@74SD455TA This IS an authentic '74 Trans Am SD. You couldn't ordered an SD 4-speed with air conditioning, the 4-speed in this SD455 was dealer installed before the car was delivered. Love these cars. The fuel pump was going out in the video and since replaced. This car has less than 20,000 original miles, is one of the most original in the country and was recently sold. I'm glad to hear you DRIVE your car as these cars were intended. The last TRUE musclecar! Thanks for watching!
I owned a 74, Y-code 455 Formula. Loved that car. This video takes me back. SDs are pretty sweet. As cool as these cars were, check out that 70s build quality, or lack there of. GM didn't even try to fit the bumpers to the car. The paint on the endura product never matched that of the body. We designed some really cool cars back in the day, but the quality was sub-par!
If you want to see a 74 SD 4 speed coming at you at full throttle with perfect sound recording and good driving, check out History Channel's "Modern Marvels 70s Tech" episode. SD owners will recognize that hair raising scream.
That roll on was lame!!! Drive the car ! I dont care if its a rare car. It will not hurt it I promise. I have a rare car also and have no problem getting on it every once in a while. SD's are sweet cars !
Oh and the icing of the evaporator was the explaination for any of the high performance rides with a 4-spd and that's because stick shift cars get lower gears... so the engine is spinning faster aswell as the compressor. I have only seen in person (at the Trans Am nats in Dayton which I live 10 min from and have attended for many years) a 71 formula 4spd w a/c and another 73 TA 4spd like mine. The 068 cam they ended up with has no idle quality issues anyway. It's an idle to 5K low lift. Good cam
The muscle car era was over in 1970.The Super Duty is argueably the strongest Pontiac engine ever built even with low compression. These engines would compete with hemi's and LS6's all day long.Poor cam profile is correct.EPA mandated that Pontiac change from the Ram Air IV style they originally wanted to use.Easily corrected.Mine now has a Nunzi Ram Air IV style cam as Pontiac engineers envisioned. As I have said, mine runs low 12's at appx 115MPH. If supercharged the SD would have 700+ HP.
Mine isn't a SD but my 73 4-spd has factory ac and had it for 18 years and known about for 8 or more years before that. It has a 3.42 rear and ac. It's easy to tell if the firewall has been modified aswell as the trans tunnel.
The explaination I have always heard wasn't about throwing belts off it was because of freezing up the evaporator core. Just like in a house when it's overcharged. The automatic would auctualy idle at lower rpm in gear than a 4spd in nutral. That is a good compairison since we are talking about idling and the auto would obviously idle slower. Oh and I've never heard anything but good about oldschool GM compressors. In auto-tech they told us that they had the capacity to cool a house.

Its babied and cared for to this day I'm sure. Wish we could have done a better road test, been in storage awhile, taking it east. Thanks for checking out this Super Duty T/A and following Samspace81, W
Some 1973-74 SD did come with a/c. Feb 25, 2012, I when with a group to see the Steve Ames collection in NH. He has dealt with high performance Pontiacs since the 1970's. He's got four SDs, the red 74 has a/c (I noticed the GM A-6 compressor), and the white 73 SD had EVERY OPTION - a/c and cruise control to boot!
I know of another "Numbers Matching" all original 1974 SD455 4 gear T/A which DOES have a/c. The car was not "put together" it came that way from Poncho, I was there when she bought it in '75. COPO can be anything, even dealer installed, although I do agree that the SD being the pinnacle 455 offering, should have based w/o a/c and radio, too bad they didn't make it a "lightweight". A/C or not, it was a mover and could fry 'em almost at will.
EH SONNY? Thanks for watching the Samspace81 classic car video channel & sub if you haven't. I know if you've been naughty or nice. Thanks for watching Brad!
I feel the same way about automatic cars that you do A/C cars. I'd rather have A/C than an automatic, but I'd really prefer to have neither one in a muscle car.
Most 73/74 SD's came with A/C. Pontiac did not put A/C in 4 speed cars because of potential idle problems. The only way to get A/C was to have a dealer install it (Why anybody would do that I'll never know). A/C did nothing but sacrifice performance and A/C cars got a piggy 3.08 rear end where non-A/C cars got a 3.42. My SD VIN#129978, no A/C is the only 1of1 in the SD registry known to exist in the world that is Cameo white with white standard interior and a turbo 400. Runs low12's at115mph.
These cars were what we were used to. By 1980 they were literally everywhere and most ran like crap so they disappeared pretty fast. Nice to see one still huffing along....
Love the car and the video. But, I never loved that color combination. Totally subjective though. I am sure some people really, really love this color :)
That is NOT an SD. SD's with a 4 speed did NOT come with air conditioning and this vehicle has air conditioning. So, unless the original transmission was swapped out to a 4-speed this is a fake. There is nothing in the video to support authenticity. Also, VERY POOR job shifting to get a meeger tire scratch. I have a 74 SD that will tear the hides off at will from a 20 mph roll and mine is a turbo 400, no air and its a monster. Runs 12's.
if it is a real SD-455, they do not make that engine block anymore. thus you might not want to dog out the car when you are driving it. the original engine block in the car is the most important thing in the whole car.
Yes it was real and very expensive. It wasn't driven hard for that reason, sitting up, careful owner. I was happy to have any video on it. Thanks for chiming in.
@@samspace81 I tried to say that to someone else in this comment thread, pretty sure engine parts for this car would be damn near impossible to find if they could at all.
That engine sounds like it has some seriously fouled spark plugs and the smoke from the exhaust doesn't look healthy. I hope the car got the maintenance it was lacking.
sorry there brother =a correct driving style is important -- thank you for the video of that car being miss treated by a poor driver - but wow what a car - i am a factory worker and make roller rockers and super chargers my boss has 3 pontiacs -67 gto 68 firebird and 69 firebird all in australia.
Any Pontiac non SD car could have been built with A/C. That goes for automatics and 4 speeds. SD's were race engines and Pontiac did not put A/C in the 4 speed cars because of potential idle problems especially with a cold engine and they were concerned that over revving would throw off the A/C belts because the compressor's were poor to begin with.. Furthermore, a non SD car with or without A/C could get a 3.42 rear end. Only the SD's with A/C had a mandatory 3.08 rear end.
This was not the most exciting test drive I've filmed. The car had been sitting up and wasn't running the best, wasn't up for a hard drive either to be honest. Thanks for watching Samspace81.
I don't believe you. Prove it with a build sheet and a VIN #. I am very knowledgeable about SD's. Pontiac did not put A/C in on the production line with a 4 speed car. They were lucky to build these cars at all given the EPA and GM brass at the time. I hate A/C especially on SD cars. When I purchased mine, it was very important to me not to have an A/C car. SD's RULE!

@@samspace81 I tried to say that to someone else in this comment thread, pretty sure engine parts for this car would be damn near impossible to find if they could at all.
Agree
That engine sounds like it has some seriously fouled spark plugs and the smoke from the exhaust doesn't look healthy. I hope the car got the maintenance it was lacking.
Yes it had been sitting up, we took it easy on it. High dollar customer consignment car
we all saw you riding the fuck out of the clutch so no wonder you got clutch shudder!
+Ronnie Boucher (the crystal craftsman) haha I wasn't driving, yeah I hear you.
sorry there brother =a correct driving style is important -- thank you for the video of that car being miss treated by a poor driver - but wow what a car - i am a factory worker and make roller rockers and super chargers my boss has 3 pontiacs -67 gto 68 firebird and 69 firebird all in australia.
+Ronnie Boucher (the crystal craftsman) Sounds like a badass job! I bet you take pride in your work.
Cool car but can you drive it any slower
😆 it had been in storage a long time he was taking it easy on it. Customer car very rare one too
Hmm, interesting, that car has a 4 speed with A/C. . .Wasn't offered on the SD455 with a 4 speed! Only auto's could be optioned with A/C
It was added A/C, thanks for watching & your knowledge Arthur
What the hell did I just watch?
Road test on a car that was in storage for months and months, it's not a movie
That guy would shit if I took him for a ride in my bolt ons 97 z28! Lol
Might wake him up, wasn't the most exciting video I've done thats for sure.
Only the SD's with A/C had a mandatory 3.08 rear end.
why start in second? Did he know he was in 2cnd ?
Probably not
Nice but that guy had zero idea how to drive it
This was not the most exciting test drive I've filmed.
SD's RULE!
So, where's the fun part?
Sorry Chris I've let you down
the car is a real dog. It's not an SD455 either. obviously...
Drive that thing !
Thanks Justin for watching
Give me the keys. I'll show you fun.

Needs a tune up and a driver. Didn't look like much fun to me.
Yes it was running poorly, few point that out or are smart enough to know
