  • What has made Nicolas Poussin so influential over artists through the decades? And how did his style adapt over his career? Often referred to as the ‘painter’s painter’, this 17th-century artist is well represented for you to explore at the National Gallery in London.
However, we were missing a key aspect of his oeuvre: his famous 'Seven Sacraments'. In celebration of our Bicentenary this year, in 2024, we acquired 'Eucharist' from this series. It is one of the greatest paintings of the Last Supper.
Join National Gallery curator Francesca Whitlum-Cooper and Head of Conservation, Larry Keith, in the conservation studio, to see this newly acquired, later work alongside an earlier Poussin, 'Cephalus and Aurora'.

Really interesting discussion on probably the greatest French painter of the seventeenth century, the bravura of baroque taste being tempered in his hand by a certain Gallic refinement. One can see in Poussin's work the seed of the neoclassical painting that would long dominate French taste beginning in the late eighteenth century. It's remarkable, given his fame, that Poussin apparently never produced any portraits, other than his own self-portrait made late in his life.
