
Greenland is the largest island. The smallest I suspect would be quite difficult as islands tend to come and go - indeed, it probably isn't even named! Indonesia has the most islands. The countries with the fewest would be any landlocked countries (although come to think of it, some might have islands in lakes)
EPISODE IDEA: Do a winners and losers for lakes, rivers, and seas. Episode 5, 6, and 7. Like size, amount of water and some more. Or you can do parks, forests. Maybe even a cities episode???
I was so sure this was going to be a video about candidates for World Heritage Site status which were rejected by UNESCO... (which would probably make a great video)
The Great Western Main Line was rejected - although it was probably just as well, because otherwise they wouldn't have been able to electrify it as the overhead line equipment would've been considered insensitive development!
I am Italian, and also enraged. Just in the Vatican City, how exactly is a finish factory a UNESCO world editate site, but the Sistine chapel, st.peter basilica, walls of the Vatican, Vatican museums (4th largest collection of art in the world) all not UNESCO sites? I am Roman, and the majority of our monuments are not UNESCO sites. This goes from the oldest walkable bridge existing (at least in Europe) to entire art collections (such as Borghese art gallery, Bernini’s and Caravaggio’s works) or the Piazza Navona’s Bernini’s church (his most spectacular work, which e spited an entire artchitectural style, the Baroque). I get that we can’t have 100 sites in one city, but at least make it fair no? This just in Rome btw.
They don't "run" the UN. To have a world heritage site somewhat bind you to protect it, so countries that have no intentions to protect their human or natural heritage sites, choose to not even submit them.
I think another interesting thing is the fact that frank lloyd wright has designed 8 world heritage sites after being included in the list in July 2019. Hollyhock House, California Taliesin West, Arizona Taliesin, Wisconsin Jacobs I, Wisconsin Unity Temple, Illinois Robie House, Illinois Fallingwater, Pennsylvania Guggenheim Museum, New York

West is known as Europe and USA, they are very similar, as over 70% of the people originally were from Europe
This whole thing seems incrediblly eurocentric
@@mimamo I wouldn't call two great wars with multiple bombings cultural protection but go off, I guess
Corporations would be a topic for a winners and losers video.
China and Japan would have more sites if they use the looser definition they used in Europe.
No
Italy can't be surpassed. It's far smaller than China but has the same number of Unesco sites.
@@madapigi1 Ivrea's ugly industrial complex is a UNESCO site, which is ridiculous while hundreds of truly historical temples, old towns, monasteries in China are not under UNESCO. UNESCO is biased

@@samohtt gotta replace old culture with new culture that's how humans progress.
Tbf UNESCO sites do skew heavily European inherently, they're better preserved due to lack of colonization and somewhat better recorded and understood. That said China had it super rough the last 200 years, pillaged by the West then by Japan then by themselves, it's really a shame that they lost so much.
Aussie Boy They got first place regardless...
@@devasishdutta3682 Italy has 50 or so possible new unesco sites plus weren't they 55 to 55?
Not just because of that. China started applying for those sights a lot later than the Europeans so it’s only natural for them to have fewer sights on record

WonderWhy is on this youtube grind this year
I would put Italy in the first place considering how big China is, it's just amazing that they have the same sites when you compare the size. If Italy was as big as China it would have an incredible number on heritage sites, it has to be the first
And China has a lot of natural sites, Italy too of course but it has more sites that were actually built by human beings and not by nature so you need to consider this
Because only a few world heritage applications can be submitted each year
sorry my English bad
There is a cap on how many you could apply as an individual, so scaling makes zero sense, and that's one of the criticisms of UNESCO, in that it favours countries that are smaller and wealthier, that can afford to submit entries, and are overrepresented per capita/landmass.
@@LibeliumDragonfly And this limit doesn't apply to Italy too?

FINALLY! I have been waiting for this

Episode 6: Country Leaders (From Kings to Dictators)
Oh hello
You mention that the U.S. and europe 'win' in the most sites, but you also have to consider that they fund and run the U.N., so that's likely why.
They don't "run" the UN. To have a world heritage site somewhat bind you to protect it, so countries that have no intentions to protect their human or natural heritage sites, choose to not even submit them.
Lol they just have a massive culture compared to the other countries
I think another interesting thing is the fact that frank lloyd wright has designed 8 world heritage sites after being included in the list in July 2019.

Taliesin West, Arizona
Taliesin, Wisconsin
Jacobs I, Wisconsin
Unity Temple, Illinois
