It's not that old. It was built in 1982. It's a dual-propulsion (sail and diesel engine) three-mast bark (in the family of the corvettes), purposed as a school ship for the Mexican Navy Academy. Its old-school construction, that you deem belonging to a museum ha ha, obeys in that, just as in many other navies around the world, cadets are still taught the arts and crafts of sailing.
Yep on the tug boats part. Or, did you miss that part? No, the ship wasn't sailing under it's own power but was being guided thru the channel by a tugboat to ensure this very thing didn't happen. However apparently something went wrong. Perhaps the tugs engines died or something and then the ship got caught in the river's current. No, fun fact, sailing vessels have super small engines. The entire reason the crew asked for a tug is bc they knew they didn't know exactly where to go that was safe.
The ship lost engine power as it was departing pier 17 and the current pushed it backwards into the bridge. The bridge wasn't damaged but there were at least two fatalities on the ship. Very sad.
The Brooklyn Bridge was built to withstand just about anything. It was over-engineered to an extreme. It was built during a time when America had unprecedented pride in her work, where quality mattered above all else.
How is it possible that you can have this level of incompetence. I believe that ship over a century ago went on an incredible journey around the world.
Let's note that the ship was moving in reverse. It's possible he lost power to his engine and was drifting Northeast in the tide. It seems the vessel was NUC (Not Under Command--meaning it was unable to maneuver).
That seems right. The tides in the East River are very strong. It's not really a river at all but a funnel through which the whole of Long Island Sound flows with he turning of the tide.
Yep there will be plenty of memes but my guess is not a single will include the real culprit, the tugboats failure to do it's job. No, the ship wasn't under it's own steam. They paid a tug to help them navigate the channel.

@@leonm3956do you live in the states?
@@pablopeter3564 yeah that was an American tugboat that ended up killing 2 Mexican naval soldiers. This wasn't a Mexican navy caused accident
Can't drive their ships any better than they drive their cars.
Maybe they were drunk?
sadly you didnt watch the video or are too ignorant to comprehend the explanation
You don’t “drive” ships. You sail, you steer, or you sail it. You’re just as stupid as they are 😢😢😢😢😢

That BOAT said STOP DEPORTING MY PEOPLE.
I hope the first responders are able to bring everyone to safety. It's been one helluva day here in the USA.
On another note, Jack would be an incredibly good news journalist.
Thank you!

Those migrants put alot of new Yorkers in danger they should impound that boat arrest them and have Mexico pay for all the damages." It's not a joking matter how about if trump annexed Mexico
Have you already received the attention you were looking for?
They didn't understand all the warning signs because they were in English
It's like Jack trained his whole life for this audition. He even used poetic language, enthusiastic descriptions, and specific details. Chef's kiss! Someone give him a free Journalism scholarship. Even the anchor asked for Jack to provide further details, lmao! :)
At least your bridge didn't collapse... Unlike ours...
That was a huge tanker in Baltimore. This a wooden ship. That bridge was gonna fold that boat easy lol
Idiocy in both instances....for some reason after the pandemic everyone lost their damn minds and don't know how to drive without causing accidents...or sail apparently as well....
